Montana Gold or cheap spray cans: one can or a box

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing between one Montana can at £12.99 and a 200 ml colour box that can cost £11.55 or several times that. The shelf prices look like a contest. They are two different tools. Montana Gold or cheap spray cans, on this page, means when the Amazon GOLD listing is the right buy, when a multipack is the right buy, and when a named can in a UK shop is clearer than either. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The whole set is the [graffiti cans comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/graffiti-cans).

What the £12.99 listing is

B004O78N86 is one 400 ml can, 230 g, model MXG-S9000, at £12.99, 4.4 from 1,422 reviews. That review weight is why it is the top pick. How the roles were scored is best graffiti cans. Full cure is 15 minutes and dry time is 8 hours. The title mixes Gold, Shock and Black. The colour field says Black, Gold. UK reviews mention gold chrome, silver and fluorescent red. MXG-S9000 matches the Shock Black code family. The reviews still describe other colours. £12.99 is a known 400 ml buy only after the live cap matches.

What low pressure means here

Montana's GOLD help page describes a low-pressure nitrocellulose acrylic and level caps that, with practice, run from about a 0.4 cm line to about 25 cm. Low pressure means less paint per second, so you can pull a line. It does not mean the can holds less than 400 ml. Shop pages disagree between low, medium and dual-pressure. Use the manufacturer for the system. A 16-plus line under UK law misses Northern Ireland, where the sale offence is under 18. Montana Black is not in this table. One ASIN will not give you both a fill can and a detail can.

What the multipacks are instead

Every other kept listing is 200 ml cans. The fluorescent six-pack is £11.55, 4.1 from 1,052. TLP is £19.66. Gloss sets run from £38 and £39 up to £58, £62 and £65. None publishes a pressure. A low price is not a high-pressure valve. Reviews, especially on the neon boxes, report short fill, spit, missing colours and gloss tins where neon was expected. Bastelzone's £38 six-pack shares its 357 reviews with the £65 twelve-pack. Per labelled litre the £11.55 box looks far cheaper than £12.99 for 0.4 litres, until a tin arrives half empty. Age, volume and colour contracts are the graffiti spray paint buying guide.

Which to buy

Buy the £12.99 can when you want one 400 ml GOLD-system can and the live page shows the shade. Buy a 200 ml box when you want several colours and can live with short cans or a seller's mix. The £11.55 pack is the value end of that choice. A gloss six-pack at £38 or £39 is for named solid colours, with thinner UK evidence. Buy the shop can when the goal is Shock Black in words: Cass Art at £6.95 or Fred Aldous at £9.95. Cass Art checks out at 18-plus and does not ship those aerosols to Northern Ireland. For distance, use how to spray graffiti cans and the label in your hand.

Common questions

When is the £12.99 can the right buy?
When you want one 400 ml GOLD-system can and the live amazon.co.uk page shows the shade you mean to use. You get the largest review file in this set, 4.4 from 1,422, and a size UK artist shops treat as standard. It is the wrong buy if the title's mix of Gold, Shock and Black still leaves you guessing, or if you needed six colours for a stencil this afternoon. Confirm the cap, then pay £12.99.
When is a 200 ml box the right buy?
When the job is several small colours, not one controllable line. The £11.55 six-pack is the value end of that choice. Gloss boxes from £38 upward suit named solid hues if you accept the review limits. You should expect 200 ml tins, possible short fill, and no published pressure. A box is a poor substitute if you already know you want a full GOLD can in one checked colour.
Is the cheap box high-pressure?
Not on any fact in this comparison. Montana publishes low pressure for GOLD. The multipacks do not publish a pressure at all. A low price is not a high-pressure valve. Spray them as the bullet describes, usually thin coats from the distance that bullet prints, and do not assume a harder fan than the £12.99 can.
Is this Amazon can Shock Black?
Only if the page you are looking at shows that shade. The model is MXG-S9000, close to Cass Art's SH9000 Shock Black, but the Amazon title also says Gold and the reviews mention chrome, silver and fluorescent red. Cass Art's own Shock Black is £6.95 and Fred Aldous is £9.95. If Shock Black is the goal, those named listings are clearer than B004O78N86.
Why do shops charge less for GOLD?
They are selling a named shade on their own shelf. Graffiti Gallery's Gold cans are about £5.65 to £5.89, Cass Art's Shock Black is £6.95, and Fred Aldous is £9.95. The Amazon row is £12.99 for an ASIN whose title does not lock the colour, with 1,422 reviews attached to that ASIN. Shop price and Amazon price are both real. They are not the same offer. Pick the offer whose colour words you can read.
Can I learn outlines on a multipack?
You can practise thin passes and letter shapes on a 200 ml can if the surface is one you may paint and the can actually sprays. You will not be learning the GOLD low-pressure valve, because these boxes do not state that valve. Short fill and spit show up in the cheap-pack reviews, so a practice tin may run out or spit sooner than a 400 ml GOLD can. For the distances, use the how-to page and the label on the can in your hand.
