Moisture meter buying guide: pin or pinless

Updated: October 2026

You are standing in front of a tide mark, a pile of logs, or both, and the amazon.co.uk shelf calls every gadget a moisture meter. A moisture meter buying guide has to pick the sensing method before it picks a brand. Pins push into the material and read resistance. A pinless pad sits on the surface and reads capacitance, so it does not leave holes. Only two of the twelve listings are pinless, and several pin meters never print a building-material scale. The twelve-row table, with shelf prices, stays on the [moisture meter comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/moisture-meter). Products Compared read those amazon.co.uk extracts on 16 October 2026 and did not run a lab test.

Pin or pinless

Start with the surface you are not allowed to mark. A rented wall, fresh paint, a finished floor or a caravan panel is a pad job. In this set that is the Mecurate PDM-01 or the Neoteck NTK179. If you can split a log or you are checking bare timber, a pin is the resistance method that BS EN 13183-2 describes for sawn timber, roughly in a 7% to 30% window once species and temperature are allowed for. A pad on the bark of an unsplit log is the wrong first tool for the core. The best moisture meter page says who each of those shapes is for.

A scale that matches the job

A percent is only useful if the mode is for the material under the sensor. Dryzone prints wood at 6–60% on eight scales and building materials at 0–40%. Neoteck prints wall at 0–20% and masonry at 0–33%, and it calls those relative. Mecurate says building-material percentages are for reference only and cannot be used as exact values. The Property Care Association treats electrical readings in masonry as comparative: salts can raise them, and the meter does not separate rising damp, a leak and condensation. RDINSCOS names a building mode and does not print a numeric building range. How a wall figure fails as a diagnosis is on the damp meter for walls page.

What the £9 to £25 band does not include

Every meter in this set sits between £8.99 and £24.99. A rule of thumb: under about £15 you are looking at a basic pin meter; from about £17 to £25 you are in the band that includes both pinless models and the longer review files. It is not a survey kit. Trade Meters advertises a Protimeter Mini at about £149 before VAT. That meter is outside this comparison. A £20 meter is not evidence for a dispute. The England rule for wood sold as fuel, at 20% or less, belongs on the moisture meter for firewood page. If a qualifying purchase comes through our amazon.co.uk links, we can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Batteries, caps and spare pins

Open the included-components line before you trust the feature bullets. HAVENWARE's technical table says batteries are not required. UK reviews say you need to buy 2×AAA before the DampSense will run. Dryzone, GERUI and VivaStride state that cells are not included. Mecurate's feature text includes 3×AAA, and one review says those cells arrived flat. RDINSCOS includes an extra pair of pins. If the listing contradicts itself on batteries, buy the cells, or pick a listing that states them clearly. Then use the meter the same way twice, which is the how-to, not a second buying essay.

Common questions

Is a wood-only meter any use on plaster?
It can show that one spot conducts differently from another, and it cannot tell you the moisture content of the plaster. Listings in this set that never print a masonry or building range, such as the S8603, are aimed at wood groups. Use a mode the listing names for walls, and still treat the percent as relative. The Property Care Association's point is that salts and the source of the water are outside what the meter can settle.
Why are trade meters so much more than £25?
This set stops at £24.99. A Protimeter Mini is advertised by Trade Meters at about £149 before VAT, and it is not one of the twelve extracts. The extra money, on a survey-oriented meter, is aimed at calibration checks, spare pins and a reading someone will put in a report. A household meter in this band is for your own map of a wall or a log pile. It is not a substitute for that report.
Are batteries included on the cheap meters?
Not as a rule. GERUI at £10.99 and VivaStride at £10.99 state that the cells are not included. The S8603 at £8.99 states 3×AAA in the box. HAVENWARE at £21.99 is the awkward one: the table says batteries are not required, and the reviews say buy 2×AAA. Read the included-components line for the ASIN you are about to order, and assume a clash means you should have cells ready.
Can one meter do firewood and walls?
It can if it has a wood scale and a building, wall or masonry mode, and you accept two different meanings of the number. Dryzone, COCZOW, Neoteck and Mecurate state both kinds of mode, with the wall figure described as relative or reference-only on the pinless pair. A colour cue for burning, on the Valiant, is not the same as a printed building range. One meter does not become a survey, and it does not certify fuel.
What should I ignore in the feature list?
Ignore a 0–99.9% span, a ±0.5% claim, and any accuracy line that the listing attaches only to wood, when you are buying for plaster. Ignore a size or battery line that contradicts another line in the same file. Ignore a single phrase about damp that does not name pin or pinless. The useful lines are the sensor, the named modes, whether cells are in the box, and the review count on amazon.co.uk.
