8 inch or 14 inch bolt cutters

Updated: October 2026

You have two amazon.co.uk tabs open, one an 8 inch bolt cutter and one a 14 inch cropper, and both titles say heavy duty. The 8 inch or 14 inch bolt cutters choice is between about 200 mm at roughly 280–350 g and about 350 mm at 840 g to 1.09 kg. The full set is on the [bolt cutters comparison](/hub/pliers/bolt-cutters). The Products Compared editorial team set the two classes side by side on 16 October 2026. They are not one tool in two colours

Compact, in Wonkee Donkee’s terms, means about 200 mm and lighter work such as fencing wire. That shop guide then groups compact tools with 12 inch and 14 inch tools at a rule-of-thumb 6 mm in soft or medium material. The 8 inch tools that print a weight run from 280 g to 350 g. The 14 inch tools run from 840 g to 1.09 kg. A fence post that stops the long handles also stops the cut. “Heavy duty” is printed on both classes and decides neither. The buying guide keeps diameter first and length second.

When the 8 inch listing is the one

Choose a 200 mm tool when the wire is at or under the figure that tool prints, or when the gap is too tight for a 14 inch swing. The WORKPRO 200 mm states 2.3 mm and says cutting locks is not recommended. The SHALL 210 mm mini states steel wire 2.4 mm, iron wire 5.2 mm, copper 6 mm and wire rope 4.4 mm, and it opens 7 mm. The HAUTMEC states soft 6.0 mm, medium-hard 5.2 mm, hard 4.0 mm and piano wire 3.6 mm. The 6.0 mm soft line belongs to the HAUTMEC. It does not transfer to the Brackit 8 inch, which states a 6 mm opening and light-duty wire, or to the Meccion 8 inch, which states no millimetre and claims padlocks without a diameter. Skip the 8 inch tool for a 5 mm bolt: Meccion’s shared reviews include handles that deform around that size. Fence wire stays on bolt cutters for fence wire.

When the 14 inch listing is the one

Choose a 14 inch tool when the piece is soft steel around 5–6 mm, a listing prints that class, and you can open handles about 350 mm long. The WORKPRO 14 inch is the page in this amazon set that prints it: 5 mm at HRC 42 or below and 6 mm below HRC 25, at 1.09 kg and about £17.02. It says cutting locks is not recommended. Only 18 texts are stored, and several name a 24 inch or 30 inch tool, so you plan from the HRC lines. Brackit at about £10.23, Meccion at about £19.99 and Roughneck ROU39114 at about £21.85 print no millimetre table on amazon. Screwfix’s Roughneck table states 5 mm soft and 0 mm hard, and that table stays on Screwfix. Skip the 14 inch tool when you cannot swing the handles, or when the wire is already inside a compact 2.3 mm or 2.4 mm line. The Houseran 18 inch prints no diameter and is not a third column here.

The recommendation, with the condition

A cheaper 14 inch title without a table is length and an alloy word, not a stated 5 mm cut. Take neither when the page has no capacity and the job is a padlock or hardened steel. If the job is already thin wire, a soft bolt or a kit, best bolt cutters sorts those three without calling either length the winner.

Common questions

Is 8 inch the same tool as 14 inch, just shorter?
The shape is the same family. The lever and the weight are not. These 8 inch tools are about 200–210 mm and about 280–350 g. These 14 inch tools are about 350–355 mm and about 840 g to 1.09 kg. A shorter handle gives you less leverage. The capacity is whatever that page prints, and several of these pages print nothing at all.
What do the 8 inch listings weigh and claim?
The WORKPRO is 280 g and states 2.3 mm, with locks not recommended. The SHALL mini is 322 g and states steel wire 2.4 mm, iron 5.2 mm, copper 6 mm and wire rope 4.4 mm. The HAUTMEC is 350 g and states 6.0, 5.2, 4.0 and 3.6 mm. The Brackit is 320 g with a 6 mm opening and light-duty wording. The Meccion is 300 g, with a padlock claim and no diameter.
What does the 14 inch WORKPRO actually print?
It prints 5 mm maximum at HRC 42 or below, and 6 mm maximum at HRC below 25. The weight is 1.09 kg and the price here is about £17.02. The same bullet says cutting locks is not recommended. Those two diameters are the planning figures. A review that describes a 24 inch or 30 inch tool is talking about another length.
Will a mini cutter do a 5 mm bolt?
Only if that mini’s own page prints a class that covers a 5 mm bolt of the hardness you have. The SHALL iron-wire line is 5.2 mm, which is iron wire, not a steel bolt. The HAUTMEC hard line is 4.0 mm. The WORKPRO 8 inch stops at 2.3 mm. A 5 mm mild bolt is the job the WORKPRO 14 inch states, if you can swing the longer handles.
Is a 200 mm Knipex the same as these minis?
No. A Knipex CoBolt around 200 mm is a separate cutter, about £49–£57 on the trade tiles in this research, and it is not one of the twelve ASINs. The HAUTMEC at £12.99 lists SUOBO as the manufacturer. Similar length does not make them the same jaw or the same price.
