Best lining paper

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to line a sound but cracked plaster wall, and the amazon.co.uk results are highly rated rolls that do not say how many metres you will get. The best lining paper in this set is the single Erfurt 1400, not a 2000 title with a disputed length and not a pack whose brand is in doubt. Prices are from the listings saved on 19 October 2026, checked against Erfurt's grade pages, with no lab test. The full table is in the [lining paper comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/lining-paper). Peter F. checked those listings. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Our top picks

On this page

The top pick for larger cracks

The top pick is the Erfurt 1400 single, B00HWV7L4I, a non-pasted roll at about £6.36, with 4.6 from 971 ratings and rank 12 in Wallpaper. It names neither PVC nor fibreglass. Erfurt's 1400 page is for sound older plaster with larger cracks, and gives a maker size of 10 m by 53 cm. That length is not on the amazon.co.uk listing, so do not plan the room from it. The colour field reads Red, and that is not the paper colour. Leave it if the plaster is holed or blistered. Erfurt points that surface at a fibreliner or an insulating liner. The wider scale is on lining paper grades.

The other clear Erfurt single

The Erfurt 1000 single, B00HWV7H88, carries RL1000S, so this is 1000 grade rather than 1400. It was about £8.37, with 4.3 from 164 ratings. Coverage is only Medium, and no length in metres is stated. Buy it only if you already want 1000 grade and will pay about £2 more than the 1400 while accepting the same gap on metres. It is not the top pick. If a decorator specified 1000 and the cracks are smaller than the 1400 page describes, this is the single to open.

When the eight-roll title makes sense

The eight-roll 1400 title, B094JKS29M, was about £30.10, with 4.6 from 416 ratings. Coverage and the unit count do not agree, and reviews dispute the brand on the roll. The pack only helps if you need several 1400 rolls and you can open the first roll the day it arrives. Read the brand on the wrapper before you paste. Skip it for one wall. What a title ought to state is in the lining paper buying guide.

The two 2000 listings to treat carefully

Two listings sit on 2000 grade. Neither is a proven cheaper area than the about £6.36 1400. There is no best value roll in this set. B01HR2ZXOG, about £9.25, puts 20 metres in the title, and a review says the roll that arrived was 10 metres. B00HWV7DIM, about £7.01, showed 4.5 from 178 ratings. Gail's review of 6 June 2023 says the roll was not Erfurt and nearer 1200 grade, so this page does not treat that capture as confirmed Erfurt after that date. Skip both if you need a named Erfurt roll or a length you can plan from. If the wall is worse than plain 2000 can hide, Erfurt points to a fibreliner or an insulating liner. These rolls are neither.

Common questions

Which lining paper is the top pick, and who is it for?
The top pick is the Erfurt 1400 single, B00HWV7L4I, at about £6.36, with 4.6 from 971 ratings. It suits sound older plaster with larger cracks, before paint or wallpaper. It is the wrong buy if the plaster is holed or blistered, or if the listing must state a length. The maker's 10 m by 53 cm figure is not on this amazon.co.uk listing.
Why is the 1000 single not the pick when it is a clear Erfurt roll?
B00HWV7H88 is a clear Erfurt single, marked RL1000S, at about £8.37 and 4.3 from 164 ratings. It costs more than the 1400, has fewer ratings, states no metres, and only notes coverage as Medium. Choose it if you have been asked for 1000 grade and you accept that limit.
Is the £7.01 2000 single a better buy than the £6.36 1400?
No. B00HWV7DIM is about £7.01 with 4.5 from 178 ratings, so it is neither cheaper nor better supported than the 1400. Gail's review on 6 June 2023 says the roll was not Erfurt and was nearer 1200 grade. Bill Ogden wrote on 3 May 2023 that it contracted and opened seams. A price that close to about £6.36 is not best value when the brand and the joins are in doubt.
Should you trust the £9.25 roll because the title says 20 metres?
Not as a measured length. B01HR2ZXOG is about £9.25 with 20 metres in the title, and a review says the roll that arrived was 10 metres. Do not divide about £9.25 by 20 metres, and do not treat that figure as best value against the about £6.36 1400.
When is the eight-roll 1400 title the one to buy?
B094JKS29M, at about £30.10 and 4.6 from 416 ratings, is worth buying only when you need several 1400 rolls and you can check the brand on the first roll before the rest go up. Coverage and unit count disagree, so it is not eight confirmed Erfurt rolls.
What if the wall is worse than 2000 grade can hide?
Erfurt's 2000 page covers damaged, cracked, holed or blistered plaster, and it still sends the worst texture to a fibreliner or an insulating liner. A heavier plain roll in this set is not that product, and none of these listings is insulation. There is also no 800, 1200, 1700, 2500 or quad here. If the plaster is failing, a higher plain grade will not replace a repair.
