Ready mixed wallpaper paste

Updated: October 2026

The sachet is cheap and the tub is heavy. Ready mixed wallpaper paste skips the measuring. You pay more, and you store a tub that can skin, split, or grow something you should not stir back in. It is not automatically stronger than powder. Buy a tub when the wallpaper maker asks for one, or when you will not measure water. Buy a sachet for ordinary paste-the-paper wallpaper if you can mix. The method is on [paste the wall wallpaper adhesive](/hub/painting-supplies/wallpaper-paste/sub/wallpaper-paste-paste-the-wall). Prices are from our [wallpaper paste comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/wallpaper-paste) on 16 October 2026. Peter F. did not lab-test a tub. What ready mixed changes

A powder sachet asks for cold water, a sprinkle, and a stand. A tub asks for a brush or a roller and a lid that goes back on. That is the convenience. Powder in this set starts at £3.49 for the 151 five-roll pack and about £4.50 to £4.79 for a stated 10-roll sachet. The Sophie Laurence tub is £15.31 for 5 kg. Solvite’s pink paste-the-wall tub is £26.00 for 4.5 kg. Wickes listed its own 5 kg ready-mixed paste at £13, with a claim of up to 5 rolls. For one ordinary room the lighter buy is still the Solvite 185 g powder on best wallpaper paste UK.

How far a tub goes

Coverage is still a guide, and it shrinks when the paper is heavy. Bartoline’s Easipaste page, a ready-mixed product that is not one of these twelve ASINs, says 1 kg hangs about one standard roll of about 10 metres, or about half a roll if the paper is embossed. On that rule of thumb a 5 kg tub is about five standard rolls, fewer if the paper is heavy. Solvite’s pink tub states up to 5 rolls from 4.5 kg, at 4.5 from 1,338 reviews. One heavy lining used the tub faster than the line. The Sophie Laurence 5 kg tub is £15.31, with 4.7 from 490 reviews, and coverage is not in the bullets. One reviewer hung 5 rolls. That is one review, not a specification.

Storage and a bad tub

An opened tub does not have one shelf life we can print. B&Q’s page for the Solvite 4.5 kg tub says do not store it below 5°C. If it smells sour, or it has dark spots, do not stir that onto the wall. A fungicide claim protects the film on the wall. It is not a licence to paste over spots in the tub, and it is not a damp treatment. GOV.UK still treats mould on a wall as a damp problem. Solvite’s pink paste thickens once air gets to it, so the lid goes back on between lengths. If you wanted the bucket, the powder steps are on how to mix wallpaper paste.

A kit is not just a tub

The Swiflee and Co kit at £15.99 is a 151 ten-roll powder, not a ready-mixed tub, plus tools. It is 4.4 from 267 reviews. The paste has gone lumpy for one reviewer, and a roller has arrived broken. The EETU kit is £24.99 for 2.5 kg ready mixed plus tools, at 4.6 from 48 reviews. The same sample includes a roller that came apart. Forty-eight reviews is a thin base next to 1,338 on the £26 Solvite tub, which says paste the wall and claims five rolls. If you already own a brush, buy the adhesive on its own. For paste the wall, the labelled tub is the Solvite 4.5 kg at £26. Sophie Laurence is the cheaper tub here, and it states no roll count.

Common questions

Is ready-mixed paste stronger than powder?
Not as a rule. Ready mixed means you do not measure water. Heavy and paste-the-wall papers are often hung with a tub because the maker asks for one. A 185 g sachet at £4.79 can be the right adhesive for ordinary lining. A £26 tub can be the right adhesive for a paste-the-wall vinyl. The match to the paper decides it, not the format.
How many rolls does 5 kg hang?
Bartoline’s Easipaste page says about 1 kg per standard 10 metre roll, and about half a roll if the paper is embossed. On that guide a 5 kg tub is about five standard rolls, fewer if the paper is heavy. Wickes’s 5 kg tub and Solvite’s 4.5 kg tub both say up to 5. The Sophie Laurence listing states no roll count. One review of five rolls is not a specification.
How long does an opened tub last?
These listings do not share one opened-life claim, and shop guides disagree, so we will not invent a number of weeks. Keep the lid on, stay above the frost line named for your tub, and throw it out if it smells sour or shows growth. B&Q’s 5°C warning is for the Solvite 4.5 kg tub. A covered powder mix is a different question, and figures around 48 hours belong to the bucket.
What if the paste has a skin or dark spots?
A skin from air is a reason to scrape the surface if the paste below still smells like paste. Dark spots, growth, or a sour smell are a reason to take the tub back. A DIYUK thread treated a strange new tub as mould and said not to stir it in. Do not paste that onto a wall because the label mentions mould resistance. The claim is about the film.
When is a sachet still the better buy?
When the wallpaper is ordinary paste-the-paper and you can follow a water table, a 10-roll powder at about £4.50 to £4.79 does that job for a fraction of a £15 to £26 tub. Buy a second sachet if the paper is embossed. If the roll says paste the wall and names a ready-mixed adhesive, the sachet stops being the better buy. Do not store the Solvite 4.5 kg tub below 5°C.
