How to use a garden hose spray gun before the frost

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have already clicked a gun onto the hose, and the dial shows more icons than you will use this morning. Learning how to use a garden hose spray gun means a soft spray for plants, a hard spray for dirt, a joint that stays on, and an empty gun before a frost. Peter F. updated this on 21 October 2026 from Hozelock's pattern and storage notes, WaterSafe's hose advice, and the nine amazon.co.uk listings in the [garden hose spray gun comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/garden-hose-spray-gun). There was no watering trial. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. If your water company has a temporary use ban, stop. A trigger does not create an exemption.

Pick the pattern for the job

Hozelock's pattern guide puts jet and centre on cleaning, and cone, fine rose, shower, and an aerated spray on plants, because a hard jet bounces off mulch. Mist is for seedlings if you wave the head above the compost. Flat sits between those for a path or a car panel. If the jet comes out like a mist, which one reviewer reported, trust the water and not the printed label. BBC Gardeners' World's tip is to water the base in the morning or evening and to soak every few days instead of a daily splash.

Fit it so the water stays in the hose

Turn the tap off, seat a rubber washer, then click or thread the gun on until it will not pull off. Open the tap a little and watch the joint before you open it fully. Vintoney reviews include a European quick connector that shot off the hose, and a nozzle that needed an extra washer on a water-stop fitting. Hozelock's Multi Spray FAQ, written for other model numbers, says leaks start with the washer. Draper's title says universal and the thread field says 1/2 inch, so a click that feels wrong is a size clash. If the outside tap has no double check valve, call a plumber. Water Regs UK wants that valve inside the building, for a handheld hose disconnected when idle, on premises built after 1 July 1999.

Start, stop, and do not drown the bed

Point the gun at the soil or the patio before you open the tap, not at a window or your face. Squeeze the trigger, or push the thumb slide on a RAINPOINT or the WASH IT! lance, and set the soft pattern first on plants. A lock helps on a long border, and it is also why water keeps running after you let go. Hozelock's FAQ says to check the lock before you blame the washer. ONEHOSE reviews disagree about whether a constant-on control exists. WaterSafe says you should not leave the hose end in a bucket, a pond, or a drain. If a hosepipe ban covers your postcode, stop. Ofwat says a household ban can bring a fine of up to £1,000.

Drain it before the first frost

None of the nine listings states a frost-proof mark. Hozelock tells you to bring guns indoors because water left inside freezes and expands. A Multi-Jet review describes a seam that splits through a freeze. A Vintoney review describes a zinc body that shattered in the first hard frost. Turn the tap off, release any lock, click through the patterns, disconnect the gun, and tip the inlet downward. If both ends of a Hozelock hose have AquaStops, leave a gun open on one end so the hose can empty. Do not stand on a frozen gun to crack the ice out. If the body is already split, a new washer will not close it. The next gun starts on the garden hose spray gun buying guide.

Common questions

How do I attach the gun so it does not shoot off?
Fit a sound washer, click or tighten the joint, and open the tap only a little while you pull on the gun. If it creeps off, stop. Vintoney reviews include a European connector that left the hose under pressure, and a short nozzle that needed an extra washer on a water-stop fitting. Forcing a cross-threaded plastic collar, which shows up on BBU reviews, makes the next leak worse.
Why is water still running when I have let go?
The lock or the thumb slide is probably still on. Hozelock's FAQ tells you to check the lock before you assume the valve has failed. On a thumb-control gun, slide it back to off. If the trigger itself will not spring closed, Draper reviews describe an internal spring that rusted after about two years. That is a worn gun, not a pattern you can dial away.
How do I drain it before a frost?
Turn the outside tap off, release the lock, click through each pattern, disconnect the gun, and tip the inlet downward. Bring it indoors. Hozelock's maintenance page says residual water freezes and expands in guns and lances. If you use their AquaStop fittings at both ends of the hose, they say to leave a gun open on one end so the hose can drain. Do not leave the gun on the tap just in case.
Can I leave a heavy-duty metal gun outside?
Not on the evidence in this set. The listings do not claim a frost-proof mark. A Vintoney review says the metal body shattered in the first hard frost, and Draper reviews describe a rusted spring and cracked plastic collars after time outside the all-metal story. Weight does not keep water from freezing. Store it with the plastic guns.
Should I use the gun during a hosepipe ban?
No, if the ban covers watering gardens or washing cars, paths, patios, and windows with a hosepipe. Ofwat explains that a temporary use ban can apply to households, with a fine of up to £1,000. A spray gun is still a hosepipe fitting. Thames Water's 12 October 2026 notice shows one company still restricting use. Check your own supplier, because it is not a national rule.
Where do I point the water so it reaches the roots?
Point a soft pattern at the soil around the base of the plant, not at the flowers, and give a soak rather than a daily splash. That is BBC Gardeners' World's guidance, not a test run for this page. Morning or evening reduces what evaporates before it reaches the roots. A jet into the crown of a basket blows compost out, which is the opposite of watering.
