Smart garden buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at a row of 12-pod lids and trying to decide which countertop garden belongs in a UK kitchen that gets little winter sun. A smart garden buying guide is useful only if it settles the method, the number of holes, the tank, the lamp, the plug, and the daily cost before a brand name does the choosing. This page uses the ten amazon.co.uk listings in our [smart garden comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/smart-garden). It names no single winner, and it does not set a weekly watering routine. Prices are the GBP figures from those listings.

Three kinds of countertop garden

Only two of the three countertop patterns are rows here. A pumped kit is baskets or sponges, a pump, and nutrients in water. The RHS says those roots need moisture, feed, and air. When the pump stops, the lamp shines on a still tank. The Z230 at about £29.99 is a soil wick. You add compost. Click & Grow is the closed pod, about £199.95 when checked, and it is not in this table. The split is on the hydroponic or soil page.

Pods, one pot, or a seedling grid

The number on the lid is a count of holes, and a hole is a seedling station. Eight, ten, or twelve suit herbs you cut and leave to grow. Twenty-one is the LetPot LPH-Max at about £269.99. One soil pot, 14 × 16 × 15 cm, is a single herb. A 12-hole lid looks generous until basil shades the cups beside it. The iDOO arm is listed up to 11.02 inches, which is short for cherry tomatoes. LetPot SE says up to 20 inches, the Air 14, the Max 30, and the DRYADES 8-pod 15. Those are listing claims. Sow fewer large plants than there are holes.

Tank, lamp, and who controls the timer

A larger tank means fewer trips with a jug. It does not save roots if the pump has stopped. Printed volumes run from 0.7 litres on the white Z230 to 7.5 on the LetPot Max. The Air prints both 3.5 and 4 litres. iDOO and the black Z230 print no capacity. Lamps run from 17 W to 36 W. Button hours are 8, 12, or 16 on the Z230, 16 on and 8 off on the DRYADES 8-pod, and 12, 14, or 16 on Normodic. App and Wi-Fi are claimed on the LetPot rows only. Hocomay prints no timer hours.

Plug and what a day of light costs

Every unit plugs in, including the soil pot. Regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 expects a UK plug, or a conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse. Electrical Safety First says check the BS 1363 mark, the fuse, and the cable clamp. A travel adapter is the wrong tool for a lamp that runs for many hours. If the plug is hot, unplug it. One shared LetPot review reports no UK plug. That text describes a 12-pod, 5.5 litre pattern, not the 21-pod Max. One Z230 review still needed a UK to EU adapter. At Ofgem’s October to December 2026 Direct Debit average of 26.32 pence per kWh, 24 W for 16 hours is about 10 pence a day before the pump.

Read the listing in this order

Read method first, then stations, then the reservoir as printed, including a blank where the listing is blank. Then lamp watts, and whether a button, an LCD, or an app sets the clock. Then the plug, and which reviews belong to that ASIN. Three LetPot rows show 4.2 from 1,404, one shared line. The two Z230 colours show 4.4 from 376, one shared text block. Hocomay has no review line. REEPLAR is 4.8 from 8, a thinner file.

Common questions

Is a smart garden the same thing as a hydroponic kit?
Often, on these amazon.co.uk pages, yes. A pumped kit with sponges and nutrient solution is a small hydroponic system. The DRYADES Z230 is the exception: a soil pot on a wick, and the title says no seeds and no soil. Click & Grow’s closed pods are a third pattern and they are not rows here.
How many pods do I need for herbs?
Eight, ten, or twelve holes, if you treat them as seedlings and cut often. One 14 × 16 × 15 cm soil pot is one herb. Twenty-one holes is the LetPot Max at about £269.99. A full lid of adult basil shades itself, so leave gaps for anything bushy.
Does a bigger tank only mean fewer refills?
It means you top up less often. The jump from 0.7 litres on the white Z230 to 5.5 litres on the LetPot SE, or 7.5 on the Max, is that difference. A stopped pump still leaves roots in still water. iDOO’s ID-IG301 does not print a volume, so you cannot shop it by litres.
Do I need an app?
You need a timer the unit will keep. Buttons are enough where the listing prints 8, 12, 14, or 16 hours. App and Wi-Fi are claimed on the three LetPot rows only. Hocomay prints no timer hours, so the gap is a missing schedule, not a missing app.
Will a Euro plug and a travel adapter do?
No. A lamp that runs for many hours wants a BS 1363 plug, or a conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse. Electrical Safety First treats a travel adapter as the wrong spare. One Z230 review and one shared LetPot review each say a UK plug was missing. If the plug runs hot, stop.
Why do three LetPot rows share one star line?
LPH-Max, LPH-Air, and LPH-SE each show 4.2 from 1,404. The same review block sits on all three. Texts that mention 12 pods and 5.5 litres fit the SE. They do not describe the Air’s 10 pods or the Max’s 21 pods and 7.5 litre tank.
