Feature wall wallpaper, non-woven: one wall's roll count

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have measured the chimney breast, or the wall behind the sofa, and a square-metre sum says two rolls will do, which is how a first accent wall runs short on the last drop or a thin roll lets a crack show. Feature wall wallpaper, non-woven, needs a drop count and a match before you order. Prices in GBP, captured in October 2026, are on the [non-woven wallpaper comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/non-woven-wallpaper). Peter F. used those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK calculators, not a hanging trial. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Count drops, not square metres

A published rule of thumb, not a survey of your room, takes a wall 3.6 m wide and 2.4 m high and a roll 0.53 m wide. Divide 3.6 by 0.53 and you get just under 6.8 widths, so you cut seven drops of about 2.5 m. Seven drops are 17.5 m, and two 10.05 m rolls give 20.1 m, enough for a free match. 3.6 m by 2.4 m is 8.64 m², so two rolls of about 5.33 m² look ample. Wallpaper Sales, on a 4 m by 2.4 m wall, get two rolls when the paper is plain and three once a 64 cm repeat is in play. Room-wide checks sit on the non-woven wallpaper buying guide.

What the match does to the spare

A free match lets the next drop start almost anywhere, so the 2.6 m left on two 10.05 m rolls is real spare, if the insert agrees. A straight match lines the motif up at one height. With a 64 cm repeat, the offcut is often too short to use. Wallpaper Sales' 4 m wall is the concrete case: two plain rolls became three once the repeat was 64 cm. Do not copy a 53 cm straight-match table onto a 64 cm roll. An offset wastes more. A 64/32 cm marking is a 64 cm repeat with the next drop shifted by 32 cm. On the 3.6 m example that spare can vanish, and the seventh drop comes off a third roll. Two 9.5 m rolls give only 19.0 m, or 1.5 m of spare before any repeat. Order the extra roll from the same batch before you cut.

A thin roll on a marked wall

UK buyers of the Warmiehomy flocking dark grey, the 9.5 m roll at about £15.99, call the paper wafer thin and see-through, and one text mentions a paid return of about £10. That is a review pattern, not a measured thickness. The Sophie Laurence cream beige, about £13.99, splits the other way, and the title never says non-woven. Its cover lines disagree, so do not hang to a unit count of 1.0 m². Arthouse suggests lining paper when the wallpaper is thin or the wall has been patched. Lining will not make blown skim sound. If the plaster moves, or the wall is damp, stop. A stairwell, a first drop match around a bay, and a rented room where stripping is limited are jobs for a professional.

Which roll in this set suits one wall

On flat plaster, the safer count is a 10.05 m roll whose match keeps the spare. A.S. Création Trendwall 2 black, about £21.37, is vinyl fleece, paste the wall, with free match in the bullets and Drop Match in the details. Read the insert before you stop at two rolls. If the insert is a drop match, order a third roll. Who each roll is for, beyond one wall, is on best non-woven wallpaper. Livingwalls Metropolitan Stories 2, about £24.28, is the 64/32 cm offset. Livingwalls Travel Styles, about £24.30, is the 64 cm straight match. Leave the Warmiehomy on a filled or strongly coloured wall.

Common questions

How many rolls do I need for one feature wall?
On a rule-of-thumb wall 3.6 m by 2.4 m, with rolls 0.53 m wide, you cut seven drops of about 2.5 m, or 17.5 m. Two 10.05 m rolls give 20.1 m, enough for a free match. A 64 cm repeat can push a similar wall to three rolls. Measure your own wall, round up, and buy the spare from the same batch before you cut.
What does a 64/32 cm offset do to the spare length?
A 64/32 cm offset is a 64 cm repeat with the next drop shifted by 32 cm, so each length starts at a different height. On the 3.6 m example, two 10.05 m rolls leave about 2.6 m after seven drops of 2.5 m. Those shifts can use that spare up, and the last drop then needs a third roll from the same batch.
Is a 9.5 m roll enough where a 10.05 m roll would be?
Two 9.5 m rolls give 19.0 m. Seven drops at 2.5 m need 17.5 m, so a free match has 1.5 m of spare before a bad cut. Two 10.05 m rolls leave 2.6 m on the same drops. The Warmiehomy flocking dark grey, about £15.99, is this set's 9.5 m roll, and UK texts also call it thin.
Will a thin non-woven hide cracks?
A thin non-woven will not hide cracks or a strong previous colour. UK texts on the Warmiehomy, about £15.99, say the paper can show the wall and sometimes transfer ink. Sophie Laurence texts, about £13.99, disagree about thickness, and that title never says non-woven. The split is a reason to be unsure. Leave blown or damp plaster to a plasterer before you hang.
Should I line the wall first?
Line the wall when the paper is thin or the plaster is patched, and buy lining paper as its own product. It is not in this comparison. Lining adds a paste and a drying time, and it will not fix blown skim. On sound plaster and a heavier 10.05 m fleece, a first feature wall often goes up without it.
