Metal trellis vs wooden trellis

Updated: October 2026

The wooden diamond on the fence has gone soft, or the word metal sounds as if it ends the job. A metal trellis vs wooden trellis choice is a choice of failure. Wet timber rots. Thin painted metal rusts where a joint holds water. This page stays with that material decision for the frames in our [metal garden trellis comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/trellis-metal). The top pick when the old timber was screwed to a wall is Flexigro. The best value, the LYAZKMY moon 4-pack, is a powder-coated pot frame, not a fence panel. We did not run a weathering trial. Timber fails at the wet end

A wooden trellis fails when the end grain stays damp. British winters keep that bottom rail wet against soil, a fence gravel board, or a wall that never dries. RHS climber guidance keeps the bottom of a wooden trellis up off the soil, and Jackson’s Nurseries suggests something like 30–45 cm of clear air under a timber panel. Metal does not take that rot path. It can still rust. Replacing a rotten panel with any metal frame only solves the rot, not the fixing, and not a coating that is only paint. Types and fixings are on the metal garden trellis buying guide.

Metal fails at the coating and the weld

Read the finish field, because that is the whole claim these listings make. Ram at about £8.95 is painted. WELDUN is unfinished on the field, against a bullet that says weather-resistant. Flexigro is PVC coated. The LYAZKMY moon and circle packs, Cormunalis, both ARIFARO heights, and unho are powder coated. OUUTMEE’s field says galvanised steel, and the listing does not say hot-dip. Paint is a colour film. Powder coat is a baked film, not a zinc layer. PVC on Flexigro’s mesh is a plastic coat. unho’s bullet says a double-layered anti-rust coating, and one UK review reports rust at the tack welds after two months.

A colour is not a zinc layer

Hot-dip galvanising and a powder coat are a pair of processes, not two ways of saying green. The Galvanizers Association describes powder coat over hot-dip zinc as a duplex system. None of the finish fields in this amazon set use that sentence. OUUTMEE’s galvanised steel is the nearest word, and it is not a coating weight. Jacksons Fencing sells galvanised and powder-coated mesh with a 25-year rust service-life guarantee. That guarantee belongs to that panel. It does not transfer to a painted obelisk at about £9, or to Ram, unho, or Flexigro.

Replacing rotten timber

If the old wooden trellis rotted, the metal that replaces it has to fix where that timber was fixed. Flexigro is the listing whose bullet includes screws, rawl plugs, and clips. UK reviews include buyers who preferred it to timber that had rotted. That is a reason to look at this mesh, not proof that every metal listing outlasts wood. The clips are about 15 mm off the wall, shorter than the 5 cm the RHS suggests. A spike panel does not screw where the old timber did. OUUTMEE has no brackets in a UK review. The ARIFARO packs do not list plugs. The steps are on how to install a metal garden trellis. If the plant is a rose, width and ties are on the metal trellis for climbing roses page.

Common questions

Does metal trellis rot?
It does not rot the way wet timber does. The failure moves to the coating and the joint. A painted obelisk, an unfinished stake, or a powder-coated weld that holds water can still rust. Replacing a soft wooden rail with metal removes the rot path and leaves you with whatever finish field is printed.
Does a powder-coated frame still rust?
It can, at a chip or a weld, because powder coat is a film rather than a measured zinc layer. unho is powder coated and its bullet claims a double-layered anti-rust coating, yet one UK review reports rust at tack welds after two months. That single text is not a test of every coated panel. It is a reason to look at the joints in the first winter.
Is galvanised the same as painted?
No. Painted, on the Ram field, is a colour coat. Galvanised steel, on the OUUTMEE field, is a different word, and this listing does not say hot-dip or give a coating weight. PVC coated, on Flexigro, is a plastic coat on mesh. Powder coat is a baked colour film. Buy the word that is printed.
How does a wooden trellis fail in a British winter?
The bottom stays wet. End grain against soil or a damp wall softens, even if the upper lattice still looks fair. RHS and nursery guidance keep a wooden panel up off the soil, with a gap of about 30 cm or more, and they still expect you to preserve bare timber. A rail left in the dirt repeats the failure you are looking at now.
If my timber trellis has rotted, which metal type in this set is actually a wall panel?
Flexigro, the PVC-coated mesh at about £24, because its bullet lists screws, rawl plugs, and clips. The spike panels, including OUUTMEE and both ARIFARO heights, do not include those wall fixings. UK reviews of Flexigro include people replacing timber that had rotted, and they also say you still drill. The 15 mm clip is a shorter gap than a timber batten.
What must I not claim about lifespan?
Do not give these listings a life in years. Do not move a 25-year rust guarantee from a specified Jacksons panel onto a painted amazon cage. Do not treat rust-proof on a Cormunalis bullet as a test. Pressure-treated lifespan figures belong to other products’ guarantees, not to a trellis this set did not measure.
