Plant grow light buying guide (UK)

Updated: October 2026

You are standing in a north-facing flat in November, the radiator is on, and your pothos is stretching toward the glass again. Before you add any LED hardware, the Royal Horticultural Society’s houseplant lighting advice is blunt: use artificial light only where natural daylight is already insufficient, and let leaf colour tell you whether intensity is wrong. This plants lamp buying guide walks through mount, real wattage, timers, spectrum claims and review evidence on amazon.co.uk. It stops before ranking models. That ranking lives in our [plants lamp comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/plants-lamp).

When artificial light is worth it

Check the free daylight before you spend. A bright south or east window may only need a weekly turn of the pot. A frosted bathroom, a hallway shelf, or a desk more than two metres from a window is a different room, especially from October to March. Seedlings on a kitchen counter in February need a long photoperiod a windowsill rarely gives. A supplemental LED adjusts the light budget. It does not replace watering or humidity. Stems that lean, and new leaves that shrink, usually mean too little light. Tips that bleach while a lamp already runs twelve hours usually mean too much intensity, or too little distance. The RHS uses foliage colour for that judgement, rather than a seller PPFD chart.

Mounting and reach

A clip or gooseneck suits a shelf, a desk or the edge of a worktop. You aim one or two heads over seedlings or succulents. On a tall plant the neck still lights the stem, because bending it does not add thirty centimetres. A telescopic floor lamp is the format for that gap. In this comparison the FECOLGT pole spans roughly 12–57 inches and the Garpsen pole about 23–67 inches, with the larger UK review pool. A ceiling ring needs a fixing you are allowed to make. An E27 bulb uses a holder you already own and has no timer unless you add one. A magnetic pair’s short auto-off is a session shut-off, not a daily cycle. The clip-versus-pole choice is in clip-on vs floor-standing grow lights.

Power, timers and running cost

Running cost uses printed watt draw. A 300 W equivalent line is marketing. Divide watts by 1,000, multiply by hours, then by pence per kWh. At about 27p/kWh, 20 W for twelve hours is roughly 6–7p a day. Which? did not lab-test these listings. A 48 W panel on the same schedule triples that slice. If the listing omits watts, leave the cost unknown. Plants also need a dark rest. A 3/9/12 h or 6/12/16 h cycle is there so the lamp is not on for 24 hours. Dimming, or a low brightness step, is the kinder start for seedlings. Assume a power cut clears the setting unless reviews say it remembers. The modes in this set are in timers and dimming for grow lights.

Reading listings safely

Full spectrum, 660 nm red and 4000 K sunlike are ordinary wording on amazon.co.uk. A PPFD number without a distance does not prove coverage. Read watts, timer cycles and mount type, then the UK review count. On the 19 October 2026 capture, Garpsen shows 4.4 from 1,120 reviews, the SANSI clip 4.5 from 778, and the Sonamindary single head 4.6 from 314. A 4.7 from four reviews, or 2.0 from one, is thinner evidence. Corded sets should arrive with a UK plug for 230 V. GOV.UK recorded a fire-risk report on YIKEDAN LED grow lights sold via Amazon. That name is separate from Yikuneng. Stop if a plug runs hot, you smell burning, or you see scorch marks. Charge a battery unit on a hard, ventilated surface. Fixed wiring is an electrician’s job.

What to decide before a model name

If the window already keeps growth compact, skip the lamp and rotate the pot. If the canopy is tall and you will not stand the pot on a stool, shortlist a telescopic floor stand and compare the stated height with the leaves. If the pot stays on a desk, a clip or a single head with a repeating timer is the smaller buy. Use printed watts for the bill, and confirm a BS 1363 plug on anything corded before you rely on it.

Common questions

Do I need a grow light if I have a south window?
Often no for tough foliage plants in summer. UK winter day length and the layout of the room still matter. If growth is leggy and leaves face one direction only, supplemental hours on a timer can help after you have used the free daylight. A bright bay that already keeps a sansevieria compact is not the same room as a frosted bathroom pane.
Clip or floor for a monstera?
Floor telescopic reach wins for a tall canopy unless you are willing to elevate the pot. A clip suits a smaller pot and a desk, because the neck cannot invent extra height. Once the leaves clear the shelf, the beam hits the stem. Compare the listed pole range with the plant before you buy a second gooseneck.
What wattage for one pothos?
These listings do not give a magic wattage per species. Start with a low brightness step, or a greater distance, then adjust using leaf colour. A stated 10–20 W desk or clip unit is a common starting band in this set. A missing wattage means you cannot cost the lamp the same way.
How long per day in winter?
Many guides cite roughly 12–16 hours of supplemental light for houseplants in the dark months, with a dark period overnight. Match a timer to that band. Leaving the lamp on continuously is a different habit, and it is the one these cyclic timers are meant to stop.
Are cheap LEDs safe?
Price does not guarantee safety. Plug condition and the UK review count do more. A single review is a weak signal when a clip near £12 has more than a hundred ratings. Stop using any unit with a hot plug or a burning smell, whatever you paid.
