Matt vs silk black paint

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have just finished a black wall, the colour looks right, and a bag has left a pale streak at shoulder height. Matt vs silk black paint is that argument, even when the tin in front of you says soft sheen rather than silk. This page is the one trade-off. The [black wall paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/black-wall-paint) lists both Johnstone's 2.5 L tins. Prices were read on amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The mark is the finish, not a bad roller

A pale streak on new matt black is usually burnish. Ordinary matt is porous. A hand, a belt or a cloth polishes the pigment and leaves a lighter patch. The Stain Library, reviewing matt emulsion in September 2026, describes that pattern and says a fresh coat is the realistic repair. Washable matt is a different product. On the Johnstone's matt in this set, reviewers say a light touch leaves a mark and that wiping makes it worse. That matches the porous-matt account. The soft sheen listing does not print a washable specification. One reviewer says it does not mark and wipes clean. One comment is not a BS EN 13300 class, and neither tin prints a class. If you have already marked the matt, do not keep rubbing it. You will polish a larger pale area. The repair, once the film is cured enough to take paint, is another coat, or a change of finish on the next tin.

What matt is for

Matt hides bumps, filler edges and a slightly wavy plaster wall. Screwfix's emulsion guide puts it in living rooms, bedrooms and ceilings for that reason, and says it marks more. Crown's Grey Black bullets in this set say the same thing from another brand: this matt for bedrooms and living rooms, silk for kitchens and bathrooms, mid sheen for halls. The Johnstone's matt is £16.99 for 2.5 L, and the listing states 32 m² for the tin with a 1–2 hour touch dry. The range line includes kitchens and bathrooms. The reviews do not support a wipeable kitchen film. Use it on a ceiling, or on a bedroom wall the bed does not touch and people do not brush past. Matt will not turn a strong white-to-black change into a one-coat job. Skip it behind a sofa, in a hall, or on the stair wall where hands find the plaster.

What soft sheen is for

Soft sheen is Johnstone's phrase for a finish it calls more contemporary and subtler than silk. It is not a gloss number you can treat as silk, and it is not matt. Silk, in the Screwfix split, is the hall, kitchen and bathroom finish because it is more durable and because it shows defects. The Stain Library's silk note says it wipes, and the fault is uneven sheen plus every line of filler. Expect a version of that on black, where a shiny patch reads even louder than it would on a cream wall. The soft sheen tin is the same £16.99 and the same 2.5 L, at 4.5 from 950 ratings. Bullets state 12 m² per litre. A coverage field prints 12 m², so plan from the per-litre line. Several reviewers need two coats over white. Some say the dry black looks grey or indigo, which is a colour comment, not a sheen class. The one wipe-clean review is not permission to sell the tin to yourself as scrubbable. Use it where people pass: the hall, the stairs, the wall a chair back hits.

Same price, different risk

If the wall will be touched, buy the soft sheen and accept that lumps show. If the wall will mostly be looked at, buy the matt and accept pale marks. They cost the same, so the best value badge on the matt is not a reason to put it in a hallway. The top pick in this set is the soft sheen for that touched wall. The matt remains the flat film at about £6.80 a litre when the scuff will not happen. The wall beside a bed that the duvet brushes every morning is a soft-sheen wall, even if you wanted the fashionably flat look. The ceiling above it can be the matt. Do not split one wall between the two tins to save a wet edge. The join will flash. The best black paint for walls page places the other four tins. None of them changes this pair's price. Crown costs more and is named Grey Black.

When neither tin is the right black

You want a flat look and a wall you can wipe. Neither Johnstone's tin prints a wet-scrub class. The matt's reviews argue against wiping. The soft sheen's single wipe-clean comment is not a spec, and the finish is not flat. The product the shops sell for that brief is a washable matt such as Dulux Easycare Washable & Tough Rich Black, listed at B&Q around £30 for 2.5 L, or a Crown easyclean matt. Those tins are outside this set. Which? washable tests on white matt do not transfer. If the feature wall is one surface and you still want matt, read the black feature wall page before you put the dead matt behind a sofa. A silk or soft sheen will not make a damp wall healthy, and a matt will not either. Finish is about marks and lumps. Moisture is a different tin, and a different repair, if the black is there to hide mould.

Common questions

Will matt black mark if I touch it?
On this Johnstone's matt, reviewers say yes. A light touch leaves a pale mark, and wiping makes it worse. That fits ordinary matt, which burnishes, rather than a one-off bad roller. The listing prints no washable figure and no wet-scrub class. A ceiling or a wall nobody brushes can still be the right place for it. A hall is not.
Does soft sheen look shiny on a black wall?
It looks slightly shiny next to a dead matt, and Johnstone's calls it subtler than silk, not the same as silk and not gloss. On black, filler lines and roller marks show more than they would in a pale matt. It should not look like a skirting gloss if you have laid it evenly. An uneven film will flash, which is the silk fault in a milder form.
Which Johnstone's tin is better value?
They are both £16.99 for 2.5 L, about £6.80 a litre. The matt carries the best value badge because it is the flat film at that price, with the touch-mark reviews already counted against it. The soft sheen is the better spend when the wall will be touched, because you are not paying extra for the finish that survives a bag. Value here is not the cheaper sticker.
Is soft sheen the same as silk?
No. Johnstone's describes soft sheen as a more subtle finish than silk. Silk is the word Screwfix and Crown use for halls, kitchens and bathrooms, and it shows defects more readily. You should expect soft sheen to wipe more willingly than matt and to show lumps more than matt.
Should a hallway be matt?
No, not if people and bags pass the wall. Crown's own split sends halls toward mid sheen and keeps this matt for bedrooms and living rooms. The Johnstone's pair gives you the same choice at one price, and the matt is the tin with the touch-mark reviews. A hallway wants the soft sheen, with the limit that a filled crack will show.
What if I want a flat look and a wipeable wall?
Leave this pair. Washable matt is sold as its own product. Dulux Easycare Washable & Tough Rich Black has been listed at about £30 for 2.5 L, and it is not an ASIN here. Crown's easyclean matt is the same kind of exit.
