How much wallpaper paste do I need?

Updated: 17 October 2026

You are counting rolls, and the paste shelf answers with up to 5 or up to 10. Those lines are the maker’s ceiling for a straightforward hang, not a promise that embossed non-woven will stop at the same number. How much wallpaper paste you need is that ceiling, minus a margin for a heavy coat, pattern waste, and paste you wipe off the skirting. This page uses the figures on the amazon.co.uk packs dated 16 October 2026. It does not crown a brand. The product table is the [non-woven wallpaper paste comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/non-woven-wallpaper-paste). Read up to as a ceiling

Solvite Paste the Wall 230 g, about £7.28, says up to 5 rolls. The 474 g pack, about £11.00, says up to 10 rolls. Home Care Essentials prints a tighter band for a 230 g flake pack: 6 litres of water covering about 3 to 5 rolls. The bottom of that band is the planning number when you do not yet know how heavily you will coat the wall. B&Q shows the same 5-roll and 10-roll split at shop prices. Budget the amazon.co.uk figure if that is where you are buying. UK reviews on the 230 g listing include paste left after three or four lightweight rolls. That does not mean the next, heavier paper will finish with the same spare.

Square metres on Metylan and ROMAN

Some packs print square metres, which helps when your wallpaper label does too. Metylan 180 g, about £17.16, says up to 6 rolls or 29 m². Metylan 360 g, about £14.06, says up to 12 rolls or 58 m². Use those pairs as the maker’s own equivalents. Do not invent a roll width the packet does not print. The Metylan packs only help when the insert you receive is in English. ROMAN ECO-888 states about 8 square metres per litre on a 3.78 litre pail, about £21.00. Multiplying those figures gives about 30 square metres. That is arithmetic, not a line on the label, and not a count of rolls.

What uses more paste

Embossed, blown, and heavily textured non-woven take more paste than a smooth fleece. Bartoline’s Easipaste page, a different product, says 1 kg hangs about one standard roll, or about half a roll if the paper is embossed. A heavy relief can double the paste a smooth roll would have used. A Solvite all-purpose table, not the paste-the-wall sachet, puts embossed paper at about 4 to 6 rolls where a normal paper is quoted much higher. A thick coat does the same as a hungry paper. Paste you wipe off the face has left the wall. Milton and King say to prime absorbent walls before their non-wovens go up. Extra paste is a poor substitute for a primer.

How many packs to order

Count your rolls from the wallpaper label, including the pattern waste that label tells you to add. A small room clearly under the Solvite 230 g ceiling of 5, with light non-woven, is a one-sachet job for many UK reviewers who still had paste left. Order a second sachet when your count is 5, when the paper is embossed, or when you may remix after lumps. Two 230 g packs are about £14.56, close to one Metylan 360 g at about £14.06, which only wins if the insert is in English. A room heading for 8 to 10 rolls sits on the 474 g claim of up to 10, at about £11.00. Keep a 230 g in reserve if the paper is textured. Do not order ten sachets because a pieces cell says 10. The checks before you buy are on the buying guide. Hang to the packet’s own water on the how to use page.

Common questions

How many rolls does one Solvite paste-the-wall sachet hang?
The 230 g listing says up to 5 rolls, at about £7.28. Home Care Essentials narrows a 230 g flake pack to about 3 to 5 rolls from 6 litres of water. UK reviews include leftover paste after three or four lightweight rolls, so a light non-woven in a small room often finishes inside the claim. Embossed paper can finish under it.
Is up to 10 rolls ten sachets?
No. On the Solvite 474 g listing the pieces cell says 10, and a UK review says that means coverage for about 10 rolls. The same review says the order arrived as two packs, not ten sachets. Another review says the boxes contained ordinary paste for the paper and were returned. Read the carton.
What is 29 m² in rolls?
It is Metylan’s own pairing: the 180 g pack says up to 6 rolls or 29 m², and the 360 g pack says up to 12 rolls or 58 m². Use that pair if you want a roll translation from the maker.
Do I need more paste for embossed non-woven?
Yes, plan on more than the top of the up-to range. Bartoline says its Easipaste covers about one standard roll per kilogram, and about half a roll when the paper is embossed. That is a ready-mixed product, and the half-roll line is the useful part.
How much ready-mixed paste for one feature wall?
A light feature wall of one or two rolls sits inside SupaDec’s claim of up to 3 rolls from 2.5 kg, at about £19.99, and inside a Solvite 5-roll sachet that will leave you with mixed paste you may not keep. Bartoline’s 1 kg per standard roll, or 2 kg per embossed roll, is a way to see that a small tub can still run out on a heavy chimney breast.
Should I buy a second sachet before I start?
Buy the second one when your roll count is close to the ceiling, when the paper is embossed or heavily textured, or when this is your first hang and you may remix after lumps. A room clearly under 5 light rolls can start on one Solvite 230 g sachet, which is what reviewers with leftover paste effectively did.
