Best pool cleaner UK: which type to buy first

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are choosing a first cleaner for an above-ground pool or a spa, and the amazon.co.uk shelf mixes a hose jet, a short stick and a floor robot as if they were one tool. This guide is the decision order: type, then reach, then the bag, then power. It does not crown a winner. Named picks are on the [best cordless pool vacuum](/hub/pool-care/pool-cleaner/sub/pool-cleaner-best) page, and the nine rows live on the [pool cleaner comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-cleaner). Prices and limits below are those amazon.co.uk listings, not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three cleaners, three jobs

A cordless stick is a vacuum you aim. The PoolyPoly 1814 and 1822 extend to about 165 cm and are sold as not for big pools. The 1818 handle runs from 66 to 141 cm. Hydro Haus HHRSV is a spa vacuum at 105–164 cm. Both VIVOHOME VH1715 colours list 90–278 cm, and you still walk the head. A robot drives itself only on a flat floor. POOLPURE states up to 90 m² and excludes slopes and heavy wrinkles. The FAMINESS at about £25.99 is a garden-hose jet, with a pole to 4.4 feet and a UK line of 2.4 from 40. Steps or a sagging liner already rule the robot out.

Reach and the pool you actually have

Measure the far floor from the side you can stand on. A 165 cm stick cleans a hot tub under your feet and misses the middle of a wide pool. Hydro Haus stops at 164 cm. The 1818 handle stops at 141 cm, and the 79.5 cm body is for shallow water with the handle off. The VIVOHOME pole, 90–278 cm, is the family-pool reach here, and the head has to stay immersed. Robots have no pole. The claim is 90 m² of flat floor, and a sloping floor can still be the wrong shape. Spa depth, including the 30 cm line, is on the cordless hot tub vacuum page.

What the bag has to catch

Leaves and sand are not the same filter. VIVOHOME includes three 180-mesh bags and one 300-mesh bag. UK reviews on the shared file use the finer bag for sand and silt. The coarse bag alone lets fine debris back. The 1818 lists a 1.5 litre basket plus a second filter. UK reviews say the clean is strong with the sleeve on the gauze, and that fine dirt falls back without it. Hydro Haus names a 200 micron cup on only 10 reviews. The 1814, the 1822 and both POOLPURE listings do not state a micron. Salt water is written only on VIVOHOME: not suitable. A blank field is not a yes.

Battery, plug and hose

Do not rank the VIVOHOME colours on milliamp-hours. Both claim about 60 minutes, 18 V and five cells. Blue says 2000 mAh and yellow says 20000 mAh, so the larger number is not a longer run. The 1818 says about 60 minutes. The short sticks say about 1.5 hours. POOLPURE says 100 minutes. Regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 expects a BS 1363 plug, or a non-UK plug only with a conversion plug and a BS 1362 fuse. None of the nine files states the plug. WaterSafe says not to leave a hosepipe submerged. FAMINESS only runs while that hose is on. Altering the outdoor tap is a plumber's job.

What this guide will not rank

Stars are not a winner. Both VIVOHOME colours show 4.3 from 893 and matching review text, so count them once. The 1814 and 1822 share UK comments too. IPX8 on the POOLPURE pages states neither depth nor time. The flat-floor condition is on the robot or handheld page. Shelf prices move.

Common questions

Is a robot the right cleaner for a Bestway or Intex pool?
Only if the floor is flat, inside 90 m², and free of heavy wrinkles. POOLPURE excludes slopes. Steps or a sagging liner make it a pole job. These listings do not claim the robot climbs walls.
How long a pole do you need?
Long enough to put the head on the far floor from the side. Here that is 90–278 cm on the VIVOHOME, about 165 cm on the short PoolyPoly sticks, 105–164 cm on the Hydro Haus, and 4.4 feet on the FAMINESS. A stick sold as not for big pools does not grow if you lean further over.
What filter actually keeps sand?
The VIVOHOME 300-mesh bag, which UK reviews name for sand and silt. The 1818 needs its extra sleeve or fine dirt falls back. Hydro Haus states 200 micron, on 10 reviews. A listing that only says filter has not given you a mesh.
Does the charger need a UK plug?
The files do not say. Regulation 35 expects a BS 1363 plug, or a conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse. Look at the pins. A two-pin charger is not ready for a UK socket on its own.
When is a hose vacuum a bad idea?
When debris has to stay in a bag, or the hose would sit in the pool. FAMINESS is 2.4 from 40, with adapter, snap and stirred-dirt comments. WaterSafe says not to leave a hosepipe submerged, because of backflow.
What does IPX8 add if no depth is stated?
Nothing you can quote as a depth. POOLPURE prints IPX8 and states neither depth nor time. Count the two VIVOHOME colours once as well: both show 4.3 from 893, and yellow's 20000 mAh clashes with the blue file's 2000 mAh for the same 60-minute claim.
