Electric paint sprayer buying guide: match the tin

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk with a 500 W sprayer beside an 800 W one, and the higher number looks safer. Watts are a weak clue. An electric paint sprayer buying guide starts with the thickness of the tin and the shape of the job. The listings sit in our [electric paint sprayer comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/electric-paint-spray-gun). Peter F. read those amazon.co.uk listings and Wagner's UK HVLP FAQ on 21 October 2026. What actually has to match the paint

The figure that has to match the tin is the viscosity limit in DIN-seconds, the time a coating takes to drain through a standard cup. A higher figure is a thicker liquid. The Wagner W 100 is the fine example: 90 DIN-sec and an 800 ml cup, a ceiling for a thinner wood finish. The Wagner Fence & Decking sprayer is the thicker-coating example: 170 DIN-sec and a 1,400 ml container, Wagner's ceiling for a heavier fence coating. Wagner's UK HVLP FAQ says to try the coating undiluted, then thin in steps of about 5 percent, and to follow the data sheet on the tin. The Tilswall listing claims 800 W and 120 DIN/s. Those figures stay listing claims we have not measured. Beside the 170 DIN-sec fence gun, the higher wattage comes with a lower stated thickness limit.

Handheld motor or a turbine on a hose

A handheld gun puts the motor and the cup on your wrist, which suits a gate, a chair, or a shed door. On a run of panels, 800 ml of fence colour is already heavy at arm's length. The Fence & Decking gun's 1,400 ml pot means fewer trips to the tin, though the fuller pot is heavier on the wrist. A split turbine leaves the motor on the ground or on a strap and feeds a lighter gun through a hose. That reach helps only when the length is one you can plan around. The NEU MASTER hose is listed as 2 mm, too small to describe reach, so the hose length on that offer is n/a. If a listing never states a length, treat reach as unknown.

Mains plug, cordless, and a battery that is not in the box

A corded gun for a UK house needs a nominal 230 V motor and a BS 1363 three-pin plug. Regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 requires that plug on domestic electrical equipment supplied with a flexible cable. A 110 V site sprayer stays tied to its transformer. If the photo shows a two-pin plug, or the wording offers only an adapter, wait for a listing that shows a UK plug. A cordless kit is a pack and a charger in the box. Longzhuo and VexNook in this set are sold without a battery. A bare 18 V body for Makita or Bosch packs makes sense only when that pack is already on your shelf. Otherwise the extra pack can cost more than the spray gun.

How the amazon.co.uk prices cluster

Shelf prices in this set cluster under £40, around £50 to £60, and at £99.99. Under £40, read the cup size and the DIN-sec line before you treat the saving as a fence gun. Around £50 to £60, a fine cup gun and a thicker-coating gun can share a price. At £99.99 you pay for stated headroom only when the listing states it. The same 90 DIN-sec ceiling at a higher price is still a fine-finish gun. The best electric paint sprayer page says who each listing is for. Garden panels and decking stay on the fence paint sprayer page.

Common questions

Does a higher wattage spray thicker fence paint?
Higher wattage alone does not spray thicker fence paint. The Wagner Fence & Decking sprayer states 170 DIN-sec at 460 W, while a Tilswall listing claims 800 W and 120 DIN/s, figures we have not measured. Match the DIN-sec line to the fence colour, and treat the wattage as a weak clue.
What does DIN-seconds mean on a spray gun?
DIN-seconds are how long a coating takes to drain through a standard cup, so a higher number is a thicker liquid. On these guns, 90 DIN-sec is the Wagner W 100 ceiling for a thinner wood finish, and 170 DIN-sec is the Fence & Decking ceiling for a heavier fence coating. Test your tin before you commit a whole fence to that limit.
Which nozzle size is for stain, and which is for fence colour?
As a Hosemaster rule of thumb, about 1.0 to 1.4 mm suits thin fluids such as a stain, and about 1.4 to 1.8 mm suits enamels and heavier liquids. A stain in a wide nozzle can run, and a thick fence colour in a fine nozzle can spit. The data sheet on your tin still outranks either band.
What is the difference between a cordless gun and a bare 18 V tool?
A cordless gun that runs on delivery includes the battery and the charger. Longzhuo and VexNook in this set are sold without a battery, so the shelf price is short of a working kit. A bare 18 V Makita or Bosch body helps only when you already own a charged pack. Otherwise the pack can cost more than the gun.
Can I ignore viscosity if the listing says HVLP?
HVLP names the air pattern, high volume at low pressure, and leaves thickness to a DIN-sec figure. The W 100 and the Fence & Decking gun are both in that family, at 90 and 170 DIN-sec. The higher figure is Wagner's ceiling for a heavier fence coating. Try the tin undiluted, then thin in steps of about 5 percent if the data sheet allows it.
