Paste the wall adhesive: what to check before you buy

Updated: 17 October 2026

You have the non-woven rolls, and the paste still has to match them. Paste the wall adhesive is the sort you brush or roll onto the wall, then hang the length dry, with no pasting table and no soak. A packet that only says wallpaper paste can be the older system, mixed for the back of the paper. This page is the order of checks: the words on the label, powder or a tub, then an English mix table and a box that matches the title. The product table is on the [non-woven wallpaper paste comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/non-woven-wallpaper-paste). Shelf prices are amazon.co.uk figures from 16 October 2026. Match the backing before the brand

Start with the wallpaper slip, then the paste packet. Both should say non-woven or paste-the-wall. Clay paste, wheat paste, and a general powder for pulp papers are a different system, and a high star rating does not repair that mismatch. Totty Lowther’s hanging notes describe paste on the wall, one length at a time. That sheet does not compare the amazon.co.uk sachets, so treat it as a method note, not a shopping list. The words you need are on the packet, not only in the search title. A.S. Création’s 200 g title says non-woven paste, though the UK listing title is German and a spec cell says glass, which does not match. If the wallpaper maker names a specialist adhesive, follow that slip. The powder or ready-mixed page takes the next split.

Powder sachet or ready-mixed tub

Treat format as a check, not a verdict. A powder sachet is the cheaper route per claimed roll in this amazon.co.uk extract. A ready-mixed tub removes that ratio and, here, costs more for a smaller stated cover. Solvite’s 230 g sachet is about £7.28 for a stated ceiling of 5 rolls. SupaDec’s ready-mixed 2.5 kg tub is about £19.99 for a stated ceiling of 3 rolls, with 5.0 from two ratings and no review text. ROMAN ECO-888 is about £21.00 for 3.78 litres, and the review texts are from the United States and Canada. B&Q lists Solvite Paste the Wall 470 g, model 1584714, at £10.40, the same model number as the 474 g amazon.co.uk listing at about £11.00. A tub is the sensible check when you will not measure water. A sachet is the sensible check when you can read an English table. The best non-woven wallpaper paste page names one starter pack under those conditions.

Instructions, fungicide, and a box that matches

You need a mix table you can follow in English. Guessing the water is how a mix goes thin and a length drops. The first 50 review texts on both Solvite paste-the-wall listings are labelled United Kingdom. Metylan 180 g shows 4.7 from 4,610 reviews at about £17.16, and only four of the first 50 texts are from the United Kingdom. Two of those four say the instructions were not in English, and one says the mix was too thin the first time. On Metylan 360 g the only UK text in the first 50 says the pack was binned for lack of English instructions. Fungicide is a label line, not a cure for a damp wall. Do not paper over mould. A fungicidal wash with an approval number comes first.

A short checklist

Read the wallpaper slip and keep only a packet that says non-woven or paste-the-wall. Confirm you can mix from an English table, including the litres, and reject a German insert if you cannot read it. Choose a sachet when you will measure water, or a tub when you will not. Treat up to 5 or up to 10 as the maker’s ceiling, and buy a spare if the paper is heavily embossed. Check the carton is the paste-the-wall variant named in the title. If the slip names a specialist tub, or the wall is damp, stop and use the maker’s instruction or a decorator. The hanging steps are on the how to use non-woven wallpaper paste page.

Common questions

Is paste-the-wall adhesive different from all-purpose paste?
Yes, when the packet is honest about the backing. Paste-the-wall adhesive is for non-woven and similar coverings that you hang dry onto paste on the wall. All-purpose paste is often mixed for paper you paste on the back and soak. Solvite’s paste-the-wall listings in this set name that method. A star rating on a general paste does not make it the same product.
Does the packet have to say non-woven?
It should say non-woven or paste-the-wall, in words you can check against the wallpaper label. Wallpaper paste on its own is too wide. In this extract, Metylan and Solvite name non-woven on the bullets. A.S. Création’s title does too, while a spec cell says glass, so you would confirm the pack in your hand. ROMAN ECO-888 names non-woven and paste-the-wall among other types. It is not a non-woven-only tub.
What if the instructions are only in German?
Do not guess the water. UK texts on Metylan 180 g and 360 g in this extract complain that the instructions were not in English, and one buyer binned the 360 g pack for that reason. A thin mix is the failure those reviews describe.
Does a fungicide mean I can paper a damp wall?
No. A fungicide line, such as Dunelm’s note that Solvite includes one during drying, is not a treatment for mould or a wet wall. Do not hang on damp plaster or over mould. Wash a small patch with a fungicidal product that carries an approval number, let the wall dry, and call a decorator if the plaster is blown or the mould is more than that patch.
How do I spot a listing that might not be paste-the-wall?
Read the title, the first bullet, and the box you receive, and treat a mismatch as a return. On the Solvite 474 g listing, one UK review says the boxes contained ordinary paste for the paper. The same listing’s pieces cell says 10, which a reviewer read as a coverage claim, not ten sachets.
Should I trust the star rating if the reviews are not from the UK?
Use the stars as a count, and use the country label as a separate check. Metylan 180 g is 4.7 from 4,610 reviews, and only four of the first 50 texts are from the United Kingdom. ROMAN’s 4.7 from 359 has no UK text in the extract. Solvite’s first 50 texts on both kept listings are United Kingdom.
