How to light a garden incinerator

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to light a garden incinerator, and the object may be a lidded bin, a painted drum, or a stainless pit whose title says smokeless. This page is how to light a garden incinerator without petrol, and when to leave the lid and the ash alone. Which listing to buy is on the [fire barrel comparison](/hub/outdoor-fire-pits/fire-barrel). Peter F., DIY & tools editor, used these amazon.co.uk listings, Homebase’s incinerator guide, GOV.UK and Defra, checked on 20 October 2026. This is not a lab test. Before the match

Site the container on bare, level ground, and keep water within reach. None of the ten listings prints a clearance. If smoke would cross a road or a neighbour’s windows, wait. GOV.UK does not ban a domestic bonfire, and you stop if the smoke becomes a nuisance. Fuel has to be dry. Defra says dry material smokes less, and that plastics, paint, rubber, treated wood and old decking stay off the fire. What may go in is on burn garden waste in an incinerator. Check a heap with a pole, not a fork, for wildlife, which is the RSPCA’s point. Do not use petrol. Homebase’s order is newspaper, then dry twigs.

Lighting a lidded bin

Start loose, not packed. Crumple newspaper, add dry twigs, and light that through the base holes. Add larger dry branches only once that core is burning, and fit the lid after the fire is going. On the Trendi, Fastcar, Best House and Trendi bundle, the lid is part of the product. Too soon, and you smother the flame. Green cuttings steam and the flame dies. If it stalls, lift the lid with a tool and give it air. Do not add accelerant to a bin that has already been lit. If a leg drops or the base opens, stop. Empty the ash the next day, when the metal is cold.

The first burn of a painted drum

The KetoPlastics drums, at £34.95 and £37.99, claim 210 litres. UK reviews say the paint burns off on the first fires. That smell is the coating leaving the steel, not a reason to add paint or treated timber. Defra lists both among materials not to burn. Light a small dry core, then add fuel only once it is established. A February 2024 update notes base holes on one 210 litre unit. If the base is holed or flexing, stop. Neither listing names a lid.

A smokeless title still smokes at the start

The Onlyfire at £129.99 and the generic 304 pit at £139.99 are wood burners, not waste barrels. UK reviews say they smoke while you light them and smoke less than an open fire once the wood is dry and the pit is hot. That is not no smoke. The limit is on fire barrel vs smokeless fire pit. Use dry split wood and a small kindling core. Damp logs stretch the smoky minutes. Ash pans are for cold ash. Embers in a plastic bucket start a second fire.

When to stop

Stop if smoke crosses a road or blows into a neighbour’s house beyond a short lighting plume. In England and Wales that can be a statutory nuisance. A smoke control area restricts chimney smoke, not a freestanding pit. If the fire leaves the container, call the fire and rescue service. Regular or harmful smoke, once the fire is out, is the council. None of these bins is a Defra-exempt stove. Ash goes into a metal container only when it is cold.

Common questions

How do you light a garden incinerator without petrol?
Use a loose base of newspaper and dry twigs, light it through the holes at the base, and add larger dry branches only after that core is burning. Homebase describes that order. If the flame dies, give it air and smaller dry fuel. Petrol, including on a fire that has stalled, is the wrong shortcut.
Why does a painted drum smell on the first burn?
UK reviews of the KetoPlastics 210 litre drums say the paint burns off on the first fires. The smell is that coating leaving the steel. It is not a reason to add tins of paint or treated timber. If the base is already holed, stop rather than keep feeding the drum.
When is the lid safe to lift?
The lid is safe once the metal is cold, which is after the fire has died and the bin has stood, not while you can still see glow. Fit it once the fire is established. A hot lid on the Trendi, Fastcar or Best House bin will burn a bare hand.
Why is a smokeless pit smoky for the first minutes?
UK reviews of the Onlyfire and the generic 304 pit say the fire smokes while you light it and smokes less than an open fire once the wood is dry and the pit is hot. The title does not remove that first phase. Damp logs make it longer. Green hedge cuttings are the wrong fuel.
When should you put the fire out and call someone?
Call the fire and rescue service if flames or embers leave the container, the base fails, or the bin tips. Call the council when smoke is regular or harmful. A short plume while dry paper catches is the lighting phase. Smoke across a road is the stop.
Can you empty the ash the same evening?
No. Ash in these bins, and in the Onlyfire and generic 304 ash pans, stays put until it is cold, which is not the evening you lit the fire. Embers sit under a grey crust. Wait until the metal is cold, then use a metal container.
