Grow tent kit buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a UK flat, a spare room or a windowsill, and the parcel you nearly order is the wrong job: a 4×4 tent for two chilli seedlings, or a 50 W bar asked to fruit a 120 cm square. This grow tent kit buying guide puts the decisions in order before you spend. A humidity dome, a clamp, a small bar, a tent and a bloom bottle do not stand in for each other. The ranked listings, with amazon.co.uk shelf prices from 19 October 2026, live on our [grow shop comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/grow-shop). Prices move. Start with the job, not the tent

Five kinds of kit sit in this comparison. A humidity dome starts seeds and cuttings. A clamp LED helps houseplants in a dark room. A small bar covers a seedling patch if you trust the coverage line. A grow tent is for plants under a serious light with air moving. A bloom bottle is a late additive, not a starter. The Royal Horticultural Society’s indoor sowing advice is compost, a cover and warmth on a bench, which is a propagator job, not a reason to buy a 4×4 on day one. February tomatoes and chillies match a dome with a stated Type-G plug. A dim shelf is closer to a clamp, if hot heads stay off the leaves. A tent is next only when you want fruit indoors for months and you can ventilate. Two chilli plants do not need 120 × 120 cm.

Match tent size to the room and the light

Leave about 20–30 cm around the canvas so zips and ducts work. That is Greens Horticulture’s shop rule of thumb, not a test we ran. A 200 cm tent needs more room once a duct leaves the roof. Hydro Bros pair about 100–150 W of actual LED with 60 × 60 cm, and about 400–600 W with 120 × 120 cm. This folder has no 60 cm tent, and two shells near 120 cm. A 50 W bar does not fill 1.44 m², even if a bullet says it replaces a 200 W HPS lamp. Poles and leaks are on the grow tent 120×120 UK page.

Lights, air, and a UK plug

Read wall watts, not an equivalent-watts slogan. A clamp can be called a 600 W equivalent while it draws 40 W. A 50 W bar at 230 V, with no timer listed, is still 50 W. Leafy herbs are often cited around 200–400 µmol/m²/s and fruiting tomatoes around 600–900 at the canopy. We did not map either lamp. A tent needs air out through a filter and fan, a low intake, and a fan over the leaves. A sealed tent cooks. A sealed dome after germination invites damping off. UK mains are 230 V, and a proper plug is a fused BS 1363. Type-G is a shape claim. A 110 V pump with no transformer is not UK-ready. If a plug runs hot, stop.

What to buy from this comparison

Buy by job. None of the seven listings is a complete tent kit, even though those cartons exist on amazon.co.uk. Pairing a 4×4 shell with a separate lamp works only if the lamp can fill about 1.2 m square, not if it draws 50 W. Take a deep-water kit only after the pump voltage is solved. Take CANNA PK 13/14 only as a late additive, about 15 ml per 10 litres for one week on the maker’s UK page, not from sowing day. The title and the specification disagree on 250 ml versus 5 litres. Lawful crops only. A tent is not a licence to cultivate cannabis.

Which job you actually have

If you are germinating tomatoes, chillies or cuttings to move on, buy a vented dome and watch the heat. If the shelf is already planted and the room is dark, a clamp you can keep off the leaves is the closer match. If you will fruit indoors for months, buy a shell you can ventilate and a lamp in the hundreds of actual watts. If the room is only 60 or 80 cm, do not force a 4×4 into it.

Common questions

Do I need a tent, or will a windowsill propagator do?
A propagator is enough when you are germinating tomatoes, chillies or cuttings to move on. That is the RHS pattern, and it is what a humidity dome in this set is for. Buy a tent when those plants will fruit indoors and you can ventilate. A tent does not speed a February windowsill sowing.
What size tent for two chilli plants?
Two chilli plants sit nearer 60 × 60 cm on Greens Horticulture’s chart, with about 100–150 W of actual LED. A 120 cm tent is more floor than they need. Both tents here are about 120 cm, so a smaller tent is a different listing.
How many actual watts for a 120 cm tent?
Use about 400–600 W of LED as a shop starting point for 120 × 120 cm, or a 600 W HPS if you can extract the heat. That is a rule of thumb. The 50 W bar here is much smaller, and an equivalent-watts line does not close the gap.
Is a complete kit better than buying parts?
A complete kit is better when one seller has matched the tent, the LED and the fan, and you have checked the watts against the footprint. The tents kept here include neither a light nor a fan, so this page cannot award that carton.
Does a Type-G photo prove the lamp is safe?
No. A stated Type-G plug is a claim about plug shape, not earthing, fuse rating or build quality. One clamp page here does not answer the plug question in the specification table. If the body or the plug gets hot, unplug it.
Is a grow tent illegal in the UK?
The tent is legal to buy. Cultivating cannabis without a Home Office licence is an offence under section 6 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, including for personal use. A tent is not that licence. This guide is for herbs, salad, chillies and tomatoes.
