Work light for a garage

Updated: 16 October 2026

The ceiling bulb in a single UK garage lights the floor and leaves the wing in your shadow. A work light for a garage, in this set, is a lamp you can aim from above that work, on a normal 13 A socket, with the lead kept out from under the car. This is not a UK-wide league table and not a 110 V site decision. The listings are on the [work light comparison](/hub/occupational-safety/work-light). The Products Compared editorial team used those amazon.co.uk files on 15 October 2026, without a light meter. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A garage fails when the light is on the floor

If the flood sits on the concrete between you and the bonnet, you become the shade. The HSE point applies at home: do not hide a blade in shadow, and do not distort a safety-sign colour. A head at knee height lights your eyes and not the bolt. You want the source higher than the work and off your line of sight. A lumen claim is not a lux reading on your bench. The check you can do is whether a screw head stays visible past your own head.

What this set offers for a socket

Two mains floods fit if the plate matches a 13 A socket. The T-SUN at about £22.34 claims 5400 lumens and 60 W, with a stand and a hook. The specification says 110 V and IP65, a bullet says IP66, and reviews describe a UK plug with the switch a few centimetres away. Read the plate. Do not assume 230 V from those plug comments. The Bellanny at about £42.99 claims 20000 lumens, IP66 and a 3 m lead. The title says 200 W and the specification says 100 W and 220 V. A review describes a UK plug, and another reports flicker on a power tool. A T-SUN review notes PWM, one report rather than a trace. If the lead is the problem, see rechargeable or mains work light.

The tripod in this set is the wrong height chase

The wowspeed at about £64.99 is the tripod here, with a bullet at about 60–150 cm, 30000 lumens claimed, and no voltage in the specification. Two of five UK reviews describe arcing or a buzzing plug. Do not treat that tripod as the height upgrade while those reviews stand. A taller twin sold elsewhere is not this ASIN. Use the T-SUN stand or the Bellanny heads after the plate check. Placement is on how to use a work light safely.

A bar or clamp for the wing, not the bay

Under the bonnet, a bay flood can leave the arch dark. The LETOUR at about £30.99 is a 40 cm bar claiming 4000 lumens, on 4.6 from 759 reviews, with a specification weight of 50 g. One review says the adhesive discs came off. Use the magnet on steel if it holds, and do not hang the bar from a disc. The Coquimbo pair at about £9.98 is the best value for that wing, with no lumen figure and with charge failures in the reviews. The DeWalt is the top pick on stars only with an 18 V pack you own, and the bullets stop at 250–500 lumens, so it is not the first bay flood. Keep the mains lead at the wall. The wider shortlist is the best LED work light page.

Common questions

Is 5400 lumens enough?
5400 lumens is the T-SUN title and light-output field, not lux on your bench. HSG38 puts sheet-metal style detail at 200 lux average and 100 minimum, and this page will not convert one into the other. Enough means you can see the cut without standing in the beam. If the arch is still dark, add a magnetic bar. If the plate does not match the socket, the lumen line does not matter yet.
Where do I put the lead if the car is in the bay?
Run it along the wall to a socket you can reach without crossing the walk, and never under the car. A Bellanny review describes 3 m and a UK plug, which suits a socket on that wall and fails if you must cross to the house. The T-SUN lead length is not in the specification, and the switch may sit by the plug, so leave that end in reach. A battery lamp removes the lead only while it is not charging across the floor.
Will the light strobe my drill?
It might. One Bellanny review reports flicker that strobes a power tool, and a stored T-SUN review notes PWM. If the chuck looks wrong, stop, unplug the lamp, and change the light. Do not keep cutting. Reviews that describe arcing on the wowspeed are a harder stop: leave that lamp unplugged. A spinning tool under a strobe can look slower than it is.
Can I stick a bar to the wing instead?
Yes, as the second lamp, not as the only light for the bay. The LETOUR at about £30.99 claims a magnet and adhesive discs on a 40 cm bar. One review says the discs came off, so try the magnet on the wing and do not hang it from a disc. The Luceco clamp is the alternative on a lip or a bracket, on 55 reviews. The Coquimbo pair is the cheaper magnetic option, with no stated lumen figure.
Should a garage lamp be 110 V?
No. A UK garage socket is 230 V with a BS 1363 plug. The IET treats 110 V centre-tapped-to-earth as site practice, not as a rule for a house. The T-SUN specification says 110 V and reviews describe a UK plug, which you resolve on the plate. It is not a reason to buy a site transformer for a home bay. If the plate and the socket disagree, that lamp is not the one for tonight.
