Non caustic paint stripper: what to check before the stars

Updated: 23 October 2026

Every tin says it is strong, and you still have a sticky banister or a door glossed for decades. A non caustic paint stripper is one chemistry, not a promise that five coats will fall off in an hour. Peter F. read four amazon.co.uk listings on 21 October 2026, plus the dichloromethane rules, and updated this page on 23 October 2026. We did not run a lab test. Prices are GBP shelf prices. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The [paint stripper comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/paint-stripper) ranks the tins. Here you choose a legal chemistry first.

What you are allowed to buy

Paint stripper at or above 0.1% dichloromethane by weight is not a household product in the UK. Schedule 5B of the REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008 says a professional, outside an industrial installation, needs an HSE certificate before that stripper is supplied. HSENI applies the same restriction in Northern Ireland from 6 June 2012. Public guidance points you to a less hazardous product when it will do the job, because the vapour is heavy and easy to miss. None of the four listings is sold as that stripper. TX10 says methylene chloride-free. Nitromors Original says dichloromethane-free. Polycell prints no line, and a 2002 sheet is an older formula, not the flammable-liquid sheet dated 22 October 2017. Paint Predator prints no line either, so silence is not a free-from claim. You do not need a certificate for these consumer tins. You still read the CLP label.

Four chemistries, not four scores

Non-caustic means the formula is not a strong alkali. TX10's sheet still carries Warning, names benzyl alcohol, and calls the gel non-flammable. A solvent paste is a different family. Polycell's sheet dated 22 October 2017 classes the paste as a flammable liquid, H226, and names n-butyl acetate and cyclohexanone. Keep cigarettes and a hot-air gun away from the wet paste. A caustic poultice such as Peelaway 1 sits under a blanket, can darken oak, hemlock and iroko, and needs neutralising. It is not one of these four gels. Who should buy which tin stays on the best paint stripper page.

What the saved listings do and do not say

Read the chemistry line before the star line. TX10, pack titled 2 x 500 ml, was £9.96, methylene chloride-free and non-caustic, for wood, metal, stone and masonry. The volume field says 1 litre. The included-components line names a single 500 ml unit, so you check the box. Nitromors Original 750 ml was £17.50, dichloromethane-free, a green non-drip gel at 2–3 mm, coverage up to 2 m². It does not say non-caustic, indoor or outdoor. Do not import methanol from a 2015 sheet for an earlier tin. Polycell 1 litre was £19.99, a solvent paste for wood, with neither free-from line. Paint Predator is titled 500 ml and non-caustic, with a Tetrion filler knife, at £15.22 and 5.0 from six reviews and no review text. The volume field says 0.5 decilitres, so we are not publishing a price per litre. Thickness and wash are on how to use paint stripper.

When not to strip

Sound paint that may contain lead should usually stay. Pigments were common into the early 1980s, often under later coats. Current decorative paint has no added lead, the British Coatings Federation says. If a failing film has to come off, keep the debris wet. Do not dry-sand it, and do not burn it off with a blow lamp. A child's room, a long run of windows, a strip-tank door, dichloromethane work, and two-pack or automotive coatings are professional jobs. Test veneer and oak.

Common questions

What does non-caustic mean on a UK tin?
Non-caustic means the formula is not a strong alkali. On Bartoline TX10 it sits beside a methylene chloride-free line, and the safety data sheet still warns that the gel is harmful if swallowed or inhaled and that it irritates eyes. It does not mean you can work in a closed room. Polycell's paste is a different chemistry and is classed as flammable on its 2017 sheet. Read that label before you treat the two tins as the same idea.
Can I still buy Nitromors with methylene chloride?
The Nitromors Original listing we saved, 750 ml at £17.50, says the formula is dichloromethane-free. Household supply of paint stripper at or above 0.1% dichloromethane needs an HSE certificate under Schedule 5B, and the same restriction applies in Northern Ireland. Buy the tin on the shelf now and read that label. The fast formula people remember from the 1990s is not what this page is describing.
Is benzyl alcohol harmless because it is not dichloromethane?
No. Bartoline names benzyl alcohol on the TX10 sheet and still classifies the product as harmful if inhaled and irritating to the eyes. Dichloromethane is the solvent the consumer rules restrict. Other solvents remain solvents. Wear the gloves the label asks for, keep the room aired, and do not treat a free-from line as permission to leave a coat dwelling in a shut room.
Why is Polycell flammable if the bullet says safe to use?
The amazon.co.uk bullets include the words safe to use. The safety data sheet dated 22 October 2017 classes Polycell Maximum Strength as a flammable liquid, H226, and names n-butyl acetate and cyclohexanone. The bullet does not override that sheet. Keep flames and a hot-air gun away from the wet paste, and ventilate. If the room is too small to air, choose a different approach or stop.
When is a poultice a better idea than a 500 ml gel?
A poultice earns its place on ornamental detail where a brush gel dries before the film softens, or where you need a long dwell under a blanket. Peelaway 1 is alkaline and can darken oak, hemlock and iroko, so you test first and you neutralise afterwards. None of the four saved amazon.co.uk tins is that poultice. A flat door in ordinary gloss is usually a gel or paste job, with a second coat budgeted in.
Do I need an HSE certificate for the tins in this comparison?
Not for these consumer formulas, as long as they stay under the dichloromethane restriction. The certificate is for dichloromethane paint stripper supplied to a professional outside an industrial installation. You still follow the label, ventilate, and leave sound lead paint. A caustic poultice such as Peelaway 1 can darken oak, hemlock and iroko, so that chemistry starts with a test patch. TX10 is sold as non-caustic, and you still trial oak before a whole table.
