How to use an inspection camera

Updated: 22 October 2026

The first picture from a new borescope is often soft, washed out, or aimed at the wrong surface. Learning how to use an inspection camera is less about the megapixel line and more about focus distance, LED brightness, and a calm way to push and pull the cable. This guide is for a householder or DIY mechanic about to look into a wall void, a cold engine, or a short dry pipe. It is a procedure, not a price ranking. Specs and picks stay on the [endoscope camera comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/endoscope-camera). The goal is a sharp still of a nearby surface, then a clean withdrawal. Set the phone or the screen up before you are in the loft

Do the setup in a clear room, not balanced on a loft hatch. On a screen camera such as the Qimic, Hopefox G45M, Foxwell, or a Teslong, charge it, fit the card if the kit uses one, and power on until you see a live image. There is no app. Confirm that recording works before you climb, because at least one articulating unit in this set was returned when photo and record failed on arrival. On a phone snake, install the named app while you still have Wi-Fi. On Android, enable OTG if the phone asks. Match the plug. USB-C and Lightning adapters are not interchangeable guesses. The cheapest Hopefox here is Android only. Take a test picture of a printed label. If the app will not install, or the phone warns that it is unsafe, use the return window before the probe is behind plasterboard.

Find the sharp distance and turn the LEDs down

Where a listing states a band, these tips focus only a few centimetres out: roughly 2 cm on one phone kit, 3–8 cm on a Teslong, 4–8 cm on the Qimic. Move the tip toward a matte surface until the middle of the frame sharpens, then hold that distance. A sharp patch with no context is normal. Pinching the phone does not create depth the lens never had. Start with the LEDs low. Full brightness in a white cavity, a shiny engine bay, or a chrome waste blows the picture white. Raise light only until you can see texture. If the title says 1080p and the image is still soft, check distance and glare before you blame the sensor. Save a still when the frame is useful. Keep your hands near the opening so you feel resistance early. The camera is a viewer, not a battering ram.

Push slowly and plan the way back

Mark roughly how much cable you feed in. On a fixed semi-rigid snake, a gentle pre-bend aims the tip before it disappears. An articulating tip is different: feed it straighter, then steer once the head is inside. That contrast is the point of articulating borescope vs straight. Never force past a hard stop. If the tip jams, ease back, twist gently, and try a slightly different angle. Kinks weaken a cheap sheath. Pull out steadily, and wipe the tip before you coil it. Standing water, rods, and sewage limits belong on the endoscope camera for drains page. On an engine, work only when it is cool and stationary. The spark-plug well and the thread are different sizes, and an IP label is not a heat rating. This set states no maximum probe temperature. Do not start the engine with the probe inserted.

Stop when the camera is the wrong tool

A clear clip is not proof that a cable is dead. The camera does not test voltage. Treat every conductor as live until a proper tester and a competent person say otherwise. The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 say the work should not involve entry if it can be done from outside. HSE L101 adds that remote viewing still has to match the safeguards of entry. Looking from a loft hatch is the point of the tool. Call a professional when the run is long or shared, when you smell fuel or sewer gas you cannot ventilate safely, or when a boiler, pressure vessel, or gas appliance is involved. A consumer borescope is not a pressure-equipment examination. Call a drainage firm when the blockage is beyond a short look or the camera may not come back. Length, diameter, and screen or phone belong on the inspection camera buying guide, not in the middle of a jammed cable.

Common questions

Do I bend the cable before I push it?
On a fixed semi-rigid snake, yes. A gentle pre-bend aims the tip before the cable enters. On an articulating camera, feed first and steer afterward. Do not crease the sheath into a sharp kink.
How do I get the probe back out?
Pull steadily with hands close to the opening. Ease off if you feel a catch, twist slightly, and try again. Do not yank. Wipe the tip before coiling so moisture is not trapped in the lens or sheath.
What do I do if the app will not install?
Stop. Use the retailer’s return route while you are still within your rights. Do not chase unofficial download sites from a loft ladder. A screen camera avoids that failure mode entirely.
Can I use it on a hot engine?
No. Wait until the engine is cool and stationary. This set does not publish a safe probe temperature. Never run the engine with the probe inside.
Can I use the picture to prove a cable is dead?
No. The camera shows position and damage clues. It does not measure voltage. Use proper electrical test equipment and a competent person before you touch conductors.
When do I stop and call someone?
When the space would require entry, when heat, fuel, or gas is involved, when the cable will not retrieve cleanly, or when the job is a long drain or a formal inspection. The camera’s job is a look from outside.
