Short sleeve vs long sleeve chef jacket

Updated: October 2026

You are standing on a hot pass in a long sleeve and wanting it off, or you are carrying stock and wanting your forearm covered. Short sleeve vs long sleeve chef jacket is that one decision. Short sleeves are the right call when the job is hygiene cover and the problem is heat. Long sleeves are the right call when a risk assessment needs the forearm protected from hot liquids. Cloth length is not a flame rating, and a mesh panel does not answer the sleeve question. The nine listings this choice has to map onto are in the [Chef's jacket comparison](/hub/occupational-safety/chef-s-jacket). This page is from the Products Compared editorial team, using amazon.co.uk rows captured on 20 October 2026, plus Nisbets, Arun District Council, and retained Regulation 852/2004. We did not splash-test a sleeve. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

When short sleeves are the right call

Choose a short sleeve when you overheat and the written job is clean, suitable clothing rather than forearm PPE. Nisbets puts the trade-off plainly: a shorter sleeve keeps you cooler, and a longer sleeve adds cloth in the heat. On a grill pass or a pasta station that runs hot for hours, bare forearms are how a lot of UK kitchens already work, provided the assessment has not asked for cover. A short sleeve also keeps cuffs out of the food, which is a hygiene point as much as a comfort point. In this capture the short-sleeve titles are the Perkin at £8.31, the Whites Boston B250 at £8.98, the DiULi at £9.99, the Portwest C733 at £17.02, and the Portwest C738 at £20.00. They are not interchangeable. The Boston bullets state 190 g/m² polycotton and stainless steel press studs, in a US size L. The C733 is rank 1 in Chef Jackets and does not state cloth on the amazon page. The C738 puts mesh in the title. The DiULi says lightweight and has UK notes about buttons and sizing up. The Perkin is the lowest price and does not state fibre. Heat relief is the category. The specification is still the listing.

When long sleeves are the right call

Choose a long sleeve when hot liquid on the forearm is the hazard you have assessed. Arun District Council lists long-sleeved chef jackets among catering PPE that can protect arms from splashes of hot liquids, alongside non-slip footwear and, where relevant, gloves, aprons, and eye protection. That sentence is an example of PPE, not a rule that every cook in Britain must wear long sleeves. Retained Regulation (EC) No 852/2004, Annex II, Chapter VIII, requires suitable, clean and, where necessary, protective clothing. It does not name a sleeve length. The official Safer Food, Better Business caterers sheet used here prefers light colours and is wary of external pockets. This edition does not make long sleeves a legal requirement. HSE's L25 guidance is the line that stops the mix-up. Food-hygiene clothing is not PPE when the purpose is hygiene. It becomes PPE when it covers a specific safety risk, such as a scald. For employees, PPE that the assessment requires is the employer's to provide, not a cost the cook is expected to absorb on amazon.co.uk. Long sleeves do not stop a burn from a flame, and they do not stop a spill that soaks through ordinary polycotton. They put a layer of cloth between skin and a splash. None of the listings states EN ISO 11612. If the hazard is flame, this set is the wrong shop.

What this set actually offers

Map the titles before you trust a filter. Short sleeve: Perkin B09DBZ82XN, Whites Boston B01LXRI6TN, DiULi B0FHW86P5W, Portwest C733 B00J4FWHNK, Portwest C738 B07ZHMFPK9. Long sleeve: Fjquamitix B0HGLNH4B6 at £8.99, with 3.5 from two reviews and a date first available of 6 September 2026; Nanxson zip CFM0058 B07XBY4B1D at £14.98; Nanxson stand-collar CFM0057 B07XR6H4M3 at £19.98. Unfixed: Nanxson CFM0001 B073S35NQB at £12.98, whose title says short/long sleeve. The parent title does not tell you which length will arrive. The long-sleeve rows are the weaker files even when the length is what you need. The Fjquamitix reviews disagree, and the fuller one says there are no pockets. The zip coat makes the closure obvious, then sits at rank 175 in Chef Jackets, with most small-size comments outside UK reviews. The stand-collar has a long market life in the file, from 10 September 2019, and UK reviews centre on buttons that open or fall off, plus one note of shrinkage and colour loss. Needing a long sleeve does not make those faults disappear. If the pass is hot and the job is hygiene, buy a short sleeve and then use the best chef jacket page to choose among the short rows. If the assessment is hot-liquid splash on the forearms, buy a long sleeve, and if you are the employer, provide it. The CFM0001 is the row to avoid when you care which length you get.

What a sleeve does not do

A sleeve is a length of cloth. It is not a burn certificate. EN ISO 11612 does not appear on any of these nine listings. A seller's line about extra protection on a double-breasted front is a description of two layers, not a test report. Polyester in a polycotton can melt if the hazard is flame. Cotton-majority cloth is not automatically flame retardant either. If that standard is the requirement, stop and use a supplier who prints it. Mesh is not a sleeve. The C738's Mesh Air Pro title is about underarm airflow on a short sleeve. It does not cover a forearm the short sleeve has already left bare, and it does not turn a short sleeve into forearm PPE. Water-resistant finishes on a manufacturer sheet are about beading, not about a scald. Those limits, and the question of whether 190 g/m² feels cooler, are the chef jacket for a hot kitchen page.

Common questions

Should I buy a short-sleeve or a long-sleeve chef jacket?
Buy short sleeves when the kitchen is hot and the clothing is for hygiene. Buy long sleeves when a risk assessment says your forearms need cover from hot liquids. Nisbets describes the same comfort trade-off. The nine listings here do not include a clearly labelled three-quarter sleeve, so do not expect that compromise from a vague title.
Do long sleeves stop burns?
They put ordinary cloth between your forearm and a splash. They do not stop a flame, and they do not stop liquid that soaks through. No jacket in this set states EN ISO 11612. A double layer on the chest is not the same as a rated sleeve. If the hazard is fire, you need a different garment from a different supplier.
Are long sleeves required in a UK kitchen?
Not as a blanket rule. Regulation 852/2004 requires suitable, clean and, where necessary, protective clothing, and it does not name sleeve length. Arun District Council treats long sleeves as PPE against hot-liquid splashes when that is the risk. HSE L25 says hygiene clothing is not PPE unless it covers a specific safety risk. Your assessment decides, not a product title.
When is the jacket PPE rather than hygiene clothing?
It is hygiene clothing when the point is to keep food clean and to look presentable. It is PPE when it is there to protect you from a specific harm, such as a scald from hot liquid. For employees, required PPE is provided by the employer. Buying your own long sleeve on amazon does not replace that duty if you are the one writing the assessment.
Can I roll long sleeves up on a hot pass?
You can, and Nisbets notes that people do it for comfort. A rolled sleeve is not forearm cover, and it is not the same pattern as a short-sleeve jacket. If you roll them every service, you have chosen the short-sleeve job and you are carrying extra cloth. Buy the length you will actually wear.
Which listings in this set are actually long sleeve?
The Fjquamitix at £8.99, the Nanxson zip CFM0058 at £14.98, and the Nanxson stand-collar CFM0057 at £19.98. The Nanxson CFM0001 at £12.98 says short/long sleeve, so the length is not fixed. The Perkin, Boston, DiULi, C733, and C738 titles in this capture are short sleeve.
