How to strip wallpaper without gouging the plaster

Updated: October 2026

You already have a knife, and you are facing one wall of pasted paper in a UK room, unsure whether to attack it dry. How to strip wallpaper comes down to a test, then water or stripper, then a flat blade. The knife only lifts what the paste has released. If you are forcing it, the wall is not ready. This page is the method. The twelve listings are on our [wallpaper scraper](/hub/painting-supplies/wallpaper-scraper) comparison. There is no lab strip here. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If the paper will not let go after a fair soak, the fork is the [wallpaper scraper vs steamer](/hub/painting-supplies/wallpaper-scraper/sub/wallpaper-scraper-vs-steamer) page.

Test the corner and protect the room

Start at a corner or a seam you can afford to spoil, and peel a palm-sized flap by hand. If the face and the backing come away together and the plaster stays put, you may be on ordinary pasted paper that will respond to water. If the face skins off and a backing stays glued, you are on vinyl or on a paper that was painted, and water will not reach the paste until you perforate. If nothing moves, do not spend an hour proving a dry scrape. Soak first on ordinary paper, and change method when the corner test fails. Before any water, mask the sockets and switches and turn that circuit off at the consumer unit. Which? is plain about this. Width shopping, if the knife in your hand is the wrong one, sits on the wallpaper scraper buying guide.

Score, then soak

Perforate with a wallpaper scorer, not with the stripping knife, a kitchen knife or scissors. Which? is explicit, because a blade used to stab the face is the same blade that later gouges the skim. Vinyl and painted paper need this step or the water sits on the surface and does nothing. Then soak a strip you can reach, not the whole room at once. Homebuilding describes a sponge of warm water, a wait of about 15 minutes, then the knife. One DIY Doctor passage on soapy water says about 30 minutes. A fabric-conditioner spray method uses about 5 to 10 minutes with the mains off. Those times do not agree. Wet the paper, leave it, and test a corner of the soaked patch. If you are still forcing the knife, it is not ready.

How to hold the scraper

Use a 3 or 4 inch knife on open wall, which is the width DIY Doctor and Homebuilding name. Hold the blade flat against the plaster and push in short strokes, Homebuilding's direction being upward so you are not levering the skim off. A steep angle leaves a groove you will fill later. The paste should be doing the work. Work one soaked width, then soak the next, so the first patch does not dry and re-stick while you are elsewhere. If the knife is a thin flexible set rather than a stiff stripping knife, it will still lift softened paper, and it will bow if you ask it to lift paper that has not let go. The difference is on the filling knife vs stripping knife page. Backing left on the wall is unfinished.

Backing, paste, and when to stop

Vinyl often sheds its face and leaves the backing. Score and soak that backing as if it were the original job. When the paper is off, wipe the paste. Homebuilding's advice after a chemical stripper is to let the wall dry for at least four hours before you fill. If the skim is going soft, stop adding water. Stop entirely when the plaster is coming away with the paper. Stop if pre-1980s paint must be disturbed at scale, or around children or someone pregnant. The Health and Safety Executive's line is to leave sound paint, to wet-scrape flakes, and not to use a blow lamp or dry sanding as the default. A pre-1999 textured coating such as Artex may contain asbestos. For stubborn paper that has had a fair soak and still will not lift, move to a steamer with the plate kept moving, not a harder push with the knife.

Common questions

Can I scrape dry paper?
On ordinary pasted paper, no. Dry scraping tears the face, polishes the backing and gouges the skim. The corner test tells you whether a dry peel is even possible. If the flap does not come, you score and then soak.
How long do I soak wallpaper?
There is no single UK rule in these sources. Homebuilding's sponge method waits about 15 minutes. One DIY Doctor soapy-water passage says about 30 minutes. A fabric-conditioner spray method uses about 5 to 10 minutes. Soak, test, and soak again if the blade is still forcing the paper.
Should I score with the knife?
No. Use a wallpaper scorer. Which? says not to use a knife or scissors for the holes, because that is how the plaster gets cut. Perforate, then wet. Vinyl and painted paper need the holes or the water never reaches the paste. The stripping knife stays flat for the lift.
The face came off and backing is left. What now?
That is normal on vinyl. The backing is still wallpaper. Score it, soak it, and lift it with the blade flat. Leaving it and painting over it is how the next coat fails. Wipe the paste afterwards, and let the wall dry before you fill. Homebuilding suggests at least four hours after stripper.
What changes for vinyl or painted paper?
You perforate before you soak, because the face sheds water. Painted paper and woodchip are also the cases where DIY Doctor and Homebuilding move to a steamer, for about 10 to 15 seconds in one spot, plate moving. Which? still prefers a soak and warns that steam can damage plaster. If two soaks have failed, use the steamer page rather than a steeper blade.
When do I stop, and do I turn the power off?
Stop when skim is coming away, when old paint or a textured coating is the real job, or when the electrics are beyond a breaker you can switch off and mask. Yes, you turn the power off to the sockets on that wall before you wet it, and you mask the faceplates. A plasterer, a licensed asbestos contractor, or an electrician is the hand-off, not a sharper knife.
