Thermal lining paper: type, coverage, and adhesive

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have measured one cold wall, and the amazon.co.uk results mix a 2 mm underliner, a foil barrier and a peel-and-stick foam. Thermal lining paper is the thin sheet hung on the plaster to take the chill off the surface. It is not cavity fill or insulated plasterboard. This page sorts the types, the coverage you can trust, and the adhesive you still buy. Prices sit on the [insulating wallpaper comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/insulating-wallpaper). Peter F. wrote this on 20 October 2026 from those listings and Erfurt’s pages, not from a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

Heatsaver is 2 mm of polystyrene you hang and then cover. Graphite Plus is 4 mm, sold for an uneven wall. Dampstop Thermic is a foil barrier, not a thick foam. Peel-and-stick foam is a facing for a smooth dry wall, and those rolls do not state an R-value. Heatsaver at about £12.99 is an underliner price. Dampstop at about £11.10 is a stated 5 m² of barrier. wishFIRE at about £18.99 is 1.32 m². The 9 mm roll at about £21.99 states no area. Wallrock Thermal Liner is not one of these five listings. A cold dry wall is the underliner or graphite row. A stain after rain belongs on the condensation guide before you paste.

Coverage you can trust

The Heatsaver pack is two rolls, the title says 2 mm by 10 m, and a coverage cell says 200 m². Erfurt’s page gives 10 m by 50 cm, about 5 m² a roll, and an R-value of 0.05 m²K/W. If both match, about £12.99 buys about 10 m². You do not have 200 m². Graphite Plus matches 7.5 m by 0.5 m at about £17.85. Dampstop states 5 m², and a review on 29 September 2026 says the width is 500 mm, not 675 mm. The 9 mm roll states no area. A 4 m by 2.4 m wall is 9.6 m², so two Heatsaver rolls are tight. Which roll we would hand you is on the best insulating wallpaper page.

Adhesive, finish, and fire class

Heatsaver is pasted to the wall, not soaked. Erfurt’s guide is about 1.25 kg of ready-mixed adhesive per roll. High-alkali flake adhesives can delaminate the foam. Erfurt says to hang a lining paper first. Dampstop’s own adhesive is about 1 kg for a 5 m² roll. The foil face will not take ordinary paste. Graphite Plus does not print a hang method. Peel-and-stick needs no paste and does not belong on a damp wall. Both Erfurt sheets are Euroclass E. Where Building Regulations apply, Approved Document B asks for higher lining classes, and class E on its own does not meet them. A flame-resistant bullet is not a class. The sequence is on the how to hang thermal lining paper page.

Which roll fits which job

A cold dry wall can take Heatsaver if you accept the tear risk in 179 reviews at 4.3, or Graphite Plus if you want 4 mm and an R-value of 0.125 m²K/W with no review line on the listing. A local penetrating-damp stain is Dampstop, only with its adhesive and not over a leak. A smooth dry rental patch is wishFIRE. Skip the 9 mm roll until a length is printed.

Common questions

Is 2 mm Heatsaver enough for one cold wall?
It is enough for a decorating job on a cold, dry wall if you line it before paint. It is not enough if you wanted the heat loss of that wall to change in a way you could see on a bill. Buyers in the saved reviews often say the surface feels warmer. They do not report a measured saving. If the wall is wet, 2 mm of polystyrene is the wrong tool whatever the price.
Why does the Amazon coverage say 200 m²?
The coverage field on the Heatsaver listing says 200 square metres. The title says 2 mm by 10 m and the pack contains two rolls. Erfurt’s page for this underliner is about 5 m² a roll. Those cannot all be the area you will hang. Plan on about 5 m² a roll, confirm the width is 50 cm, and treat 200 m² as a broken cell.
Do I need special adhesive as well as the roll?
Yes for the pasted sheets. Heatsaver’s guide is about 1.25 kg of polystyrene-suitable ready-mixed adhesive per roll. Dampstop’s own adhesive is a separate buy, about 1 kg per 5 m² roll. Starch paste is the one buyers and the maker both warn you off. The peel-and-stick foams do not use that tub, and they are a different product.
Should a renter buy peel-and-stick instead?
Only for a smooth, dry wall you are allowed to cover and later uncover. wishFIRE’s listing says to avoid textured plaster and damp. At 1.32 m² it is a patch, not a room. Paste-the-wall liners mark the plaster, which many tenancies do not allow.
What fire class stops a roll being used in a new extension?
Euroclass E, which is what Erfurt states for Heatsaver and Graphite Plus, does not meet the lining classes in Approved Document B where those rules apply to new work. A seller bullet that says flame-resistant does not replace a class. An existing room and a local redecoration is a different question from an extension, a stair, or an escape route. If the work needs approval, ask which lining class the drawings use before you order foam.
