Combination pliers buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are filling a first UK toolbox from amazon.co.uk, and every title promises a cutter, a grip, and sometimes a voltage. A combination pliers buying guide is the order of that decision: pick a length that matches the job, then read the cutter line that is actually printed, then decide whether you are paying for a comfort coat or a marked handle. Stars come last. This page does not name a winner. The [combination pliers comparison](/hub/pliers/combination-pliers) holds the table. The editorial team compared these eleven listings on 19 October 2026 and did not run a lab cut.

Start with length

Length is leverage, not a style badge. The shortest usable rows here are Amtech at 150 mm and £5.62, and Sharp-tec at 160 mm and £9.99. They twist garden wire. They do not match a 180 mm squeeze on 2.5 mm copper. The household default is 180 mm: both KNIPEX rows and Bosch. A 200 mm WORKPRO pair adds mass for a rusted screw and weighs more in a pouch. DOWELL’s inch titles, and Blue Spot’s Mini with a 10 × 10 mm catalogue line, are kit-bag tools, not a stated 180 mm head.

Only use a cutter figure that is printed

A hardness number is not a wire diameter. Bosch prints 60 HRC. Both KNIPEX 180 mm rows say about 60 HRC. None of those files print a millimetre figure. Do not copy 2.2 mm from a Knipex sheet onto Bosch. The only printed cutter diameter here is 2.3 mm steel wire on the WORKPRO W031424A at £12.99. That line does not travel to the 5-in-1 sibling. If the listing is silent, the cutter is unproven for hard wire. Milwaukee at £19.99 has a UK note of a clean cut on 2.5 mm copper and one snap on earth-bonding cable. Buy it as a multi-function pair, not as a rated cutter.

Handle comfort is not insulation

A coloured grip is a comfort coat until the listing prints a voltage mark. Only the KNIPEX 03 06 180 states VDE and 1000 V. The sibling 03 01 180 cites DIN ISO 5746, a size standard, not a live-work rating. Bosch soft-grip and WORKPRO TPR are comfort, and the extractor listing notes handles unsuitable for live wires. Read insulated combination pliers before you pay for a mark. That page owns BS EN IEC 60900:2018 and regulation 14. A CE line is not a substitute. Titles that say lineman and combination are a photo check on the combination pliers vs linesman page.

What the pounds are buying

On 19 October 2026, entry is about £4 to £8: Blue Spot, Amtech, and both DOWELL rows. That is a spare, not a printed hard-wire diameter or a voltage mark. Mid-band is about £11 to £14, including the plastic-coated KNIPEX at 4.7 from 2,421. Premium here is Milwaukee at £19.99 and the insulated KNIPEX at £25.50. Extra pounds buy a brand, extra functions, or the only VDE line. They do not make live work legal. Milwaukee’s aluminium, 90 g, and 50 × 50 cm lines are not used as specs. If the jaws do not meet, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the route. Who should skip each row is on the best combination pliers page.

Common questions

What length should I buy first?
Buy 180 mm for a household drawer unless you already know the pair will live in a puncture kit or a belt pouch. In this set that band is the two KNIPEX 180 mm rows and the Bosch pair. A 150–160 mm pair, Amtech or Sharp-tec, is a compact spare. A 200 mm WORKPRO pair adds leverage and mass. Mini and 6 in titles are kit-bag tools, not a substitute for a stated 180 mm head.
Does a 60 HRC line mean it cuts 2.2 mm hard wire?
No. 60 HRC is a hardness claim on Bosch and both KNIPEX 180 mm listings. None of those captured files print 2.2 mm. The only millimetre figure in this set is 2.3 mm steel wire on the WORKPRO extractor. A data-sheet diameter on a sibling model is not a fact about the row in your basket.
Is a red or yellow handle a 1,000 V tool?
No. Colour is branding or a comfort coat. The only listing here with VDE and 1000 V on the set name is the KNIPEX 03 06 180. The red plastic-coated 03 01 180 cites DIN ISO 5746 and is not insulated. Soft-grip green, blue, or black handles in this set are comfort only.
Why do amazon.co.uk titles say lineman and combination?
Sellers mix a UK drawer name with a US trade name. The word pair does not prove the head. Check the photo for a flat jaw, an oval seat, and a cutter near the pivot. The DOWELL rows and some WORKPRO bullets use both words. Geometry and naming sit on the versus-linesman page, not in the price sort.
When is a £5 pair enough?
It is enough as a compact spare. Amtech at £5.62 and Blue Spot at £4.25 are the cheap end of this set. UK notes put Amtech in a puncture kit. Blue Spot has only 14 ratings and no millimetre length in the title. Neither prints a cutter diameter or a voltage mark, so they are not a household 180 mm pair and not a live-work tool.
