Wallpaper scraper: width, stiffness and handle

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at a UK hallway wall of ordinary pasted paper, and the search results have put a stiff stripping knife in the same list as a five-piece putty set. A wallpaper scraper, in the sense Harris, Which? and DIY Doctor use, is the hand blade that lifts paper after the paste has softened. This page settles width, stiffness and handle before any model table. The twelve amazon.co.uk listings, shelf prices from £3.99 to £13.99 on 16 October 2026, sit on our [wallpaper scraper](/hub/painting-supplies/wallpaper-scraper) comparison. There is no lab test here. What a wallpaper scraper is for

The job is narrow. You score the face with a wallpaper scorer, you wet the paste, and you lift what has let go with the blade kept flat. DIY Doctor and Homebuilding still name a 3 or 4 inch blade for the lift itself. A set of flexible stainless knives can do a light version of that job, and it can also spread filler, which is why the titles say both. That second job is a different object, which the filling knife vs stripping knife page takes apart using the thicknesses printed in this folder. ProDec's Advance 3 inch page separates a low-flex, full-tang scraper from a thinner filling knife. None of the twelve listings here print full tang. Soaking times and the stroke stay on the how to strip wallpaper page.

3 inch, 4 inch, or a handful of widths

Open wall is where the guides cluster. DIY Doctor and Homebuilding name 3 or 4 inch, kept flat, in short strokes. That is a cluster, not a British Standard. A 4 inch knife covers more paper per stroke on a clear run of plaster. A 3 inch knife is easier beside a door architrave. If your wall is one plain rectangle, a handful of extra widths does not strip it faster. The wide end is the trap. huiziyi's pack includes 6 inch and 8 inch blades at a printed 1.2 mm, and one review of that listing says those widths are for filling, not for practical scraping. Buy the width for the wall in front of you. The right width still bows if the blade is a filling knife.

How stiff the blade needs to be

Stiffness is the split the titles hide. ProDec describes a scraper as thicker and less flexible than a filling knife, so it lifts rather than skids. In this folder the printed thicknesses are 0.7 mm on the KANGSIT five-piece, 0.8 mm on qisheng and on KZXXZH, and 1.2 mm on huiziyi. Under 1 mm is closer to a filling knife. Harris Ultimate, the only single stripping knife here, prints no thickness at all. Stainless steel on the bullet is not proof the blade will stay straight. KANGSIT reviews describe a bow so the edges miss the wall. A sharp side edge is a defect you file or glove, not a feature you wanted. If the handle line and the material line disagree, as they do on Harris (thermoplastic rubber and wood), treat the grip as unconfirmed until the parcel arrives.

What the price bands are buying

About £4 is the entry band. D.A.Y. Republic and the Omsscun eight-piece plus brushes are both £3.99, and the wooden set has a clear pattern of bent blades and handles that come off. The mid band, roughly £5.49 to £7.98, holds the stainless sets and the Harris 4 inch knife at £6.73. A 4.8 from 82 reviews is not the same fact as a 4.5 from 2,977. In an older house, stop before the blade. Lead pigments were common until the 1960s and lingered in ordinary paint into the early 1980s, and the Health and Safety Executive's line is to leave sound paint, wet-scrape flakes, and not to dry-sand or use a blow lamp as the default. A pre-1999 textured coating such as Artex may contain asbestos. Large-scale removal of that coating is not a scraper decision.

Common questions

Do I need a 3 inch or a 4 inch wallpaper scraper?
For an open run of ordinary paper, UK guides cluster on 3 or 4 inch, kept flat. A 4 inch blade covers more of a plain wall per stroke. A 3 inch blade is easier against architraves and window boards. Neither figure is a legal standard.
Is a wallpaper scraper set better than one knife?
A set is the better buy when the same weekend includes corners, frames and filler. It is a worse buy when the wall is one flat rectangle of pasted paper and you wanted a stiff knife. Harris Ultimate, at £6.73 for a single 4 inch blade, is the only listing in this folder that is just that knife.
How do I tell a scraper from a filling knife in the title?
You often cannot. Titles here say wallpaper scraper and putty knife in the same line. Read the thickness if it is printed: 0.7 mm and 0.8 mm behave as filling knives, and 1.2 mm still drew a review that the wide blades are for filler. A browse rank in Putty Knives is a filing clue, not a test.
Does stainless steel mean the blade will not bend or rust?
No. Stainless on the bullet is a material line, not a stiffness test and not a rust-proof promise. KANGSIT reviews describe a bowed blade at a printed 0.7 mm. FANTESI reviews describe rust within a day of moisture, including after a steamer and after washing. D.A.Y. Republic is not described as stainless, and those blades bend and rust if you leave them wet.
What should I ignore in a five-star line?
Ignore a comparison between unequal counts. A 4.8 from 82 reviews and a 4.5 from 2,977 reviews are not the same kind of evidence. Ignore suokoun's 4.6 from 2,348 where the texts describe another tool. Ignore a single enthusiastic line about a three-bedroom strip if the same file also records a handle coming off.
Do I still need a scorer, and when is the house a reason to stop?
Yes, you still need a scorer. Which? says to perforate with a wallpaper scorer, not with the knife you are about to buy. Stop and get advice when plaster is coming away with the paper, when pre-1980s paint must be disturbed at scale or around children or someone pregnant, or when an old textured coating would be taken off a large area.
