How to choose a fire barrel

Updated: 21 October 2026

You searched for a fire barrel and the results mixed a galvanised bin under £20, a recycled drum, a rust-finish barrel and a stainless pit over £100. Those are different jobs, and a star rating does not travel from one to the next. This page sorts the three objects and the four price bands in this amazon.co.uk set. The ten listings, from £10.99 to £139.99, are on the [fire barrel comparison](/hub/outdoor-fire-pits/fire-barrel). Peter F., DIY & tools editor, read those listings and GOV.UK on 20 October 2026. Three things a fire barrel can be

A fire barrel in this set is a waste bin, an evening barrel, or a double-wall pit. Waste bins run from the Best House at £10.99 to the KetoPlastics drums at £34.95 and £37.99. They take dry garden waste, paper and card. Litres are on burn garden waste in an incinerator. Evening barrels are the Relaxdays rustic at £77.90 and the corten model at £119.90. Neither file contains a UK review. The double-wall pits are the Onlyfire at £129.99 and the generic 304 pit at £139.99. UK reviews say less smoke once hot, and smoke while you light them. That contrast is on fire barrel vs smokeless fire pit.

Four price bands in this set

Entry, £10.99 to £17.85, is a galvanised or plain metal bin with a lid and legs, and a large review file on the Trendi and the Fastcar. UK reviews mention thin sheet and a tired finish after one hot burn. Mid, £34.95 to £37.99, is only the two 210 litre KetoPlastics drums, at 97 × 60 × 100 cm and 57 × 57 × 97 cm. Paint burns off, and no lid is named. If the gate is narrow, use the centimetres. £77.90 to £119.90 buys a corten or rust-brown look. £129.99 to £139.99 buys a 304 pit with an ash pan.

Where the listing contradicts itself

The Trendi title says 90 litres and the technical line says 70 litres, beside 45 × 45 × 70 cm. Tape the centimetres. Treat 90 as a capacity claim the same page also prints as 70. The Best House title says 15 litres, 46 cm high and 26 cm across. The item line says 91 × 46 × 46 cm. The Fastcar says 90 litres and prints no dimensions, at a listed 1 kg. The £37.99 drum’s attribute line says Wood. UK reviews describe drum steel. Do not quote Wood as the body. The Relaxdays titles say corten, while another line says alloy steel or 90% steel and 10% stainless.

What the law does not decide for you

GOV.UK does not ban a domestic bonfire. You must not burn household waste if that pollutes or harms health, and smoke across a road can be an offence under the Highways Act 1980, section 161A, which Defra cites. In England and Wales, harmful or nuisance smoke can be a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, section 79(1)(b). A smoke control area restricts chimney smoke. It is not a ban on a freestanding pit. None of the ten listings prints a clearance in centimetres. Defra’s note says burn dry material, and do not burn plastics, paint, rubber, treated wood or old decking. None of these bins is a Defra-exempt stove.

Common questions

Is a fire barrel the same as a garden incinerator?
In this set, sometimes. The Trendi, Fastcar, Best House and both KetoPlastics drums are garden incinerators for dry waste and paper. The Relaxdays barrels are evening fires, and the Onlyfire and the generic 304 pit are double-wall wood pits. Match the job before you compare the stars.
What size do I need for prunings versus a patio evening?
Prunings point at a 90 litre title or a 210 litre drum, after you check the centimetre line. A patio evening points at the Onlyfire, about 38 cm, the generic pit, or a Relaxdays barrel if you accept a thin review file. A 15 litre bin is for paper, not a hedge.
Why do some listings say 90 litres and 70 litres?
The Trendi title says 90 litres and the technical line says 70 litres, beside 45 × 45 × 70 cm. The page never picks one capacity. Use the centimetres for siting. The Fastcar says 90 litres and prints no dimensions in this file.
Is corten the same as a rust-coloured finish?
Not as a tested fact on these listings. The rustic title says corten, the bullets say a rusty brown look, and the material attribute says alloy steel. The other title says corten, while the technical line says 90% steel and 10% stainless. You are buying the look, not a mill certificate.
Will a smoke control area stop me buying one?
GOV.UK treats smoke control areas as rules for chimney smoke, not as a ban on a freestanding garden pit. Nuisance and smoke across a road still apply wherever you live in the UK. No listing here prints a clearance.
Why is a stainless pit more than £100 when a bin is under £20?
The under-£20 listings are thin galvanised waste bins. The Onlyfire at £129.99 and the generic pit at £139.99 are 304 stainless wood pits with an ash pan, sold for a social fire. UK reviews say less smoke once hot, not no smoke.
Should I trust a 4.4 from thousands of reviews over a 4.7 from 55?
Only inside the same job. The Trendi’s 4.4 from 3,226 reviews is evidence about a galvanised waste bin. The generic pit’s 4.7 from 55 reviews is evidence about a stainless pit. Compare stars after you have chosen waste, an evening barrel or a patio pit.
