Lining paper buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have an amazon.co.uk tab open and a room that needs a base before paint. The title says 20 metres, the colour field says Red, and the stars look fine. This lining paper buying guide is the order of fields to read before you order. The [lining paper comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/lining-paper) holds the five listings kept on 19 October 2026. Peter F. read those pages and the makers' size lines. This is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Start with grade, stated metres and paste.

What to read first

Three fields decide whether the listing is the product you think it is. Grade is a weight band, not grams per square metre. Erfurt's pages do not print gsm, so a higher number means heavier paper for a worse wall. Matching 1000, 1400 or 2000 to the plaster sits on the lining paper grades page. Metres come next, and only the metres printed as the roll, not the parcel. The Erfurt 1400 single (B00HWV7L4I) and the Erfurt 1000 (B00HWV7H88) do not state a roll length. Paste is the third check. These five listings are non-pasted, paste-the-paper. An adhesive line is a method note, not a tub in the box. A review that names the wrong brand or a short roll is more useful than a 4.6 average.

Metres and cover

A normal UK single from Erfurt, for 1000, 1400 and 2000, is about 10 m by 53 cm, about 5.3 m². A double is about 20 m by 53 cm, about 10.6 m². B00HWV7DIM, the 2000 single at about £7.01, prints 56 square feet as cover. That figure is area, not a tape along the roll. B01HR2ZXOG is titled as 20 m and was about £9.25 on 19 October 2026. Lee Faller, on 13 August 2026, wrote that the roll was 10 m. If both the listing and the newest review are silent on metres, treat the length as unknown.

Fields that mislead

Colour Red on B00HWV7DIM is not a red sheet. A colour that says 1000 Grade is the grade in the wrong box. A thickness of 2000 mm on the titled 20 m listing copies the grade into a millimetre line. B094JKS29M is titled as 10 m and a pack of eight, at about £30.10, with a brand field of SOPHIE LAURENCE. The same page gives a unit count of 6.0 square metres and a cover of about 5.32 m² per roll, which is roughly one single, not eight rolls. Reviews say the paper was not Erfurt Red Label. Gail, on 6 June 2023, wrote that the cheaper 2000 single was not Erfurt and nearer 1200 grade. After that date this page does not treat B00HWV7DIM as confirmed Erfurt. Which roll suits which wall is on the best lining paper page.

Checklist before you order

Buy one batch for the room. Erfurt's newer base paper looks like the older one, and the maker says not to mix them on the same job. Paste stays a separate basket line. Skip a price per square metre. Lengths are missing on two singles, and both 2000 captures have a review that the brand or the metres were wrong. Neither about £6.36 nor about £30.10 is a proven cost per square metre. If the plaster is detached, or the wall is damp and you do not know why, stop. Lining paper is not a plaster repair and it is not a waterproof layer. A sound new skim is often sized, mist-coated and painted with no lining at all.

Common questions

Is a higher grade the same as grams per square metre?
No. A higher number means heavier paper for a worse wall. Erfurt's grade pages do not give grams per square metre, so this guide does not convert 1000, 1400 or 2000 into gsm. Which band suits the plaster is a separate decision.
How long is a normal UK single and double?
For Erfurt 1000, 1400 and 2000, a single is about 10 m by 53 cm, about 5.3 m², and a double is about 20 m by 53 cm, about 10.6 m². Grade 800 is 56 cm wide, and that width does not apply here. Two listings state no length, and one titled 20 m has a review that says 10 m, so use the maker size, not every amazon title.
Does non-pasted mean the paste is in the box?
It means the opposite. Non-pasted, paste-the-paper lining is sold without paste. You buy ready-mixed paste separately, which is what Erfurt specifies for 1400 and 2000. An adhesive line on the 20 m listing describes the method. It is not a tub in the parcel. Paste-the-wall paper is a different product and is not in this set of five.
Why does the colour say Red when the paper is plain?
The paper is plain lining, meant to disappear under paint or wallpaper. Red on one 2000 listing is a colour field, not the sheet you will hang. Another listing puts 1000 Grade in that same kind of field. Read the grade from the grade line, and read the brand from the brand line and from reviews, not from a colour chip a wallpaper form was built to hold.
Can you trust a 20 m title if a review says the roll was 10 m?
Treat the review as the more useful fact until you can see the label. B01HR2ZXOG is titled 20 m. Lee Faller wrote on 13 August 2026 that the roll was 10 m. A maker double and a 10 m single cover different amounts of wall, and a 4.6 average does not settle which length is in the box.
