Chef jacket buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are about to order a chef jacket on amazon.co.uk for a first kitchen job, a college practical, or a small team, and the titles disagree about sleeves, studs, and cloth. A chef jacket buying guide is the order of the checks, not a star sort. Decide what the jacket is there to do, then the front and the cloth you can actually read, then the chest in centimetres, and only then the price. Captured shelf prices in this set run from £8.31 to £20.00. A 4.5 from hundreds of reviews does not print a fibre line that the listing left blank. The nine listings are in the [Chef's jacket comparison](/hub/occupational-safety/chef-s-jacket), captured on 20 October 2026. This page is from the Products Compared editorial team. We used the amazon.co.uk rows and public UK guidance, and we did not launder or burn a sample. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the jacket is there to do

Start with the job, because a hygiene coat and a splash cover are not the same purchase. Retained Regulation (EC) No 852/2004, and the GOV.UK staff-hygiene page that points at it, ask for suitable, clean and, where necessary, protective clothing in a food-handling area. They do not name a brand, a sleeve, or the colour white. The Food Standards Agency says the same duty in shorter form. Light colours are guidance because dirt shows. They are not a statute that every jacket must be white. If the jacket is there so food is protected from you, it has to be clean, suitable for the work, and changed often enough that a stained front is not tomorrow's only coat. A rule of thumb, not a study, is two jackets, or three if nothing dries overnight. The spare sits in a routine on the how to wash a chef jacket page. If a risk assessment needs forearm cover from hot liquids, long sleeves can be personal protective equipment, and for employees the employer provides that PPE. HSE's L25 guidance treats food-hygiene clothing as outside the PPE rules when hygiene is the only purpose. Arun District Council gives the other case: a long-sleeved chef jacket against splashes of hot liquids, when that is the risk you have written down.

Front, studs, and cloth you can verify

The front is the next check you can see in a title. A double-breasted jacket crosses a second layer of cloth and, in the catering trade's account, lets you swap a soiled side to the inside. Nisbets describes that pattern as the professional default, with polycotton as the usual easy-care cloth. A zip or a single front uses less cloth and does not cross over. The extra layer is still ordinary polycotton. It is not a certificate. Stainless steel press studs are stated on the Whites Boston B250 bullets, at £8.98, alongside 190 g/m² polycotton. Cheap buttons are the repeated UK complaint on Nanxson jackets and on the DiULi, where one review says the buttons broke off within a day. If the listing only mentions buttons in a review, and not in the title, treat the fastening as unproven until the garment arrives. Prefer a listing that states fibre and grams per square metre. In this capture, the Boston bullets are the line that does that, and they do not state the polyester-to-cotton ratio. A trade page's 80% polyester and 20% cotton figure is not an amazon cell here, so do not import it as the specification. Portwest's own datasheets for the C733 and the C738 describe Kingsmill as 65% polyester and 35% cotton at 190 g, machine washable at 60°C. Those amazon saved listings do not print that fibre line. Read the label in the jacket you receive.

Measure in centimetres

Letter sizes on this amazon set often run small, so a UK high-street M is a poor guess. Measure the fullest part of the chest with your arms down, in centimetres, then match that brand's chart. Nisbets and Instex publish charts for their own blocks. Those numbers do not transfer to Nanxson, DiULi, or Fjquamitix. The Whites Boston title, in this size L capture, prints a chest of 44–46 inch, which is 112–117 cm, and a feedback line says the garment size country is the United States. One UK buyer found that cut generous. That is a usable number if you are buying that large, and it is still a US size country, so do not assume a UK 44 inch means the same block. Nanxson reviews, including an XL that felt between a medium and a large, say the cut runs small. DiULi reviews include advice to go up two sizes. The Fjquamitix file has two reviews, and one of them says about half a size small. The Portwest C733 reviews do not agree with each other: some match the chart, some say size up, some say size down.

What to leave if the listing is silent

Leave a listing that cannot answer the checks you actually need. Missing fibre, missing wash temperature, and a sleeve the title will not fix are three different silences, and each one is a reason to look at the next row. The Nanxson CFM0001 title says short/long sleeve at £12.98, so the parent title does not choose a length. The Fjquamitix at £8.99 has two reviews that disagree about whether the cloth is soft or plasticky. Rank 3, which the DiULi holds in Chef Jackets, is not a cloth specification. Watch the ASIN as well. Where the details ASIN differs from the shopper link, the stars may sit on a parent page. The C733 shopper link is B00J4FWHNK and the details ASIN is B0GHS3ZN26, with a date first available of 20 January 2026 beside 5,530 reviews, so that count may be a parent total. The Boston is the row where both ASINs match. Price comes last. £8.31 is the bottom of this capture and £20.00 is the top, and neither figure repairs a blank fibre line. If the job, the sleeve, the front, the stated cloth, and a centimetre chest all survive, the crown inside this set is the best chef jacket page.

Common questions

What should I check before I buy a chef jacket?
Check the job first, then sleeve, front, a stated fibre and grams per square metre, a chest in centimetres, and the wash the label will allow. Price and stars come after those lines. In this amazon.co.uk set the only bullets that state 190 g/m² polycotton and stainless steel press studs are on the Whites Boston B250. A high review count does not fill a blank cloth field.
Does UK law say the jacket has to be white or double-breasted?
No. GOV.UK and retained Regulation 852/2004 require suitable, clean and, where necessary, protective clothing. They do not require white cloth or a double-breasted front. The Food Standards Agency's Safer Food, Better Business sheets prefer light colours because dirt shows, and they are wary of external pockets. That is guidance for seeing soil, not a colour statute.
Is polycotton better than cotton?
Polycotton is the easy-care default in UK catering trade guides, and it usually washes and dries faster than a cotton-majority cloth. It is not automatically safer. Portwest's Kingsmill sheet is 65% polyester and 35% cotton at 190 g. The Boston amazon bullets say 190 g/m² polycotton and do not state the ratio. If you want a cotton-majority jacket, read a label that says so. Polyester can melt near a flame, and none of these listings is EN ISO 11612.
Why do these amazon jackets run small?
Several letter sizes in this set are not a UK high-street block. Nanxson and DiULi reviews say size up, sometimes by two sizes. The Boston large is printed as 44–46 inch (112–117 cm) with a United States size country. Measure your chest and use that brand's chart. A chart from Chef Works or Instex belongs to those brands, not to a Nanxson letter.
Does a double layer of cloth mean the jacket is flame retardant?
No. A double-breasted front is two layers of the same cloth, and sellers sometimes describe that as cover against scalds or as a way to hide a stain. None of the nine listings states EN ISO 11612. If the hazard is flame, you need a supplier who states that standard. This set does not.
