Best wood stain UK buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have sanded a pine table, a front door or a garden bench and now need to choose a tin. The difficulty is that “wood stain” can mean colour that soaks into bare timber, colour that needs a separate sealer, or an exterior coating that forms its own protective film. This best wood stain UK buying guide helps you choose the right family before you compare shades or prices. Our [wood stain comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/wood-stain) covers the eight amazon.co.uk listings and their current prices; this page concentrates on the trade-offs that decide which type belongs on your wood.

Three different liquids share the same name

A wood dye changes the colour of bare timber but does not become a weather coat. Colron Refined Wood Dye is the clear example in this set: it penetrates untreated interior wood, then needs a suitable lacquer, wax or other clear finish. If that is the choice you are making, our wood dye or wood stain comparison explains the difference in detail. A water-based colour stain sits in the middle. Furniture Clinic and YumCraft explicitly recommend wax, varnish or oil for durability. Film-forming exterior woodstains are the third group. Ronseal 10 Year and Rustins Quick Dry Outdoor are intended to colour and finish smooth exterior timber such as doors, windows and garden furniture. Rustins directs decking users to decking oil, while rough fencing is normally served by a fence coating designed for non-stable timber.

Choose indoor colour or an outdoor film

For indoor furniture, the main decision is how much control you want over the final surface. A dye followed by clear lacquer lets you build colour separately from protection. Either way, stain bare wood rather than expecting it to penetrate an old varnish. For a front door, window frame or smooth garden bench, choose a film-forming exterior woodstain that names the end use. BS EN 927-1 distinguishes relatively stable items such as windows, doors, shutters and garden furniture from non-stable construction such as overlapping fences. Our guide to wood stain for exterior joinery narrows the choice to the suitable rows in this comparison.

Check what the tin does not provide

Wood stain is not automatically a wood preserver. A decorative coating colours or protects the surface; it does not necessarily contain an authorised biocide to treat rot or insect attack. If timber is soft, crumbling, deeply split or visibly infested, do not hide the damage under a darker finish. VOC wording deserves the same care. UK rules under SI 2012/1715 set category limits for decorative coatings, and the tin should state its sub-category and ready-to-use VOC content. “Water-based” can mean lower odour and easier brush cleanup, but it does not prove zero VOC.

How the eight-product set divides

The amazon.co.uk extract dated 16 October 2026 spans very different quantities and jobs. Small products begin at £7.88 for the 250 ml Rustins exterior stain. Colron costs £11.99 for a 250 ml interior dye. Furniture Clinic dark oak provides 1 litre for £22.99 and has the largest review base in the set, 4.5 from 3,891 reviews. Ronseal 10 Year costs £35.64 for 2.5 litres, about £14.26 per labelled litre, making it the lowest unit-price option among the comparable fills. Common questions

Is wood stain the same as wood preserver?
No. Wood stain adds colour and may form a protective decorative film, while a preservative is formulated and authorised to control specified biological threats. If timber is rotten or insect-damaged, stain will not repair it. Address the cause and soundness of the wood first, then follow the exact label of any preservative and finishing system.
Do I need varnish over wood stain?
It depends on the product family. Colron dye and several colour stains need or recommend a separate lacquer, varnish, wax or oil. Ronseal and Rustins exterior woodstains are designed to form the finishing film themselves when their full coat systems are followed. Never assume from the word “stain”; read the topcoat instruction.
Can I use fence stain on a front door?
It is a poor default. Rough-sawn fencing is a non-stable end use, whereas a smooth door is stable joinery that needs a coating designed for dimensional movement and regular handling. Choose a product that explicitly names doors or exterior joinery, prepare to bare sound wood where required and apply the maker’s stated number of coats.
Is water-based wood stain weaker outdoors?
Not necessarily. Modern water-based exterior films can be designed for doors and windows, while some water-based products are only colour layers that still need sealing. Judge the complete system, named end use, preparation and maintenance interval. The base mainly informs application, odour and cleanup; it does not determine exterior durability by itself.
Which product here is only a dye?
Colron Refined Wood Dye in Georgian Medium Oak is the dye in this set. Its maker specifies bare interior wood and recommends a protective clear finish afterwards. Although one amazon field says interior and exterior, the product bullet says interior and Colron’s own FAQ says the dye is not for outside.
Why can a 2.5 litre tin cost less per litre?
Packaging, distribution and product positioning make larger tins cheaper per litre. Ronseal’s 2.5-litre tin works out at about £14.26 per litre, compared with roughly £32–£48 per litre for several 250 ml products. The saving is real only when the larger tin is the correct coating for your job and excess product is not wasted.
Can I use a “non-toxic” stain on a child’s toy?
Do not rely on that phrase alone. It does not identify a toy-safety test, food-contact approval or conditions for safe use after curing. Ask the manufacturer for documentation that specifically covers toys and follow the application and curing schedule. If that evidence is unavailable, choose a finish explicitly sold and documented for the intended item.
