Wallpaper scorer buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You already know the paper on the wall, and the search results have still mixed a spiked wheel with filling knives. This wallpaper scorer buying guide is the if-then for the head: six wheels, three heads, or two, and the cases where a perforator is the wrong purchase. The figures are the amazon.co.uk prices in our [wallpaper scorer comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/wallpaper-scorer), taken on 15 October 2026 by the Products Compared editorial team. There is no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Who should skip a named listing is on the [best wallpaper scorer](/hub/painting-supplies/wallpaper-scorer/sub/wallpaper-scorer-best) page.

What you are actually buying

A wallpaper perforator punches holes so water, stripper, or steam can reach the paste. It does not lift the sheet. The scraper still does that after the paste has let go. A contour blade, a filling knife, or a vinyl-wrap kit is a scraper, and the browse node often says Scrapers rather than Wallpaper Perforators or Wallpaper Tools. A sharp edge and a wheel mark plaster in different ways when you lean, so that split is the first check. A missing head count is a reason to hesitate. The order of work stays on how to use a wallpaper scorer.

Match the tool to the paper

When the face is washable, vinyl, or painted, water beads until something breaks the film. Coral's page for the 65300 says the six-wheel tool is not for several layers, heavy texture, or woodchip, and is aimed at one flat layer, then steam or solution. Some UK writers still report a result on chip after many passes. That does not cancel the exclusion, which the score painted woodchip wallpaper page takes up. Zinsser UK specifies the triple-head Paper Tiger for large areas, and tells you to peel a vinyl face before you score the backing. Wheels and clips come off in those texts when people press.

Price bands on amazon.co.uk

The extract of 15 October 2026 splits into three bands, and none of them is a Brewers till price. Under £12 you have the Akfldms at £8.68, with no star line, and the Coral at £9.11. Around £16 to £17 you have the Paper Tiger at £16.12 and the WP Chomp at £16.56. The second Zinsser tool is £19.34 and the Stanley is £21.92. Brewers listed the Coral at £12.16 including VAT and the Paper Tiger at £18.49 including VAT, and sold that Coral tool as collection only. The maker's age line uses the wrong year for the Criminal Justice Act 1988, section 141A.

Evidence you should not treat as British

The WP Chomp line is 4.2 from 3,540, and only eight of 47 extracted texts are labelled United Kingdom. Four of those eight say a wheel snapped, locked, or the tool fell apart within a room or two. The Zinsser tool at £19.34 shows 4.0 from 97, and all 29 texts in the extract are from the United States. Akfldms has no review line, so a claim to cover thicker texture is untested here.

When not to buy one

Skip a scorer when the sheet will dry-strip, and skip it when the coating is not wallpaper. HSE asbestos essentials a28 is about textured coatings, not woodchip. Do not sand or scrape through a coating that may contain asbestos. Also skip the purchase if what you need is a bottle of stripper. None of these listings includes one in a box line you can trust. If the skim is blown, or a stair ceiling is out of safe reach, the next spend is a plasterer.

Common questions

Do I need a scorer if the paper already soaks?
If a wet sponge darkens the paste through the face, you can often soak and scrape without perforating. A scorer earns its place when the face is painted, vinyl, or washable and the water sits on top. Try a patch low on the wall before you buy. Ordinary unpainted lining is the case most likely to soak on its own.
Is the cheap six-wheel tool for painted woodchip?
Coral’s own page says the 65300 is not for woodchip, heavy texture, or several layers. The £9.11 price and 1,589 reviews do not override that. Some UK texts report a result after repeated passes. Treat that as anecdote against a maker exclusion, and read the painted-chip page before you order it for emulsion-covered chip.
Is a triple head better than two compact heads for a whole house?
For a large painted or layered area, Zinsser UK points you at the triple-head Paper Tiger, and this extract has 1,987 reviews with United Kingdom texts. The WP Chomp UK sample is eight texts, half of them breakage, and the Akfldms listing has no reviews. A whole house is a poor place to test an unverified bullet.
Why is a 4.2-star tool a weak UK evidence base?
The 4.2 from 3,540 on the WP Chomp is the amazon.co.uk aggregate. In this extract, 39 of 47 texts are labelled United States, and four of the eight UK texts say the tool broke quickly. Use the star line as the shop’s figure. Do not read it as 3,540 British rooms.
Should I score paste-the-wall non-woven?
Non-woven paste-the-wall paper is designed to dry-strip. If a corner releases cleanly, pull the sheet and leave the scorer in the drawer. Perforating it so you can flood the wall adds holes to a job that was meant to stay dry. Score only if a test shows the face will not release and you know it is paper.
What if the bumps might be Artex?
Woodchip is wallpaper, with chips in the paper. Artex and similar textured coatings are not the same product, and HSE guidance on asbestos coatings is not a woodchip method. If you cannot tell paper from a trowelled coating, do not buy a scorer to find out. Get the surface identified before you pierce it.
