Insulating wallpaper vs wall insulation, in practice

Updated: 21 October 2026

One room in a solid-wall house never quite warms up, and a roll of insulating wallpaper sits next to a quote for internal wall insulation. Insulating wallpaper vs wall insulation is a thin lining on the plaster against boards or a stud wall. They are not two prices for the same result. This page says when the roll is enough and when 2–10 mm is the wrong tool. Prices stay on the [insulating wallpaper comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/insulating-wallpaper). Peter F. wrote this on 20 October 2026 from the Centre for Sustainable Energy, a BEIS report and Historic England. We did not model your house. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission.

Two different jobs

The Centre for Sustainable Energy lists boards, a filled stud frame, a flexible lining, and insulating plaster. The flexible lining is usually no more than about 10 mm, and CSE says it insulates less than boards or studs. A foil barrier is a stain sheet, not that lining. A weekend liner is glue and a blade. Internal wall insulation moves electrics, refits skirtings, and needs a moisture plan. A wall that only feels cold is still a liner, and the types split on the buying guide. This page does not re-rank Heatsaver against Graphite Plus.

Thickness and stated resistance

Heatsaver is 2 mm at 0.05 m²K/W. Graphite Plus is 4 mm at 0.125 m²K/W. The 9 mm peel-and-stick foam states no R-value. CSE’s flexible lining, about 10 mm at most, is the top of this decorating range. A stud wall is several times that depth. BEIS cites a different 10 mm wallpaper at about 0.98 m²K/W and still calls thin methods weak beside polyurethane boards. Those Erfurt figures are not a wall U-value. Two or four millimetres will not stop a sofa fitting. Class E, which Erfurt states for the polystyrene sheets, does not on its own meet the lining classes for new work in Approved Document B.

Cost shape, not a quote

CSE’s planning figure is around £12,000 for internal insulation of an average three-bedroom semi. That is a house-scale average, not your quote. The other shape, on amazon.co.uk on 20 October 2026, runs from about £11.10 for Dampstop to about £21.99 for a 9 mm roll with no area printed. One cold wall might be two or three rolls. It will not do twelve thousand pounds of work. Heatsaver still needs adhesive and a lining paper. A roll sold with a house-sized saving has swapped these two shapes.

Common questions

Is insulating wallpaper the same as internal wall insulation?
No. Insulating wallpaper in this set is a 2 mm, 4 mm, or unrated peel-and-stick sheet glued to the face of the wall. Internal wall insulation, in the Centre for Sustainable Energy’s description, is boards, a stud wall, or a thin flexible lining, and the flexible lining is the weakest of those on purpose. Same room, different thickness, different moisture design.
How thick is a liner next to a stud wall?
Heatsaver is 2 mm and Graphite Plus is 4 mm. CSE puts flexible thermal lining at no more than about 10 mm. A stud lining is a frame plus insulation plus plasterboard, so the room loses the depth of that frame, not a wallpaper’s thickness. The 9 mm foam in this set still has no stated R-value, so it does not close the gap.
When is a liner the sensible stop?
When one dry wall feels cold, you can decorate, and a warmer surface is the result you want. Heatsaver reviews support that touch test. They do not support a heating-bill claim. A liner is also the stop if you will not take on reveals, electrics, and a moisture plan. It is the wrong stop if the brief was a solid-wall retrofit.
Does a listed building change the answer?
It can. Historic England notes that insulating solid walls may need consent, and that the work can cause damp even when it cuts heat loss. A thin lining in an unlisted house is a decorating choice. A listed interior, or anything that changes historic fabric, needs a check with the council or a conservation adviser before you glue or board. Do not assume internal always means permitted.
What should I buy if I only want one cold wall to feel less cold?
A liner, not a stud wall, if the plaster is dry. Graphite Plus if you want the 4 mm sheet and accept no reviews on that listing, Heatsaver if you want the lower price per square metre and will ignore the 200 m² coverage cell. Leave both if the wall is wet. Feeling less cold to the hand is the claim the reviews support. Matching internal wall insulation is the claim they do not.
