How to use an electric paint sprayer without clogs

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a new HVLP gun and a tin of fence colour or varnish. How to use an electric paint sprayer comes down to the cup supplied with this gun, a cardboard test, and a clean while the film is still wet. Reviews of the Wagner W 100, the Tilswall, and the NEU MASTER trace clogs to thick paint and a late rinse. Which model to buy stays on our [electric paint sprayer comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/electric-paint-spray-gun) and in the [buying guide](/hub/painting-supplies/electric-paint-spray-gun/sub/electric-paint-spray-gun-buying-guide). Peter F. checked Wagner's UK HVLP FAQ and HSE spray-mist notes on 21 October 2026, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Get the paint through the cup first

Stir the tin, strain it, and time the flow in the viscosity cup that came with this gun. The seconds in your manual are the figure that matters. A Coopers sheet and a Fast Mover booklet use different second bands, so neither figure belongs on a Wagner pot. Start undiluted. Wagner's HVLP FAQ says to thin in steps of about 5 percent if the spray stays coarse, and the fence manual leaves many glazes neat, with about 5 to 10 percent thinner only on thicker paints. Use water on a water-based colour and the printed solvent on a solvent varnish. A heavy one-coat colour may still be wrong for this gun, which the fence paint sprayer page checks first.

How to make the pass

A left-to-right pass on a fence panel wants a vertical fan. A pass up a narrow gate stile wants a horizontal fan. The other way lays a pencil stripe, and slowing down to fill it is how a run starts. Trigger just before the edge, keep walking, and release once the nozzle has cleared the far side. Overlap about half the fan. Hold the gun square, at the distance in your manual. A Fast Mover Tools sheet puts the nozzle about 200 to 300 mm off the work, and that gap is for that sheet. Closer lays more paint, so a hesitation sags. Mask the patio, glass, and bare timber first, and keep solvent mist away from any flame.

Clean it before you stop for lunch

Flush the matching thinner while the coating is wet. Unplug, empty the pot, and run water after a water-based colour or the labelled solvent after a solvent varnish until the spray runs clear. Keep the motor body dry. Tilswall's amazon.co.uk listing says to clean within 15 minutes. Reviews of the W 100, the Tilswall, and the NEU MASTER blame a late rinse together with thick paint. Clear a spitting hole with the kit pick, not a nail that can bell the orifice. If a mix that meets the cup time still will not atomise, stop adding thinner.

When this is the wrong job

These guns suit fence colour, stain, and varnish inside the viscosity your manual allows. A two-pack coating that cures with isocyanates needs an extracted booth and air-fed breathing apparatus, which is the Health and Safety Executive position. A kitchen and an open window fall short of that. A water-based colour on an internal door is workable when the label allows spray and the room stays empty until the mist settles. Solvent fog in a hallway is a stop. Standard emulsion is a further limit, because Wagner's fence manual leaves wall paints out. The electric paint sprayer for walls page says when a roller or an airless machine is the better step.

Common questions

How do I use the viscosity cup?
Fill this gun's cup, time the empty, and match that time to your manual. A 25 to 50 second figure on a Coopers sheet stays with that sheet. If the flow is slower than your table, add about 5 percent of the named thinner and time it again. Finish on cardboard, because the stopwatch misses a skin or a lump.
Should I thin paint for a spray gun until it looks like milk?
Keep it thicker than milk unless your cup time says otherwise. Wagner's FAQ starts undiluted and adds about 5 percent if the spray stays coarse. Extra thinner weakens the film. Use water only on a water-based tin, and the printed solvent when the tin says solvent.
How far should the nozzle be from the wood?
Use the distance in your manual, with the gun square and moving. A Fast Mover Tools sheet uses about 200 to 300 mm, for that sheet only. Closer lays a heavier film and can sag if you pause. Further throws coating off as mist. If the fan is too wide, ease the air, shorten the gap a little, and check the card again.
How soon do I have to clean an electric paint sprayer?
Flush as soon as you stop, while the coating is wet. Tilswall's amazon.co.uk listing says within 15 minutes, as their rule of thumb. A lunch break is often long enough for colour to skin in the nozzle. Unplug first, keep the motor body dry, and run the matching thinner through until the spray looks clear.
What do I do if the paint sprayer is sputtering or only blows air?
Sputter usually means thick paint or a blocked nozzle. Air with almost no colour usually means an empty cup, a skinned pickup, or dried film. Strain a fresh mix, clear the hole with the kit pick, and test on card. If it still will not atomise, stop adding thinner.
Can I spray indoors with an electric paint sprayer?
You can spray indoors only when the label allows it, the tin has no isocyanates, and you can clear the mist. Spraying puts more coating in the air than a brush, so open the windows and keep solvents away from flames. Two-pack coatings belong in an extracted booth with a professional. Whole-room emulsion needs a roller or an airless sprayer.
