Self-watering herb planter for a windowsill

Updated: October 2026

The supermarket basil on a UK kitchen sill is often dead within a week, still in the plastic it was sold in. A self-watering herb planter can stretch parsley, mint, chives and basil if the box is short enough for the sill and you can see the reservoir. Rosemary and thyme stay out of that permanently damp mix. This page stays with JOLANG, Fayavoo, Zymuegist and Skelang on the [self-watering planter comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/self-watering-planter). It does not cover 25 cm pots, hanging baskets or the trellis bed. Products Compared did not run a herb trial. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Herbs that suit a reservoir

Parsley, chives, mint and basil usually cope with moist compost. Grow No Garden’s UK herb-pot guide puts those four on the yes side of a wick box, and rosemary and thyme on the drier side. The Royal Horticultural Society warns that permanent moisture is wrong for plants that need a drier rest. Give rosemary an ordinary pot that dries between waterings. Saga’s note that bigger reserves last longer is a rule of thumb for large containers, not for a box about 27 cm long. A dark north sill will not become a herb garden because the pot has a reservoir.

Boxes that fit a sill

Fayavoo’s six boxes are 26.5 × 11.5 × 14 cm at £29.99, with a cotton wick and a water window. That 11.5 cm depth is the measurement that decides a narrow UK sill. amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 343 reviews, and the listing says no assembly is required. Zymuegist’s three brown boxes are 27 × 11.5 × 14 cm at £15.99, 4.7 from 35 reviews, with a fabric wick and a window. JOLANG is one box, 27 × 11.5 × 14.2 cm, at £14.99, and the stored file has no customer-review line. Six boxes need a long sill or a second window. Three boxes are the more realistic set for one kitchen window. A balcony trough of about 80 cm is a different object, named on the best self-watering planter page so it is not ordered as a herb keeper.

What UK herb growers reported

Fayavoo’s stored reviews in this capture are all from the United Kingdom, 50 of 50. Growers say supermarket herbs last longer when they are split into compost, and that two plants fit a box. Roots grow through the bottom into the water, and the base is narrower than the top, so a cat knocked one box over. Zymuegist’s 4.7 is from 35 reviews, and five of 13 stored texts are from Germany, so that star line is not a pure UK sample. Skelang is the step up in length: two troughs, 39.7 × 13 × 13.3 cm, £31.66, 4.4 from 104 reviews, all 22 stored texts from the United Kingdom. Reviewers use them for herbs in a south-facing bay. How to fill the trough is on the how to use page.

When a herb box is the wrong buy

Buy a herb box when you will grow parsley, mint, chives or basil, you can see the water, and the sill is deep enough for 11.5 cm. Do not buy one as a home for rosemary and basil in the same wet mix. Do not buy the MQJIAZHI trellis bed at £13.99 because it is cheaper. That listing is 40 × 30 × 142 cm, 3.7 from 66 reviews, and UK reviewers say the rods do not fit. A bullet that names cactus and snake plant beside herbs does not mean those plants belong in the box. The houseplant and succulent page is where that bullet is contradicted.

Common questions

Which herbs can live in a wick box?
Parsley, chives, mint and basil are the usual match, because they tolerate moist compost. Rosemary and thyme want the mix to dry, so a permanent wick is a poor home for them. Mint is better in its own box so it does not overrun the others. Basil still needs a bright sill. The wick does not replace light.
Should I keep the supermarket pot or repot?
Repot. UK Fayavoo reviewers say supermarket herbs last longer when they are split into compost, with about two plants in a 26.5 cm box. Left in the original plug, the roots stay in a tight block and the wick may never reach them. One owner ended up using the planter only as a tray under that plug, which wastes the reservoir.
Will a 27 cm box fit a UK sill?
The footprint to check is 11.5 cm from front to back and about 27 cm along the window, which is the Fayavoo, Zymuegist and JOLANG size. Six boxes need more length than one window often has, so three, or one, is the usual fit. Skelang at 39.7 cm is for a longer sill or a bay. Measure before you order six.
How many herb plants per box?
UK reviews of the Fayavoo boxes say two herb plants fit. That is a pair of basil plants, or basil plus parsley, not the whole supermarket tray crammed in. One box of 27 cm is a small bed. Overfilling is how the compost stays soggy and the centre plant dies. Mint gets a box to itself.
Why are roots in the water?
The wick keeps the bottom of the compost damp, and roots follow the moisture through the drainage hole into the reservoir. Fayavoo UK reviews report that growth. It suits mint and can rot a woody herb. Lift the inner tray, trim roots that have entered the tank, and let the reservoir empty before you refill.
