Anti mould paint buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have black spots on a ceiling and a £15.99 tab open, and you have not decided whether that tin will cover the room. An anti mould paint buying guide has to start with the area and the water, not the shelf price. The five white matt tins in our [anti-mould paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/anti-mould-paint) ran, on 19 October 2026, from about £15.99 for 500 ml to about £39.53 for 2.5 litres. This page works out litres, two coats and where paint is the wrong tool. Peter F. checked the listings, not a lab. A purchase through the comparison can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Measure the area before you trust the shelf price

A 2 m by 2.5 m ceiling is 5 square metres. Both 500 ml tins, Polar and Mould Solve, were about £15.99 on 19 October 2026 and about £31.98 per litre. Ronseal's 2.5 litre tin was about £34.19, about £13.68 per litre, and Zinsser Perma-White was about £39.53, about £15.81 per litre. The small tin looks cheaper until you divide price by volume. A cubicle can justify 500 ml. A ceiling plus the walls makes that £15.99 tin a patch. Ronseal rates 750 ml at 4–5 m² with two coats. A 5 m² ceiling sits at the top of that tin, and texture can push you over it. One review describes a ceiling of about 6 m² that the 750 ml tin did not cover. Who each tin is for sits on best anti-mould paint.

Two coats, and two coverage numbers

Plan two coats before you turn a coverage line into litres. Ronseal states two coats, a recoat after 4 hours, and up to 12 m² per litre, with tin ratings of 750 ml for 4–5 m² and 2.5 litres for 13–16 m². Amazon's field says 12 m² per litre on the 2.5 litre tin and 13 m² per litre on the 750 ml tin. Use the maker's two-coat rating for the shopping sum. Zinsser UK talks about 10 m² per litre per coat. The amazon.co.uk field on the 2.5 litre Perma-White tin says 12.5 m² for the whole tin. Do not add those figures together. Polar's bullets say up to 11 m² per litre. Mould Solve's field is 4.6 m² for the 500 ml tin. A whole ceiling leaves both 500 ml tins behind.

When the tin is the wrong tool

Anti-mould paint is a film for condensation that then dries. A leaking shower seal, a failed gutter or rising damp keeps feeding the same spot. GOV.UK says wiping mould off, without fixing the cause, does not stop it returning. Reviewers report mould back in about eight weeks on a wet larder wall, and patches back in about a month on cold walls that stayed damp. Soft plaster, or a stain that keeps growing, is a repair. Paint does not extract steam, and it does not discharge a landlord's repair duty. Awaab's Law times for social housing in England are a landlord duty. An NHS-linked page says get help above about 1 square metre, when mould triggers asthma, or when it comes from the building or from sewage. Do not sand live mould. Brush order is on how to apply anti-mould paint.

What the label must show

Ready-to-use paint sold in the UK has to show its VOC subcategory, the legal limit and the maximum content. The VOC in Paints Regulations 2012 set 30 g/l for interior matt walls and ceilings (subcategory a) and 140 g/l for water-borne one-pack performance coatings (subcategory i). Only Mould Solve prints a number on Amazon: 25 g/l. A Zinsser European matt datasheet puts Perma-White at 50 g/l under category A/i. Do not invent a figure from a low VOC bullet. Quote the tin in your hand if the page and the label disagree. These five listings are white. Ronseal says you should not paint ordinary emulsion over its film. A colour is a different purchase, set out on anti-mould paint vs additive. A year claim on a tin is the brand's condition if you follow the instructions, not a finding of this comparison.

Common questions

How much anti-mould paint do I need for a bathroom ceiling?
A 2 m by 2.5 m ceiling is 5 m². Ronseal rates 750 ml at 4–5 m² with two coats, so that tin is the ceiling decision and it can still fall short on texture. The 2.5 litre Ronseal is rated at 13–16 m² with two coats, which is the ceiling plus some wall. A 500 ml tin is a patch, not the whole ceiling, once you plan two coats.
Is a 500 ml tin enough for a whole bathroom?
No. Polar and Mould Solve are both 500 ml at about £15.99, about £31.98 per litre on 19 October 2026. Reviewers finish a shower or toilet cubicle with Polar in two coats. Mould Solve's listing coverage is 4.6 m² for the tin. Walls and a full ceiling need the 2.5 litre maths on the comparison.
Why do Amazon and the manufacturer quote different coverage?
They are measuring different things. Zinsser UK cites about 10 m² per litre per coat. Amazon on the 2.5 litre Perma-White tin says 12.5 m² for the whole tin. Ronseal's page gives two-coat tin ratings, while Amazon prints a per-litre field. Keep each number with its source and do not average them.
Does anti-mould paint stop a leak or rising damp?
It does not. The film is for condensation that dries between showers. GOV.UK says wiping mould away, without fixing the cause, does not stop it returning. A soft wall, a growing stain or mould back within weeks is a repair, not another coat.
What VOC number should I look for on the label?
The label should show the subcategory, the legal limit and the maximum VOC. Interior matt walls and ceilings are capped at 30 g/l, and water-borne one-pack performance coatings at 140 g/l. Mould Solve's Amazon field says 25 g/l. A Zinsser European matt sheet cites 50 g/l under category A/i. The other listings here do not print a number.
Should I buy Ronseal 750 ml or 2.5 litres?
Buy 750 ml when the measured area is inside 4–5 m² with two coats, usually a ceiling. Buy 2.5 litres when you are nearer 13–16 m² with two coats. The 2.5 litre tin was about £13.68 per litre against about £25.61 for 750 ml, so the larger tin is the better value when you will actually use it. Ignore the bullet that says 25 litres. The size field is 2.5 litres.
