Mortar pointing gun: what to check before you buy

Updated: October 2026

You have a door-frame gap or a patio that has lost its joints, and amazon.co.uk is showing a mortar pointing gun from about £15 to £29. The titles look alike. A hand ratchet pushes a plunger down a tube. A drill hopper needs a drill you already own. A short run of brick may still want a hawk and a pointing iron. This page is the trade-off for the six listings in our [mortar syringe comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/mortar-syringe). The named default sits on the [best mortar gun](/hub/painting-supplies/mortar-syringe/sub/mortar-syringe-best) page. Prices and star lines are amazon.co.uk figures from 15 October 2026. Products Compared read those listings and the maker pages, and ran no laboratory test on these guns.

Three tools, and the job in front of you

Most of this set is a hand pointing gun. You fill a barrel, a rubber plunger seals it, and a ratchet drives the plunger so the mix leaves through a nozzle. A technical row that says AC/DC is listing text beside a hand tube. The DYOUen at £19.99 is the exception. The title says electric and the specification says hand powered. Reviews describe bolting on a drill the listing does not include. Treat it as a hopper for a long plain joint, and only after a patch test. The third choice is to leave the gun alone. LABC says a gun helps on large areas of simple joints, and that bead or tuck pointing may need a trained bricklayer. That choice is set out on mortar gun or pointing trowel.

Seal, nozzle, thrust and the fields that disagree

A rubber plunger you can tighten matters more than the word stainless. Faithfull’s page for FAIPOINTING states 12:1. Roughneck’s page for the Ultimate 32-150 states 16:1, and only those amazon.co.uk bullets print the ratio. A higher ratio reduces the effort on the trigger. The same reviews still describe a jam when sharp sand lets the plunger squeeze water out. A grout tip is a different opening from a pointing tip. Faithfull’s sheet says mortar is unsuitable in the grout nozzle unless that nozzle is cut to its largest size. One HISUEKIG review, on a file of four, says there is no nozzle to get in between bricks. Amazon’s material line on the Faithfull kit says Cement. Faithfull describes replaceable rainwater-pipe barrels and lists the kit at £41.62 including VAT, against the Amazon shelf of £23.25. When two lines conflict, keep both.

How the six listings split on price and evidence

On 15 October 2026 the star line did not rise with the price. About £15 to £20 holds the Hilka at £14.99, 3.5 from 163 reviews, and the DYOUen at £19.99, 3.3 from 27. Repeated faults are a plastic plunger that snaps and mix passing the seal. About £23 to £26 holds the Faithfull at £23.25, 3.7 from 783, and HISUEKIG B0GS4N4HQM at £25.99, 3.0 from 9. About £28 to £29 holds HISUEKIG B0GS53Y6DF at £27.99, 3.2 from 4, and the Roughneck at £28.57, 4.2 from 1,774. The listing says 1 litre. The maker’s page for the same 32-150 says 750 ml. Both figures stay in view.

Where the purchase should stop

Soft historic masonry and a cement-rich gun mix are a poor pair. The Brick Development Association notes that M12, M6 and M4 mortars are not generally suitable for old masonry built in lime, and points to BS 8221. Ty Mawr, on 8 April 2024, places its lime mortars in an auger or forced-action machine. The full argument is on lime mortar and a pointing gun. Raking is the dusty part. HSE says uncontrolled chasing and raking can peak around 5 mg/m³, against a workplace exposure limit of 0.1 mg/m³ for respirable crystalline silica over eight hours. Call a bricklayer for cracks or bulging over openings, work at height, or bead and tuck profiles. Common questions

What does a thrust ratio mean under £30?
A thrust ratio is how the ratchet multiplies the force you put on the trigger. Faithfull publishes 12:1 for FAIPOINTING on its own page. Roughneck publishes 16:1 for the Ultimate, and the amazon.co.uk bullets repeat 16:1. Hilka and the HISUEKIG guns state no ratio in this capture. The ratio still leaves a coarse-sand mix stuck in the tube.
Is a stainless tube better than an aluminium one?
Stainless is a material line on the two HISUEKIG guns, at £25.99 with 9 reviews and £27.99 with 4. The aluminium Hilka, Faithfull and Roughneck guns have 163, 783 and 1,774 reviews. A stainless headline says nothing about whether the plunger seals. Amazon’s Cement material field on the Faithfull page is a listing line beside the maker’s downpipe barrels.
Why does the Faithfull page say the material is cement?
The amazon.co.uk technical field says Cement. Faithfull’s product page describes a pointing kit with replaceable rainwater-pipe barrels, a 12:1 ratio, and a list price of £41.62 including VAT. The Amazon shelf in this capture is £23.25, with 3.7 from 783 reviews. Use the maker’s page for the barrel and Amazon for the price and the star line.
Is a drill hopper the same product as a ratchet gun?
A ratchet gun is a tube and a plunger you drive by hand. The DYOUen listing is a metal body with four nozzles at £19.99, a title that says electric, and a spec row that says hand powered. Reviews fit a drill the buyer already owns. At 1.41 kg and 3.3 from 27 reviews, it belongs in a different column from the Hilka or the Roughneck.
Which nozzle fits bricks, and which fits a patio?
Brick joints need a tip that enters the gap. Patio slab joints are often wider and can take a broader nozzle. Hilka separates straight, angled and grouting nozzles. Faithfull’s sheet says the small grout nozzle should be cut to its largest mark before mortar goes through it. A review on the £27.99 HISUEKIG says none of the supplied tips would get between bricks.
How many reviews are enough on a 3-star gun?
Nine reviews at 3.0, or four at 3.2, say little about a second season of use. The Faithfull file has 783 ratings and the Roughneck file has 1,774, which is enough for a repeated fault, including leaks, to show up. Stars still leave the working life of the ratchet unmeasured. A handful of ratings is a reason to stay with the longer files in this set.
