How to plant a strawberry tower

Updated: October 2026

You unboxed stackable tiers and compost escapes from the side pockets when you water, or the top stays dust-dry while the bottom sits soggy. That happens when fill order, compost and watering direction fight each other. This guide is a soil stack for strawberries, herbs or lettuce on a UK patio. Shallow pockets dry from the rim, so the mix has to go in moist. It does not rank products. The ASIN rows are in the [planting tower comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/planting-tower).

Before you fill

Work on a flat surface with a tray under the lowest tier if runoff would stain decking or reach a neighbour. Stack the empty rings first and check that the locks engage. Do not add a sixth ring to a five-tier design. Extra height raises the wind load and can starve the bottom of light. Use container compost, not dense garden soil on its own. A peat-free or coir mix with fine bark drains faster than heavy loam. Pre-moisten it until a squeeze holds without streaming. Dry fill falls out of the side openings on the first water. Strawberries in fresh compost usually need less early nitrogen than leafy herbs. Leave locking castors locked until the stack is planted and has had its first water. Rolling a half-filled tier spills the mix. On an exposed balcony, pick a sheltered corner before you start planting.

Compost and planting order

Fill from the bottom tier upward, one ring at a time. Compost goes in the main bowl first. Firm it lightly, then tuck more into the side pockets from the inside so the opening is supported. Plant those pockets before you add the next ring. Waiting until the stack is tall makes them hard to reach and easy to tear. One strawberry per pocket is a safe start. Lettuce can sit tighter if you harvest it young. Leave large indeterminate tomatoes out of pockets meant for strawberries. For a five-tier column, set a tier, fill and plant, lock the next ring, and repeat. Fit a central pipe the way the leaflet shows, if the kit has one. Turn the column so the fruiting side gets afternoon sun without shading the lower tiers completely. Dry compost poured straight into the side holes falls out on the first water. A full dry stack watered once from the top leaves the middle dry and floods the base. Garden soil that sets hard pulls plants off the pocket lips. Water should leave the lowest tier within minutes. Vertical stacks dry from the top and from the wind, which is why moist mix and tier-by-tier planting beat speed.

Watering and aftercare

Water slowly from the top until a little runs from the bottom tier into the tray. Pause, let it soak, and repeat the same day if the top still feels light. Side pockets may need a gentle trickle in the first week, until the roots bind the compost. In summer, check the top morning and evening. The base can stay wet while the rim dries, so one drench does not fix every level. A narrow spout washes out less compost than a hose. After four to six weeks, a diluted liquid feed for fruit can help strawberries if the leaves pale. Herbs usually need less. Follow the container rate on the bottle. If the top wilts while the lower tiers look healthy, drop a tier next season rather than stacking higher. In autumn, cut back the strawberries and either overwinter the plants or empty the rings into a shed. Plastic lasts longer dry. Do not submerge a pump while you clean a soil stack. On a balcony, pair this with the load and drip checks in the vertical garden balcony guide.

When to stop stacking

Stop at the manufacturer's tier count, or sooner if watering the top no longer reaches the bottom. Extra height increases the tip risk in wind. Pre-moistened container compost, one strawberry per pocket, and a first water that weeps from the base will do more than another ring. If the column already wobbles empty, do not add compost and hope the weight settles it.

Common questions

Which compost for a stackable strawberry tower?
Use container compost, pre-moistened, with good drainage, not heavy garden soil on its own. A peat-free mix works if you water more often in a dry spell. Dry compost falls out of the side openings on the first watering.
Do I water from the top or each tier?
Start from the top until runoff from the bottom shows the column is charged. In heat, spot-check dry pockets and water those directly. One flood from above can leave the rim dry and the base waterlogged.
When do I plant the side pockets?
As you finish each tier, before you add the next ring. Waiting until the stack is complete makes the pockets hard to reach and easy to tear. Tuck the compost in from the inside so the opening is supported.
How many plants per tier?
Often one strawberry per pocket. Baby leaves can sit tighter if you harvest them young. Fruiting crops that need root room should sit looser. Shallow tiers punish overcrowding quickly on a sunny balcony.
Should I keep adding tiers for more height?
Stop when you reach the manufacturer's count, or when watering the top no longer reaches the bottom reliably. Extra height raises the tip risk in wind and can shade the lower pockets.
How do I store plastic stacks in winter?
Empty them, clean them and store them under cover if you can. Wet frozen compost adds weight and crack risk. Remove dead plant material so you do not store pests with the tiers. Label asymmetric rings before they come apart.
