What size bolt cutters do I need?

Updated: October 2026

You have a piece of metal and three lengths in the search box, and what size bolt cutters you need depends on the printed diameter, not on how long a handle you can store. Length is how a maker delivers that figure. This page is the order of the decision. The twelve amazon.co.uk listings, from £6.79 to £25.99, are on the [bolt cutters comparison](/hub/pliers/bolt-cutters). The Products Compared editorial team read them on 16 October 2026. There is no laboratory cut. If the choice is only 8 inch against 14 inch, use [8 inch or 14 inch bolt cutters](/hub/pliers/bolt-cutters/sub/bolt-cutters-mini-or-14-inch). Fence wire sits on [bolt cutters for fence wire](/hub/pliers/bolt-cutters/sub/bolt-cutters-for-fence-wire).

Start with the material, not the handle

A useful listing states a diameter and a hardness or a material class together. WORKPRO’s 14 inch W017004A, at £17.02 and 1.09 kg, prints 5 mm maximum at HRC 42 or below and 6 mm maximum below HRC 25, and it says cutting locks is not recommended. WORKPRO’s 200 mm mini, at £9.99, prints 2.3 mm. SHALL’s 210 mm mini, at £7.99, prints steel wire 2.4 mm, iron wire 5.2 mm, copper 6 mm and wire rope 4.4 mm. HAUTMEC’s HT0463-UK, at £12.99, prints soft 6.0 mm, medium-hard 5.2 mm, hard 4.0 mm and piano wire 3.6 mm. Wonkee Donkee’s guide is about 6 mm for soft or medium material, and jaw quality changes the limit. A 5 mm mild bolt can sit inside WORKPRO’s soft line. The same 5 mm in a hardened grade cannot.

What 8 inch, 14 inch, and 24 inch are for

Compact tools here are about 200–210 mm and about 280–350 g. They belong with thin wire, barbed wire and tight spaces, and only when the printed figure covers that wire. A 14 inch cropper is about 350–355 mm and about 840 g to 1.09 kg where a weight is printed. You pick it when the listing prints a soft capacity around 5–6 mm and you can swing the handles. Houseran’s 18 inch listing, at £22.99 and 1.49 kg, prints no table, so the extra length is not a third answer. Screwfix’s Roughneck 24 inch states 8 mm soft and still 0 mm hard. That tool, and the 36 inch beside it, are outside these twelve listings. A longer handle is the next step only when your soft diameter is above the 5–6 mm line and the maker prints the larger figure.

Jaw opening is the gap, not the cut

The jaws have to admit the piece before they can crush it. That gap is not the capacity. SHALL’s kit, at £24.68, prints a 15 mm opening on the 14 inch head, 7 mm on the wire cutter and 11 mm on the wire-rope cutter. A 15 mm gap means a bar can enter. It does not mean the edges will sever 15 mm of anything. Brackit’s 8 inch tool prints a 6 mm opening and calls the duty light. WISEUP’s set, at £25.99, prints hardness bands on the bolt heads and a separate cable head for soft aluminium and copper. Using the cable head on a bolt throws away the only numbers on the page. If the SHALL adjuster still leaves a gap, that failure belongs with how to use bolt cutters, not with a longer handle.

When the listing has no number

Brackit’s 14 inch cropper, both Meccion lengths, Roughneck’s amazon page and Houseran print no millimetre table. “Heavy duty” does not fill the gap. Meccion’s 8 inch bullet says the tool cuts padlocks and gives no shackle diameter. WORKPRO, on both lengths, says cutting locks is not recommended. A suitcase lock in a review is not a closed-shackle security lock. A blank listing can still nip mild wire you already know is thin. It cannot be sized from the handle, from stars, or from one success.

Common questions

Are bolt croppers a different size from bolt cutters?
No. The two names are the same hand tool: long handles, short blades, compound hinges. The size that matters is the printed diameter at a stated hardness. A 14 inch cropper and a 14 inch bolt cutter are the same length class, and the noun on the title does not change the cut.
What is the difference between jaw opening and cutting capacity?
Opening is how thick a piece can enter the jaws. Capacity is how thick a piece of a stated hardness the edges are claimed to sever. SHALL’s kit prints a 15 mm opening on the 14 inch head. WORKPRO’s 14 inch capacity is 5 mm at HRC 42 or below. Those are different kinds of number, and only the second one is a cut.
What does a 14 inch cropper state for soft steel?
In this set, WORKPRO’s 14 inch listing prints 5 mm at HRC 42 or below and 6 mm below HRC 25. Screwfix’s Roughneck 14 inch table says 5 mm soft. The amazon page for that Roughneck model does not copy the table. Brackit and Meccion 14 inch listings print no diameter at all.
Can a longer handle cut hardened steel if the hard column says 0 mm?
No. Screwfix lists 0 mm for hard steel at 2200 MPa on the Roughneck 14 inch and the 24 inch. Extra handle length adds leverage for the soft figure the maker printed. It does not invent a hard-steel capacity the table set at zero. A hardened shackle often sits in that class of material.
Which of these listings print a capacity?
WORKPRO 14 inch, WORKPRO 8 inch, SHALL’s 210 mm mini, HAUTMEC and the WISEUP bolt heads print a diameter with a hardness or a material word. SHALL’s kit prints openings only. Brackit, both Meccion lengths, the Roughneck amazon page and Houseran print no millimetre table. Match the job to a printed line, then check the live price on the comparison.
