How to use paint stripper without letting the coat dry

Updated: 23 October 2026

The usual failure is a thin coat that skins over while you look for the scraper. You are about to open a tin on a door, skirting or a windowsill. How to use paint stripper here means keeping that coat wet and following the label. Peter F. used four amazon.co.uk listings from 21 October 2026, the TX10 sheet, Polycell's pages and the saved review themes, and updated this page on 23 October 2026. We did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Which tin to buy is on the [paint stripper comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/paint-stripper).

Set the job up so the stripper can stay put

Open windows on more than one side if you can. TX10's safety data sheet says the gel is harmful if inhaled and irritating to the eyes. Polycell's 2017 sheet classes that paste as a flammable liquid, so you clear flames, cigarettes and a hot-air gun before the lid comes off. Solvent-resistant gloves and eye protection match Polycell's how-to, and they are a sensible minimum on the other tins. Lay the door flat if it comes off its hinges. A horizontal panel is easier to keep wet than a spindle you are chasing with a dripping brush. Decant into glass or metal if the label says so. Have a sacrificial brush, a shave hook and the named wash within reach. Walking off to find white spirit is how a coat dries. Keep a bucket for sludge. None of these products belongs in a drain. If the paint might be pre-1980s and still sound, stop and read the lead section on paint stripper for wood before you coat anything. Chemical stripper is the next step only when that film needs to come off.

Lay a thick coat and use the label's clock

Bartoline's TX10 sheet says shake the tin, lay a thick coat and do not brush it out thin. Leave it about an hour. Unless you have fewer than five layers, plan a second coat. Coverage on that sheet is about 1 m² per litre. Reviewers who succeeded describe a thick goop. Reviewers who failed describe a skim that dried. On a radiator, one person kept a thick TX10 coat under cling film overnight and then shifted about six layers. Cling film is a keep-wet trick from reviews, not a line on every listing. Do not wrap a flammable paste and then bring heat near it. Polycell is the flammable one in this set. Polycell's own pages disagree, so the tin wins. The wood how-to talks about 5–15 minutes and says not to let the paste dry. The product page talks about working from 20 minutes and allows up to 4 hours. Test a small patch with a scraper rather than committing a whole banister to a number from a second website. A soft film you can peel is what the bullets describe when the paste has had its time. A dry crust is not that film. Nitromors, on the listing we saved, asks for 2–3 mm of green gel so you can see coverage. The 750 ml tin claims up to 2 m². No dwell in minutes was saved, so we are not inventing one. Reviewers who let it dry say it goes tacky until another coat goes on. Green is a visibility dye. In one review it also transferred onto a banister post. The chemistry choice, if you are still unsure which family you bought, is on the paint stripper buying guide.

Scrape, then wash the way that tin says

Scrape when a test patch shows the film has softened, not when a clock from a different brand has expired. A shave hook follows mouldings better than a wide blade, which digs the high points and skips the corners. Work with the grain on show-wood, and keep the sludge on the blade. TX10's sheet says a stainless pad, not wire wool. One reviewer used a wire brush on a radiator after an overnight coat. That is a metal-job anecdote. Copying it onto oak leaves steel fragments in damp grain, which can stain the timber later. The wash is not universal. TX10 names Bartoline Clean Spirit, or a mild detergent and water. Polycell allows water, or white spirit if you want to limit raised grain. Nitromors does not give a wash line in the bullets we saved, so you use what that tin says when you turn it round. Water on bare wood raises the grain. That is often acceptable if you are painting again, and a nuisance if you want a smooth clear finish. Keep the white-spirit note attached to Polycell. Do not assume the same rinse is what Bartoline asked for. Neutralising with vinegar is a step for alkaline poultices such as Peelaway 1. It is not the default for these four tins. If your label names a neutraliser, use that one. If it names a solvent wash, do that instead. An extra acid just in case only adds a residue the tin never mentioned.

If it dried or only one layer moved

Scrape off what will move, including the dry crust, and put a fresh thick coat on the paint that is still stuck. Covering a gel to keep it wet can help on a slow job, as in the radiator review, provided you are not about to heat a flammable paste. On stairs and shelves, TX10 reviewers needed repeat applications. One gloss layer per pass is a common description. Nitromors reviewers saw the same pattern: one coat struggled with one layer of old gloss, and further coats were needed for undercoat. Stop when the coating is outside the tin. Polycell failed on alloy wheels, a brick wall and a varnished bench in the saved sample, and one Nitromors reviewer refused autobody paint. Two-pack coatings and a dip-tank door are professional work. Keep sludge in a sealed container, not a drain. Lead paint waste is hazardous waste under British Coatings Federation PaintSafe guidance. Do not heat a wet coat.

Common questions

How thick should the coat be?
Thick enough that it cannot dry before the film softens. TX10's sheet says a thick brush coat, not brushed out. Nitromors states 2–3 mm of green gel. Polycell is a non-drip paste you lay on liberally. A thin coat that skins over is the failure UK reviews describe most often. If you can see bare timber through the gel while you are still applying it, you have gone too thin.
How long do I leave TX10, Polycell and Nitromors?
TX10's sheet says about an hour, then a second coat unless you have fewer than five layers. Polycell's how-to says 5–15 minutes and the product page allows up to 4 hours, so you follow the tin you bought. Nitromors states 2–3 mm and does not give a minute count on the listing we saved. Test a patch. Do not average the three clocks into one number and hope the film agrees.
Should I cover the gel with cling film?
Only to keep a coat wet, and not on a flammable paste you might later heat. One TX10 reviewer used cling film overnight on a radiator and then shifted about six layers. It is not a printed step on every saved listing. Do not cling-film Polycell and bring a hot-air gun to the same surface. If the coat is drying, a fresh thick coat is the safer rescue.
What if it has dried and the paint is still there?
Scrape away the dry residue and apply another thick coat to the paint that remains. A dried gel stops working until you replace it. That pattern shows up for TX10 when the coat is thin, and for Nitromors when many layers go tacky. If a second thick coat still does nothing, the coating may be outside what the tin is for. Stop before you flood the surface.
Water or white spirit afterwards?
Use the wash named on your tin. TX10 specifies Clean Spirit or a mild detergent and water. Polycell allows water, or white spirit when you want to limit raised grain. Do not pour the wash, or the sludge, down a drain. Water raises the grain on bare wood, which matters more if you are varnishing than if you are painting again.
Can I use steel wool?
Not if you are following TX10's sheet, which says a stainless pad, not wire wool. Steel left in damp grain can mark the timber. A wire brush in one radiator review is a metal anecdote, not the instruction for oak. You also do not neutralise these four tins with vinegar. That step belongs to an alkaline poultice such as Peelaway 1. Wash with whatever your own label names.
