Vertical garden balcony

Updated: October 2026

You have a flat balcony or a roof terrace and you want a planting tower that does not exceed the load, tip into the rail, or drip onto the neighbour below. Manufacturer weights on amazon.co.uk often describe empty plastic or steel, not wet compost, a full hydro tank, or thirty-six wall pots after a downpour. This page is placement, wind, drip and permission for UK leaseholders. It is not a product shoot-out. That stays in the [planting tower comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/planting-tower).

Balcony limits that come before the model

Royal Horticultural Society guidance on roof gardens and balconies says you should check what the structure can carry once the containers are full. A five-tier soil tower listed around 2.2 kg empty can weigh several times that when every tier holds moist compost and fruit. Treat the published item weight as hardware only, unless the listing states a filled figure. Spread the load on a slab or board. Leasehold rules often restrict fixings, clutter and runoff. Ask before you drill a green-wall bracket into cladding, or hang a module on a rail hook rated only for a flower box. Water from drainage holes or a hydro overflow can track along a soffit. Use a tray wider than the footprint, test it on a dry day, and keep the overflow off a downstairs window. Outdoor pumps need UK 230 V, a BS 1363 plug, and an RCD-protected circuit where the wiring rules require it. Do not run a permanent pump from a kitchen lead across the threshold.

Soil stacks on rails and paving

A soil stack is the common balcony choice because rain can help and there is no pump to shelter. The risk sits in wind and height. A column of about 65 cm becomes a sail once it is fully leafed. Place it in a corner out of the prevailing westerlies, not on a narrow slab where a gust can walk the castors until the stack leans. Locking wheels help you chase sun on level paving. On a slight slope they creep once wet compost raises the centre of gravity. Chock them, or take them off for the season, if the floor is not flat. Never roll a partly filled stack. Compost spills from the pockets and an uneven load tips the column. An empty weight near 2.2 kg is not the planning number. Assume several kilograms of compost, water and plants on each tier, and stay lower if the freeholder has not given a load figure. A mat under the base shows where tannin-stained runoff goes. Fill order is on how to plant a strawberry tower.

Hydro columns and green walls outdoors

A hydro column on a balcony combines tank weight with electronics. A nine-layer listing near 9.5 kg empty multiplies once the reservoir is full and the plants mature. Confirm the floor before you fill. Shelter the control box from driving rain, and keep an indoor-rated kit indoors unless the listing says it can live outside. Pump noise carries in a quiet courtyard, so run it in the daytime if neighbours are close. A green-wall module still loads its fixings once it is wet. A 36-pot steel and polypropylene panel near 10 kg empty, plus water, compost and plants, can exceed an adhesive-only kit. A mechanical fixing into the structure is the safe default on a glass balustrade unless an engineer has signed off a lighter mount. The tray has to drain on your side. A narrow column tips. A wide panel catches the wind like a sail. Both want a sheltered corner rather than an exposed rail. If the lease blocks electrics, weight or drilling, use a lower soil stack on a tray inside the balustrade line.

If the lease or the slab says no

A freestanding soil stack on a wide tray, kept below the rail and off a slope, is the path when drilling and outdoor pumps are refused. Reduce the tier count if the empty column already wobbles. Skip a full hydro tank and a 36-pot wall until someone who knows the structure has confirmed the load. The empty kilogram on the listing is the hardware, not the planted tower.

Common questions

How heavy is a planting tower when it is wet?
Often several times the empty listing weight, once compost, water and plants load every tier or pot. A five-tier column listed near 2.2 kg empty is hardware only. Plan with the filled mass, not the item-weight bullet on its own.
Should I lock the castors on a sloped balcony?
Yes, or take the wheels off for the season. Unlocked castors creep when the stack is top-heavy and the slab is not level. Do not roll a partly filled tower. Compost leaves the pockets and the column can tip.
Can I fix a green wall to a rented wall?
Only with permission. Many leases ban penetrating fixings or external structures. A freestanding tower still needs drip control and a load check. A rail hook rated for a flower box is not a rating for a planted module.
Do I need an RCD for an outdoor hydro pump?
Use an RCD-protected outdoor circuit where UK wiring rules apply, and a BS 1363 plug on 230 V. Do not run a permanent pump from an indoor extension across the threshold. A power cut stops circulation until the mains returns.
How do I stop drips reaching the neighbour below?
Use a tray wider than the base, test the watering on a dry day, and move the tower if runoff tracks along a soffit. Do not leave an overflow path above their window. A mat shows where tannin-stained water from compost actually goes.
Do I need the freeholder's permission?
Often yes, for fixings, large external items, or irrigation that affects shared fabric. Check the lease before you drill or hang a heavy module. A private patio and a shared walkway balcony are not the same rule.
