How to apply masonry paint for a lasting finish

Updated: October 2026

A dry weekend is not enough to guarantee a sound exterior finish. If you want to know how to apply masonry paint, check the wall, forecast and tin instructions before loading a roller. Our [white masonry paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/white-masonry-paint) covers finishes and pack sizes; this guide deals with the job once you have suitable paint. Prepare until the surface is clean and stable, obey the weather limits for your product, and expect two coats unless its manufacturer says otherwise.

Prepare the wall, or stop

Masonry paint needs a sound, clean and dry base. Brush off dust and loose material, scrape away flaking coating, and remove dirt. Repair cracks and failed patches with material intended for that substrate, then let the repair cure as instructed. Treat algae, mould or other growth rather than sealing it beneath the new film. If brushing still produces persistent chalky powder, the existing surface may be friable or underbound. That powdery condition is a reason to consider stabilising solution; it is not a routine primer for every bare wall. Stabiliser on a firm surface can create an unsuitable glossy layer. New render must also be mature and compatible with the coating, while lime render requires a specified breathable system. For roughcast or deep hollows, use our masonry paint for pebbledash guide for quantity and tool choices.

The weather window is on your tin

Follow the application limits printed for the product in your hand, including conditions while it dries. There is no universal minimum: Dulux consumer Weathershield guidance says above 10°C, Sandtex specifies 8°C and above, while a Dulux Trade sheet gives 7°C and no more than 80% relative humidity. Do not average these into a convenient 8°C rule. If tins disagree, each keeps its own limit. Do not paint a damp wall, when rain or frost is expected during drying, or in strong direct sun where the manufacturer warns against it. Sandtex cautions against direct sun because rapid skinning can contribute to blistering. When the forecast is marginal, waiting is cheaper than stripping a washed or blistered elevation.

Apply two coats and keep a wet edge

Stir thoroughly, then cut in manageable edges with a masonry brush before rolling the adjoining area. Work from the top down in sections, maintaining a wet edge so one area does not dry before the next overlaps it. Plan for two full coats unless the label expressly permits another system for your sound, similarly coloured wall. Dulux consumer and Sandtex guidance specify two coats. Respect the tin's recoat time: Dulux consumer guidance gives four hours, Sandtex Microseal gives three to four, and Leyland retail information gives four to six. Do not automatically dilute the first coat. Other paints may require a primer or no thinning. The white masonry paint buying guide explains substrate and film choices.

When you should not be on the ladder

Stop when the wall problem is structural, persistently damp or beyond safe access. Paint does not waterproof a wall affected by a failed gutter, leaking flashing or moisture entering from behind. Bulging render, extensive hollow areas, recurring cracks and salts returning through the surface need diagnosis before decoration. Another coat may hide the symptom without fixing it. For a normal ground-floor wall, proceed when repairs are cured, brushing no longer releases loose material, the wall is dry, and the complete application-and-drying window meets the tin's limits. If any check fails, postpone the coat rather than hoping paint will compensate.

Common questions

How many coats of masonry paint do I need?
Plan for two coats because major consumer products including Dulux Weathershield and Sandtex specify that system. One coat is defensible only when the particular manufacturer permits it for your substrate and existing colour. Coverage and weather protection depend on the complete specified system.
Which temperature should I follow if tins disagree?
Follow each tin's instructions. Guidance ranges from above 10°C for Dulux consumer Weathershield to 8°C for Sandtex and 7°C for one Dulux Trade system, with additional humidity limits. The wall and fresh coating must remain within the required conditions during application and drying, not merely when you begin.
Can I apply masonry paint if rain is forecast tonight?
Only if the instructions allow enough drying or rain-resistance time before rain arrives and the temperature remains suitable throughout. Touch-dry time alone is not proof of rain resistance. If timing is close or showers are uncertain, wait for a more dependable window; wind-driven rain can reach an apparently sheltered wall.
Should I thin the first coat on bare masonry?
Thin only when the technical instructions for your exact paint and substrate say so. A Dulux Trade sheet permits up to one part water to five parts paint for a sealing coat on certain new bare surfaces, but this does not automatically apply to other tins. Excess water can reduce the intended film build.
When should I use stabilising solution?
Use it where compatible instructions call for it on a genuinely powdery, friable or underbound surface. After thorough brushing, persistent chalking may indicate that stabilisation is appropriate. It is not a default coat for firm render or every bare wall, and it cannot repair loose, hollow or damp masonry.
What should I do about algae before painting?
Remove and treat algae or fungal growth with a suitable exterior treatment, following its protective-equipment, dwell-time and rinsing directions. Let the wall dry fully. Correct the source where possible, such as an overflowing gutter, because coating over live growth does not remove the underlying condition.
When should I hire a professional?
Use a competent contractor when safe access requires scaffolding or specialist equipment, or when render is bulging, hollow, widely cracked or persistently damp. Professional diagnosis is also sensible when salts return or you cannot identify the old coating. Masonry paint is a finish, not a structural or damp repair.
