Filter balls vs sand for a domestic sand tank

Updated: 21 October 2026

Filter balls vs sand is a choice between a graded granular bed and a loose fibre bed in the same tank, and only when that tank is allowed to run on balls. Balls win on weight. They lose on a single agreed way to clean them, and they are not the medium UK public-pool guidance names. The [filter balls comparison](/hub/pool-care/filter-balls) is the seven amazon.co.uk bags, from about £3.99 to about £13.99. This page is the fork before any of those bags. What you are actually comparing

Sand here is graded silica, the 16/30 media PWTAG names, not builder’s sand. SPATA rejects builder’s sand. If you stay on sand, it is pool-grade sand or the glass the manual allows. Filter balls are loose polyester or polyethylene fibre spheres. A few hundred grams replaces a 10–25 kg bag on a seasonal pool. They are not a cartridge. Intex says its fibre balls are not a cartridge replacement. Filter glass stays a bed of grains. Choosing glass is not choosing balls.

Weight and cleaning are the real split

Weight is why seasonal owners look at balls. Bestway’s rule is 28 g per 1 kg of sand, so 25 kg of sand is 700 g of balls. You still empty the old sand. Do not leave a layer in the bottom. Cleaning is where the swap gets less convenient. Sand is built around backwash. Intex allows backwash, a tap rinse, or a machine, and prefers the machine. Bestway says hand-rinse, and backwash is not applicable. Steinbach says hand wash and not tumble dry. The steps are on how to wash filter balls. If you will rinse a mesh bag, balls match that chore. If you want the multiport routine, sand matches it. Pooltime’s default is not to mix the two. None of the seven listings describes a mixed bed.

What UK pool guidance names

For a club, a school, or a pool with paying guests, the medium is not a domestic listing’s choice. HSE points pool operators to PWTAG. PWTAG technical note 50 names 16/30 silica to BS EN 12904, and glass. Balls are not that specification. BS EN 16713-1:2016 covers domestic pool filtration, including alternatives to sand, and it excludes public pools. A bullet is not a declaration that the bag meets that standard. If the tank or the RCD will not hold, that is a professional repair.

When to stay and when to switch

Stay with pool-grade sand, or with glass if the manual allows glass, when the vessel says sand only, when guests pay to swim, or when you will not follow a wash rule that is not backwash. Builder’s sand is the wrong stay. Switch to balls only when the pump maker or the ball brand allows that tank, the sand’s weight is the problem, and you will follow that brand’s wash rule. How many grams is the filter balls buying guide. Do not switch because the water is green. Green water is chemistry.

Common questions

Are filter balls better than sand?
They are lighter, and that is the advantage for a seasonal tank you empty by hand. They are not a finer filter by any measurement in this comparison, and they are not the medium PWTAG names for public pools. Better means easier to carry and acceptable to your pump maker. It does not mean cleaner water by itself.
Will I still backwash?
On sand, yes, that is the normal clean. On balls, only if that brand allows it. Intex allows backwash and still prefers a machine or a rinse. Bestway’s Polysphere listing treats backwash as not applicable. Steinbach says not suitable for backwashing. A multiport with a backwash position does not override the ball maker.
Can I use builder’s sand if balls are awkward?
No. SPATA rejects builder’s sand for pool filters, and the same warning sits in Bestway-style manuals. If balls are the wrong fit, the fallback is pool-grade sand or filter glass where the manual allows glass, not sharp sand from a general building bag.
Is filter glass the same kind of switch?
No. Glass is still a granular bed. PWTAG names it alongside 16/30 silica. It stays heavy, and it stays inside the sand-filter routine. Balls are a fibre fill with a different wash rule. Choosing glass does not answer the ball question, and choosing balls does not answer the glass question.
Do balls remove the need for chlorine?
No. Neither do sand filters. SPATA treats filtration and chemical treatment as separate. You still need a clear view of the bottom and a dosing routine. Balls are not a chlorinator. Cloudy green water is not evidence that the medium has failed.
Will a public or club pool accept balls because a domestic listing says so?
No. PWTAG TN50 names sand and glass for the pools it covers. HSE points operators to PWTAG. A domestic amazon.co.uk bullet, and a domestic high-rate pump, do not move a club, school, or guest pool onto fibre balls.
Can I mix sand and balls?
Not as a default. Pooltime says only if a maker describes that setup. None of the seven listings in this comparison describes a mixed bed. Empty the sand, then fill with the gram weight your pump or your ball brand printed.
