How to set up an Intex filter pump

Updated: 21.10.2026

The pool is full, the hoses are still coiled on the grass, and the pump hums without the water moving. This is how to set up an Intex filter pump so the hoses point the right way, the air leaves the housing before the motor runs dry, and a sand valve is not turned while the pump is running. Peter F. followed Intex Support’s hose note, a 220–240 V C1000 setup sheet, and the SF90220-2 sand manual, then checked them against the review notes in our [Intex filter pump comparison](/hub/pool-care/intex-filter-pump). Where the pump sits and which hose is which

Intex Support says the pump sits below the waterline. Extra hose length cuts performance. Set the housing on flat ground where the hoses reach without a kink, and where a leak drips on the path rather than into the socket. The lower outlet on the pool goes to the upper port marked “+”. The return hose goes from the lower pump port back to the upper fitting on the pool wall. If you connect them backwards, the pump strains and the jet stays idle. Push each hose on until it seats, then fit the clamp. A review of the small UK-plug C530 says the pipes slide off and the pump stops after about ten minutes. If the diameters differ, match 32 mm or 38 mm in the buying guide before you force a collar.

Bleed air before the motor runs dry

The 220–240 V C1000 sheet says leave the air-release valve open until water flows, or the motor runs dry. Open the valve, let a solid stream appear, then close it and only then leave the motor running. If your manual shows a different sequence, follow that manual. You want water returning to the pool, a housing that stays cool, and no burning smell. Chemicals do not go into the pump. The SF90220-2 manual says children stay away from the cord, and that the appliance is for ages from 8 only with supervision. It also says to use a 30 mA RCD and not to use a portable RCD, an extension lead, a plug-in timer, an adaptor or a converter plug. A timer on the pump is not a timer cube in an extension reel. Read the UK plug page before the first switch-on if you were about to add one. A 120 V plug is a return, not a setup step.

How long to leave it on

PoolPro’s rough guide for an above-ground pool is about four hours. Intex Support recommends 6–8 hours. Do not average those into a seven-hour rule. The SF90220-2 manual lists operating time by pool size for that pump, so use that table if you own that model. Set the hours only after the plug is right. If the water is still cloudy the next morning, the cause may be an undersized pump or a choked cartridge. Rinsing versus backwashing is the cartridge or sand choice. Do not run the pump dry while you drain the last of the pool.

Sand valve and the point where you stop

A cartridge pump has no multiport. You rinse or replace the element with the pump off. A sand valve includes filter, backwash, recirculate and drain. Leave it on filter for ordinary running. Backwash sends pool water out of a waste hose. Point that hose at a drain that is allowed to take pool water, then top the pool up. The SF90220-2 manual says waste-water disposal follows local rules. Switch the pump off before you move the valve. Turning a multiport under pressure is how lids crack and sand returns to the pool. If you smell burning, see smoke, or the supply trips, unplug and use the retailer. A scorched plug, or a socket you cannot confirm is on a 30 mA RCD, is an electrician. If the label says 120 V, stop.

Common questions

Which hose goes to the port marked plus?
The lower outlet on the pool wall goes to the upper pump port marked “+”. The return to the pool leaves from the lower pump port. Intex Support also says the pump sits below the waterline, and that extra hose length reduces performance. If the jet is dead after a careful connection, bleed the air before you reverse the hoses a second time.
When do I close the air-release valve?
On the 220–240 V C1000 sheet, you leave it open until a solid stream of water flows, then you close it. Closing it first is how that motor runs dry. If the diagram in your box shows another order, follow that diagram for your model. Watch the first minute. You want water back in the pool and a housing that is not hot.
How many hours a day should it run?
There is no single hour on this page. PoolPro suggests about four hours as a rough guide. Intex Support says 6–8 hours. The SF90220-2 sand manual uses a table by pool size for that model. Pick the source that belongs to your pump, and do not average them. A longer run will not fix a 120 V plug or a choked cartridge.
How do I backwash without dumping water into the flower bed?
Switch the pump off, move the valve to backwash, and send the waste hose to a drain that may take pool water. Local rules decide that drain, which is what the sand manual points to. Switch off again before you move the valve back to filter, then top the pool up. Do not turn the valve while the motor is running.
When do I stop and call someone?
Stop if you smell burning, see smoke, or the supply trips, and contact the retailer rather than opening the housing. Call an electrician if the plug is scorched, if you need a new outdoor circuit, or if you cannot tell whether the socket has a 30 mA RCD. A label that says 120 V means you stop. Do not treat that as a setup fault you can tape or adapt.
