Herbs for an indoor smart garden

Updated: October 2026

You have a countertop unit with holes or one small pot, and you want basil, mint, coriander, parsley, or chives within reach of the chopping board. Herbs for an indoor smart garden are a planting plan first, not a second product ranking. A full lid of seedlings looks like a harvest until the leaves shade each other and the lamp arm runs out of travel. The ten amazon.co.uk rows sit on our [smart garden comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/smart-garden). Which listing to open, and the weekly water and feed, sit on other pages in this cluster. Prices here are GBP from those listings.

A lid of holes is not twelve adult plants

Eight, ten, or twelve stations suit leafy herbs when you treat the lid as a seedling grid. Adult basil in every hole shades the cups next to it. Leave empty holes for bushy crops. The DRYADES Z230 is one soil pot at 14 × 16 × 15 cm, with a 17 W lamp and settings of 8, 12, or 16 hours. The title says no seeds and no soil. The white listing prints 0.7 litres. The black listing does not. Reviewers say the pot is smaller than the photograph. One plant, or a pinch of cress, is the honest crop. Parsley, chives, and basil at once need a multi-pod pump kit. Seeds are not named in the included-components rows. One iDOO review says the box arrived without them. Buy seed yourself. Closed-pod refills, such as Click & Grow basil or coriander packs, sit outside this table.

Basil, parsley, and chives

Basil is the easy start when it stays warm. The RHS says sow indoors around 20°C and pinch out flowerheads. Once it flowers hard, leaf production slows. Leave neighbouring holes empty. Parsley germinates more slowly. That is the crop, not a timer fault. Cut outer stems and leave the crown. Chives cope with slightly lower light and stay narrower than mint. Cut above the white base. A first sowing is a few cups of basil, one of chives, and one of parsley, with gaps. It does not fill every hole on day one.

Mint and coriander need a different plan

Mint spreads by rhizomes. The RHS says give it a pot of its own. In the Z230 that means mint alone. In a pumped garden the cups share one tank, and mint can still lean across the lid. Give it an edge cup and empty neighbours. Coriander bolts in heat and dry air. The RHS says sow little and often, because a windowsill plant goes pale and does not last. Cut while the leaves stay soft, then replace the cups when flower stalks appear. It can share a tank with basil for a short run. It will finish first.

What does not belong in the herb grid

Cherry tomatoes appear on some listing crop lists, including the Z230 attribute row. That line is a marketing list, not a yield test. The iDOO arm is listed up to 11.02 inches. Once a tomato stands up, that travel is short. LetPot SE says up to 20 inches, the Max 30, the Air 14, and the DRYADES 8-pod 15. Tomatoes belong on a taller rod, or outdoors, not beside a full herb lid on a short arm. Keep this grid to leafy herbs. If you still want one tomato trial, empty most of the lid and raise the lamp as it grows. Method choice sits on the hydroponic or soil page. Water, feed, and cleaning sit on how to use a hydroponic herb garden.

Common questions

Which herbs are realistic in a 12-pod lid?
Basil, chives, parsley, and short runs of coriander fit when you leave empty holes between bushy plants. Treat twelve stations as a seedling grid, not twelve adult bushes. Mint needs edge space or its own pot. Cherry tomatoes need more lamp travel than many short arms allow.
Can mint share a tank with basil?
Mint can sit in the same pumped tank if it has its own cup and empty neighbours, because the water is shared but the crowns still compete for light. In soil, the RHS rule is a pot of its own. On the Z230, plant mint alone.
Why does coriander flower and stop making leaves?
Coriander bolts in heat and dry air. Once flower stalks rise, leaf quality drops. Sow small batches often, harvest while leaves stay soft, and replace the cups when flowering starts. RHS outdoor timing is not a measured result for these amazon.co.uk kits.
How do I keep basil leafy?
Pinch out flowerheads and harvest tips rather than stripping one stem. Keep the plant warm and under the lamp on a schedule that includes a dark period. Leave space so neighbouring cups do not shade the lower leaves.
Is parsley slow on purpose?
Yes. Parsley germinates more slowly than basil. Wait for the first true leaves, then cut outer stems. A slow start is normal and not a sign that the pump has failed.
Will cherry tomatoes work beside the herbs?
Only if the lamp arm can rise far enough and most herb holes stay empty. An arm listed around 11 inches is a poor match once a tomato stands up. Prefer a taller rod, or grow tomatoes elsewhere.
Does the Z230’s one pot change the plan?
Yes. One 14 × 16 × 15 cm soil pot is one herb at a time. Compost and seed are yours to add. A household that wants several herbs at once needs a multi-pod pump kit rather than expecting the Z230 photograph to scale.
