Bib and brace overalls buying guide

Updated: 16 October 2026

You have a hallway to paint, or a site induction tomorrow, and Amazon UK is mixing navy bibs, yellow tape, and denim. This bib and brace overalls buying guide is the order of questions. Confirm the cut, then whether anyone must see you, then whether you kneel, then the cloth, the leg, and the wash. Price comes last. The [work dungarees comparison](/hub/occupational-safety/work-dungarees) holds the nine listings we kept, from about £12.37 to about £42.40. The Products Compared editorial team wrote this on 15 October 2026 from amazon.co.uk captures and public UK sources. We did not run a lab test. Bib and brace, not a coverall

A work dungaree here is a bib and brace: full-length legs, a front bib, and shoulder straps, with your arms left free. A boiler suit is a sleeved one-piece. UK listings often print overalls on both, so the title has to say bib, brace, or dungarees. If the bullets say jumpsuit, zip coverall, or long sleeve, you have left this category. Two Portwest captures were removed: the S998 long-sleeve coverall and the C813 zip coverall, whose highlight said boiler suit. Lying under a car is that job. Settle the cut on the dungarees versus boiler suit page. Painters stay with a bib for a free arm. Spray paint, or a risk assessment that names a coverall, sits outside a polycotton bib.

Class and colour before pockets

Ask about vehicles and plant before pocket counts. When being seen is the control, the label has to name EN ISO 20471 and a class. Reflective tape on a dark bib is a design detail. Shop against EN ISO 20471:2013+A1:2016, not the older BS EN 471 citation. 3M UK puts class 2 at 0.50 square metres of fluorescent cloth and 0.13 square metres of retroreflective material. Class 3 is higher, and a bib and brace does not meet class 3 on its own. Only the PW344 bullets state EN ISO 20471 and RIS-3279-TOM, with no class number, on a yellow and black ASIN. The TX52 says hi-vis and states no standard. Read both limits on the hi-vis bib and brace page.

Knee pockets are a holder, not a certificate

If you kneel for long periods, EN 14404 type 2 certifies a kneepad and a garment together. Pockets alone meet nothing, and a third-party pad that happens to fit is not that certificate. Match the pad model when the floor can puncture or the site names the standard. The TX12 title states knee-pad pockets and names neither a pad nor EN 14404. The PW344 bullets include a free kneepad set and do not name EN 14404. Portwest's datasheet names type 2 level 0 with kneepad S156 and limits the rail colour to orange. This yellow listing does not copy those lines. One TX12 reviewer shortened the legs and found the pocket on the lower leg. Set the length on the how to wear bib and brace overalls page before you trust the pad.

Cloth, length, straps, then price

A stated blend and a wash temperature beat a stuffed title. The C875, at about £18.99, states 65 percent polyester and 35 percent cotton, five pockets, an elasticated back, and a 60°C wash. The UPF 40+ line is a sun claim, not a hi-vis class. No kept listing states EN 343. Texpel SOS on the PW344 is a stain finish, not a waterproof standard. About £40 is not a higher class.

Common questions

Are dungarees and bib and brace the same garment?
Yes, in the sense this comparison uses. Dungarees are full-length legs, a front bib, and shoulder straps. A boiler suit adds sleeves and closes as one piece. UK shops still print overalls on both, so read the title for a bib or for sleeves before you compare a price. If the shift needs your arms covered, this grid is the wrong place to buy.
Do I need a stated EN ISO 20471 class?
You need a stated class when vehicles, plant, or a site rule make being seen the control. The label should name EN ISO 20471 and the class, not only the words hi-vis. A bedroom or a shed with no traffic can sit on a navy bib with no class. Your employer provides that PPE free when the assessment requires it.
Will knee-pad pockets count as knee protection?
Pockets on their own do not meet EN 14404. Type 2 certifies the pad and the garment as a pair. The TX12 states pockets and does not name a pad or the standard. If the floor can puncture, or the induction names EN 14404, match the pad model on the label before you kneel for a shift.
Is polycotton waterproof?
Polycotton in this set is not sold as waterproof. The C875 states 65 percent polyester and 35 percent cotton and does not claim a waterproof standard. No kept listing states EN 343. A stain-resistant finish, and a review that mentions rain, are not that standard. Buy a garment that states the waterproof standard if you need to stay dry.
Should I size from my jeans waist?
Use the garment's own waist and leg, or its letter chart, and leave room for a base layer. A jeans size is a weak guide on the denim rows, where reviewers say the cut is far smaller than the UK size ordered. On the C875, several reviewers call the sizing true, and the legs are still long.
Is a £19 navy bib a worse buy than a £42 hi-vis title?
Only when you needed a stated class and the navy bib has none. The C875 at about £18.99 states its cloth, pockets, and a 60°C wash, and it states no EN ISO 20471 class. The TX52 at about £39.98 says hi-vis and states no class. For a shed or a workshop, the navy listing is the clearer buy.
