How to use a cordless pool robot

Updated: 21 October 2026

The first cycle often fails for a dull reason: a damp charge port, someone still in the water, a wrinkled liner, or a robot that stops in the middle. This is how to use a cordless pool robot in a UK garden pool, from the charger to winter storage. It is the routine, not a ranking. The models sit on the [cordless pool robot comparison](/hub/pool-care/cordless-pool-robot). Distances below are Maytronics and Bestway manuals, not a statute, plus the IET note on 30 mA RCDs. Charge it before it goes near the water

Charge indoors, or well back from the pool, with the port dry and the original charger. Maytronics, on the Liberty, says use that charger, not an extension lead, on a 30 mA RCD, at least 3.5 m from the edge and 11 cm off the ground, between 6°C and 35°C. Zodiac’s corded manual uses about 4 m. An IP line describes the machine in the water, not the charger, and not a cracked case. These files do not state a BS 1363 plug. POOLPURE rows claim about 2.5 to 3 hours to charge. The U8 claims 4.5 hours.

Put it in only when the pool is empty

Nobody swims while the robot is in the water. Maytronics says remove it before anyone enters. Zodiac’s manual says the same. Take ladders, toys and hoses out of the path. A flat-only POOLPURE on a slope or a heavily wrinkled liner is the wrong tool. Which sentence has to match is the cordless pool robot buying guide. Bestway’s manual says its robot stops if the liner is wrinkled. Set the robot on the floor. Floor robots are about 3.6 to 3.8 kg dry. The U8 is 12 kg dry. Press start, and leave the water.

What a useful cycle looks like, and what a failed one looks like

A useful cycle ends where you can reach it. Several POOLPURE listings park near 5% battery, with a floating handle. The 8° listing and the U8 include a hook. UK reviews in this set also describe a POOLPURE that stops after about 20 seconds, another that stops after half a minute with the battery still showing full, a wheel off on first use, and a robot that drives so fast it throws silt up. If it dies in the middle, use the hook from the deck. Do not swim out to it. If you are still choosing a listing, use the best cordless pool robot page. Do not open the housing.

Rinse, dry and store

Lift it out, let it drain, and rinse the basket before the dirt dries. Maytronics tells Liberty owners to rinse before debris hardens. Dry the charge port before the next charge, and store the robot cool and dry. The 8° POOLPURE listing says recharge at least every three months and do not leave the pack empty. Stop if the case is cracked, swollen or hot. These ASINs are not the Zodiac batches recalled on 6 March 2025.

Common questions

Can people stay in the pool while it runs?
No. Maytronics says remove the robot before anyone enters, and Zodiac’s manual says never swim while the cleaner is in. That applies to cordless and corded machines. Wait until you have lifted it out with the handle or the hook. A stopped robot in the middle is a retrieval job from the deck, not a reason to swim to it.
How far from the water should the charger be?
Maytronics specifies at least 3.5 m from the edge and 11 cm off the ground, on the original charger, with no extension lead, and a 30 mA RCD on the socket. Zodiac prints about 4 m for a power supply. Those are manufacturer instructions, not a UK law that quotes 3.5 m. The IET point is the 30 mA RCD on the socket. Do not run the lead along the coping.
What if it stops in the middle?
Reach it with the hook or a pole from the side. Do not dive. A stop after 20 to 30 seconds, with the battery still showing full, matches UK reviews of POOLPURE units in this set and is a fault, not a finished cycle. A park near the wall at a low battery is the behaviour the floating-handle listings describe. If the case is hot or the wheel has come off, stop using it.
How do you empty the basket?
Lift the robot out, let it drain, and rinse the basket before the leaves dry. Maytronics warns that debris sets hard if you wait. Tip the waste into a bucket. A 6 litre basket, on the U8, holds more than the unspecified bins on the budget listings, and it is also heavier when it is full. Refit the basket before the next run so the robot is not pumping straight through.
Why is the pool cloudier after a pass?
UK reviews of the RPC-100A say it can drive too fast and throw debris up instead of keeping it in the robot. The cloud is silt, not a deeper clean. Let it settle and run the pool filter. A finer cartridge, where the listing has one, can also shorten a cycle. Cloudiness plus a 20-second cut-out is a fault to stop on, not a setting to repeat all afternoon.
Can you charge it with a wet port or an extension lead?
No. Dry the port first, and use the original charger. Maytronics and Bestway both reject a casual lead for this job. An extension lead to the pool edge is the mistake the manuals are written to stop. If the charger plug does not match a UK socket, do not force an adaptor into a damp area. Charge between the temperatures the manual allows, where it states them.
