Modelling paste buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have typed structural paste, modelling paste, and texture paste into amazon.co.uk and the results look like one product at several prices. They are not. This modelling paste buying guide puts the body first, then the support, then the volume, and only then the shelf price. The nine listings stay on our [Structural paste](/hub/painting-supplies/structural-paste) comparison. Who each tub is for is on the [best modelling paste](/hub/painting-supplies/structural-paste/sub/structural-paste-best) page. Peter F. compared the amazon.co.uk extracts on 16 October 2026. Four pastes hiding in one search

A title that says texture can be any of four bodies in this set. Smooth opaque white is the usual artist tub: Mont Marte at 500 ml, Nicpro at 571 ml, and Vigorder, whose title says 850 g while the volume field says 600 ml and the weight field says 800 g. In this folder only Liquitex model 8916, 473 ml, says it dries to a hard yet flexible film. Coarse sand is Kreul Solo Goya, 250 ml, and it dries white and matt. Metallic gold is Marabu, 100 ml, for stencils, not a smaller white tub. Liquitex Basics at £9.35 is limited to non-flexible supports and is not ASIN B001URWM12.

Support, colour, and water lines

Canvas and board are the usual artist job. A wall is in scope only when that listing names walls, and even then it is not a decorating specification for a rented room or a wet room. Walls appear on Kamenskaya model 4745091131610, beside canvas, paper, and wood, while the usage field still says indoor. A hard paste written for a board can be the wrong buy for a stretched canvas. That limit is on the modelling paste on canvas page. White paste lightens acrylic if you mix it in. Paint over it when the film is dry through if the colour must stay true. Nicpro's field says not water resistant. Model 4745091131610 prints both waterproof and not water resistant. Leave both lines standing when they clash.

How much tub you are actually buying

Volume is the next cut, and a low shelf price can be the smallest tin. Marabu at £10.30 is 100 ml of gold, not a canvas tub. Mont Marte is 500 ml at £13.05, both Kamenskaya jars are £21.99, Liquitex is 473 ml at £21.20, and Nicpro is 571 ml at £16.99. Kreul is 250 ml at £16.86. Where the volume is one figure, a rule of thumb is about £2.61 per 100 ml for Mont Marte and about £4.48 per 100 ml for Liquitex. That is arithmetic, not a quality score. Vigorder's 850 g, 800 g, and 600 ml stay unresolved. RICH prints 3.5 kg, 3,500 ml, and 400 ml. Do not divide £41.95 by a litre.

What the label is allowed to mean

Star lines do not measure viscosity. Mont Marte is 4.6 from 1,159 reviews, and UK texts still disagree on peaks. Vigorder is 5.0 from one review. Marabu is 4.8 from six, none labelled United Kingdom. A higher star line is not a thicker paste. Liquitex's amazon bullet cites ASTM D4236 and says non-toxic. Liquitex UK's flexible page says the paste contains MBIT and may produce an allergic reaction. GB CLP means a hazardous mixture is labelled before sale in Great Britain. Northern Ireland follows EU CLP. None of the nine extracts states a VOC number. Consumer Rights Act 2015 section 9 is the hook if a lid arrives broken or a jar arrives already opened.

Common questions

Is structural paste the same as modelling paste?
On amazon.co.uk the search words overlap, and UK shops also say texture paste. In this set they are not one body. You can be looking at smooth white, flexible white, coarse sand, or metallic gold. Structural paste here means the thick acrylic medium you knife on for relief, not wall filler and not a clear gel. Read the body line before you compare the price.
When do I buy coarse sand instead of a smooth white tub?
Buy Kreul Solo Goya, 250 ml at £16.86, when you want a sand-like surface that dries white and matt. The listing says you can dye it with acrylic and paint over it with acrylic or oil, and the dry-time field says 6 hours. It is the wrong tin if you want a smooth peak. One German text says grains can fall off when you paint over them, and that text is not a UK review.
Is Marabu gold a small version of the white pastes?
No. It is 100 ml of metallic gold at £10.30, for stencils and effect work on stretcher frames, wood, MDF, paper, and metal. The low shelf price is the gold effect, not a cheaper 500 ml white tub. The star line is 4.8 from six reviews, and the written text in the extract is from Germany.
Which listing actually says flexible?
Liquitex model 8916, 473 ml at £21.20, says the film is hard yet flexible and dries more slowly than other modelling pastes. Liquitex Basics, at £9.35 on the maker's UK page, is a different paste and is limited to non-flexible supports. It is not in these nine rows. A bullet that only says crack resistant is not the same sentence.
Why are there two Kamenskaya jars at £21.99?
They are different model numbers at the same shelf price and the same stated 500 ml. Dense white is model 4745091131498 at 499 g. The other is model 4745091131610 at 721 g, with walls named and with waterproof lines that contradict each other. Do not average the weights or treat them as a duplicate listing.
Can I use any of these as wall filler?
Only one listing names walls, and its usage field still says indoor. That is not a specification for a rented wall, a ceiling, or a wet room. Structural timber needs a wood-repair product. A decorator owns those jobs. These tubs are artist pastes for relief, not a bag of filler.
