Clay pots for plants: measure the rim first

Updated: October 2026

You are in a UK kitchen with a supermarket basil, or a cactus that has outgrown its nursery pot, and amazon.co.uk is offering clay pots for plants that look generous until you read the centimetres. A title that says large can still be 10 cm. The [clay pots comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/clay-pots) rows the nine amazon.co.uk listings we kept, with shelf prices from £6.99 to £28.99 on 19 October 2026. This page is the buying check before that table: diameter versus the plant you already have, a hole you can see, real unglazed clay, and a saucer only if the pot will sit indoors. We did not run a lab trial.

On this page

10 cm is a plant; 3 cm is a craft

Start with the rim of the pot the plant is in now, then look at the pack. In this folder the useful split is simple. About 3–6.5 cm is cuttings, seedlings, paint tables and wedding favours. About 10–13 cm is a small houseplant or a windowsill herb. Nothing here is a patio tub. Entry mini packs run about £7–£15. Mid six-packs that claim 10–13 cm sit about £19–£26. Green Thumbz titles the 10 cm six-pack as large.

Hole, saucer, real clay

The Royal Horticultural Society treats a drainage hole as essential in a container. A listing that says Has Drainage: Yes is a start. It is not a photograph of the hole on the pot that arrives. T4U UK reviews mention knock-outs that were not fully cut. If a disc is still attached, punch it. Green Thumbz 10 cm and both vensovo six-packs include a saucer. T4U includes a mini grid pad, not a saucer. The vensovo 20-pack lists twenty pots and no saucer in the spec. Leave a saucer on a windowsill if you care about furniture. Take it off outdoors in frost. Real clay is the third check. This comparison is unglazed terracotta or earthenware you plant into. A painted or lacquered finish can close the pores: vensovo’s 20-pack has a lacquered finish field, and the Green Thumbz 16-pack is painted. The unfinished Green Thumbz 10 cm six-pack is the clearer porous wall. If you are choosing clay because it dries faster than plastic, the terracotta or plastic pots page is the material decision.

When the centimetres disagree

Several vensovo listings print more than one size on the same page. The 10.16 cm six-pack at £21.99 also shows a 10.2 cm cube and a line of 10.2 × 10.2 × 5.1 cm. If the 5.1 cm height is what arrives, you have a shallow dish, not a 10 cm pot. None of this is a laboratory ranking. The best terracotta pots page names one pack for a 10 cm plant with a saucer, one cheap mini pack, and one listing to skip. When two centimetre lines disagree, plan around the smaller figure until the box is in your hands.

What to do when the box is shards

Clay chips in the post. UK texts in this set already mention broken or chipped pots on T4U and Annyswit, and non-UK reviews on Ubric describe several broken pots in the same file. Unpack on a table, count the pots against the pack number, and photograph cracks before you throw the carton away. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, asks for satisfactory quality, goods as described, and a finish that is durable enough for ordinary use. A pack of shards, or a large 10 cm pot that is actually a 3 cm craft cup, is the sort of problem that right is for. Once the pots are whole, how to plant in terracotta pots is the sequence.

Common questions

What diameter do I actually need for a supermarket herb?
Match the rim you have. A typical supermarket herb sits around 9–12 cm. In this amazon set that points at the 10–13 cm six-packs, not at 3–6.5 cm mini packs. IKEA’s 12 cm MUSKOTBLOMMA at £4 is a high-street size check beside Green Thumbz 10 cm at £18.99 for six with saucers. A 3 cm pot will not take that herb.
Does large on amazon mean 10 cm?
On the Green Thumbz six-pack in this folder, yes: the size line is 10 cm and the title still says large. It is the most plant-sized listing we kept. It is not a patio pot. Read the centimetres, not the adjective.
Do I need a saucer indoors?
If the pot will sit on wood, stone or a painted sill, yes, a drip tray saves the surface. Green Thumbz 10 cm and both vensovo six-packs include one. T4U does not; it ships a mini grid pad. Empty standing water so roots are not sitting in a puddle. Outdoors in frost, the saucer comes off; that is a winter job, not a buying job.
Why do two centimetre lines disagree?
vensovo prints more than one size on the same listing: 10.16 cm against 5.1 cm height, 12.7 cm against 10.2 cm, and 3 inch against 5.1 cm and 7.7 cm. Treat the smaller figure as the planning size until you measure what arrived. If the pot is not as described, the 30-day right to reject under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the path, not a second order.
Is a 3 cm twenty-pack a plant pot?
Not for a herb or a 10 cm houseplant. Ubric is 3 cm in the title, 3.5 × 3 cm in the bullets, £6.99, and 3.6 from 17 reviews. UK written lines in the file use those pots as aquarium and vivarium décor. JIESHEPR is 33–35 mm with a paint set. Buy those packs for crafts, not as clay pots for plants you already own.
