Wallpaper paste buying guide

Updated: October 2026

The rolls are in the hall and the basket is full of packs that all say they hang wallpaper. This wallpaper paste buying guide is the order to use before you compare brands: the method on the roll, the weight of that paper, the wall underneath, then the format of the adhesive. Prices are the amazon.co.uk figures in our [wallpaper paste comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/wallpaper-paste), captured on 16 October 2026. Peter F. did not lab-test these packs. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. A title that says ten rolls is a guide for ordinary paper, not a measurement of heavy vinyl.

Start with the wallpaper, not the paste brand

The instruction on the roll outranks all purpose on a sachet. Paste-the-paper wallpaper is pasted on the back, left to soak, and often booked, which means folded paste-to-paste while it expands. Paste-the-wall wallpaper is hung dry onto adhesive on the wall, and it is not booked. Pre-pasted paper is soaked. Peel-and-stick needs no separate adhesive. Wickes sets those four methods out in its hanging guide. If the roll is silent, check the maker before you buy. A feature wall that says paste the wall, pasted on the back because a video showed booking, can stretch and walk the pattern. A traditional vinyl that needed a soak, hung dry, grabs before you can slide it. When the roll and the pack disagree, follow the roll. The wall-versus-paper split is on paste the wall wallpaper adhesive.

How many rolls the sachet really means

Hangs up to 10 rolls is a title, not a measurement of your paper. Bartoline’s all-purpose sheet, marked as a guide only, puts a 10-roll sachet at about 8–10 rolls of normal paper when mixed to about 7 litres, and about 3–4 rolls of heavy embossed paper at about 4 litres. Its paste-the-wall line falls again, to about 2–4 rolls. Those litres are Bartoline’s, not a water volume for every brand. Eight rolls of heavy embossed vinyl do not fit one thin mix. Solvite Thrift is £4.50 for a stated 4.5 rolls. The Solvite 185 g sachet is £4.79 for a stated 10. Bartoline’s flake is £4.50 for a stated 10. The 151 powder is £3.49 and stops at 5 rolls. The repair tube at £6.21 for 56 g is seams and lifted edges.

The wall under the paper

A correct sachet still fails on a wall that is not ready. New plaster is thirsty. Which? describes sizing it with diluted paste and letting that size dry, so the first length does not lose its water into the wall. Neat PVA is not the default size here. A skin of neat PVA can leave a surface the next paste does not key to. If you size, use the dilution on the packet. Mould is a reason to leave the basket. GOV.UK treats peeling wallpaper as a possible sign of damp. If mould covers more than about a square metre, or someone has mould-triggered asthma, or the plaster is soft, get the damp looked at before you paper over it.

What to do with the Amazon shortlist

For a normal paste-the-paper room, the 10-roll powders are the Solvite 185 g at £4.79 (4.7 from 21,073 reviews) and the Bartoline flake at £4.50 (4.6 from 295). The twin pack at £8.14 repeats the 21,073-review count of the single sachet. That is not a second sample. Ready-mixed paste skips the bucket and costs more. The Sophie Laurence 5 kg tub is £15.31 and states no roll count. Solvite’s pink paste-the-wall tub is £26.00 for 4.5 kg and a claim of up to 5 rolls. Format and storage are on ready mixed wallpaper paste. Full cure time of 2 minutes on the 185 g Solvite is the mix-ready claim, not a dried bond. Re-check the live price. These figures move.

Common questions

What wallpaper paste do I need for vinyl?
Use the instruction on that vinyl, then a paste whose packet names vinyl or washable paper. Paste-the-paper vinyl is pasted on the back and booked. Paste-the-wall vinyl is hung dry onto the wall. Bartoline’s guide, marked as a guide only, shows heavy embossed paper using a thicker mix and about 3–4 rolls from a 10-roll sachet, not 8–10. A title that says 10 rolls does not measure your vinyl.
Is a 10-roll sachet enough for one bedroom?
It can be, for ordinary paper, if the room is about eight to ten standard rolls and you do not mix too thick. Bartoline’s sheet puts a 10-roll sachet at about 8–10 rolls of normal paper and about 3–4 of heavy embossed paper. A bedroom of blown vinyl is often a second sachet. Count the rolls, then read the heavy line, not the largest number in the title.
Do I size new plaster with paste or with PVA?
Size thirsty new plaster with diluted wallpaper paste, as Which? describes, and let that size dry before you hang. The dilution belongs on the paste packet. Neat PVA is not the default here. A neat coat can leave a skin that the next paste does not key to, and it is a different product from the adhesive you are about to buy.
Does all-purpose paste cover paste-the-wall paper?
Only when the wallpaper and the paste packet both say so. The Solvite 185 g Amazon bullet mentions most paste-the-wall wallpapers, while Wickes files that format as paste the paper. If your roll says paste the wall and names a ready-mixed adhesive, a powder sachet is the wrong default even if all-purpose is on the front.
Is a fungicide the same as treating mould?
No. A fungicide in wallpaper adhesive is a film preservative, product type 7 under the biocide rules the Health and Safety Executive sets out. It protects the adhesive while it dries. It does not dry a wet wall or remove mould. GOV.UK treats peeling paper as a possible damp sign. Paper over a mouldy wall and you have sealed the symptom in.
