Inspection camera buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a wall void to check, a cold engine to look into, or a short drain that will not clear, and the amazon.co.uk titles all shout 1080p or 1920p. An inspection camera buying guide should ignore that headline first. Match the furthest point you need to reach, the smallest hole the tip must pass, and whether you want a screen or a phone, then read the waterproof line. Pixel counts and star averages come after those checks. This page orders the decisions for the twelve cameras in the [endoscope camera comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/endoscope-camera). It does not name a single winner. The short list lives on [best inspection camera](/hub/measuring-equipment/endoscope-camera/sub/endoscope-camera-best). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the furthest point and the smallest hole

Cable length is the first filter, because a short articulating tip and a five-metre snake are different tools. In this set the phone cameras and the two small screen models, Qimic and Hopefox G45M, are about 5 m. The articulating Foxwell, Teslong, and Elitech units sit around 1–3 m. A longer reel, for a chamber further away, is not in this comparison. Probe diameter is next. Stated sizes are 5.5 mm on the Teslong TD300P, 6.2 mm on the Foxwell and the Elitech, 6.5 mm on the Teslong 3 m, 6.9 mm on the YEKO, and 7.9 mm on several phone snakes. Qimic, Hopefox G45M, and the Teslong at about £129.99 do not state a millimetre figure. For a spark-plug well, that figure is the whole buying decision.

Screen, phone, or a steered tip

The twelve listings fall into three types. Own-screen fixed cameras, Qimic at about £24.99 with a 2.4 inch panel and Hopefox G45M at about £26.99 with 4.3 inches, switch on without an app and push about 5 m. Phone USB cameras need a named app, and on Android they need OTG. The cheapest Hopefox at about £13.99 is Android 12 and above only, and iOS is not supported. Articulating screen cameras bend the tip in one plane and come with shorter cables. Choose a screen for gloves, outdoors, or a dirty bay. Choose a phone kit when you accept an app and want the lowest price for a five-metre look. Choose steering when the surface sits beside the entry hole. That contrast is on articulating borescope vs straight. Focus bands are only a few centimetres where a listing states them. Elitech’s screen line is 480×272, so a 1080p title and the panel you stare at are not the same claim.

Read the waterproof line twice

IP67, summarised against BS EN 60529, means dust-tight plus a short immersion test, often described as about 1 m for 30 minutes, not ten metres for an hour. Most probes here claim IP67. Keep the phone or the handset dry. Only the probe rating applies. The Teslong TD300P attribute says not water resistant, so treat it as a dry tool. The Teslong 3 m model shows water resistant in the attribute and IP67 in the highlight. PAPIBLU adds a seller sentence of 10 m for one hour on top of IP67. That is marketing, not the IP test. A 5 V USB camera sits under the voltage thresholds in the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 guide, and no box line here includes a BS 1363 plug. If the camera is not as described, section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 sets a short-term right to reject within 30 days when the other conditions are met.

What the price bands in this set actually buy

Shelf prices in this comparison fall into four bands. About £14–£22 buys a roughly 5 m phone snake: Hopefox Android-only, Ferdiiz, ENNOVOR PRO, PAPIBLU, and YEKO, with app risk and no built-in screen. About £25–£27 buys an own-screen fixed camera of about 5 m, Qimic or Hopefox G45M. Elitech at about £69.99 is a mid articulating screen of about 1 m, with a thin UK review sample. About £130–£150 buys Teslong and Foxwell, short cables and slim tips for engines and cavities, not garden gullies. A phone camera at about £17 can still be the wrong buy for an iPhone or a steered look at a valve. An articulating tip at about £150 can still be the wrong length for a drain. Pipe jobs sit on the endoscope camera for drains page.

Common questions

Is 5 m enough, or do I need a sewer reel?
About 5 m covers many gullies, sink wastes, and short runs toward a first chamber in UK home guidance aimed at handheld cameras. A longer underground run needs a drain reel, which is outside this set. An articulating camera at 1–1.6 m is the wrong length for that drain job even if the tip steers well.
Will an Android-only camera work on an iPhone?
No. The cheapest Hopefox in this set states Android 12 and above, and that iOS is not supported. Buy a screen model, or a phone kit that lists an iPhone adapter, if that is your handset.
Why do two Teslong lines disagree about water?
The TD300P attribute says not water resistant. The 3 m Teslong attribute says water resistant while the highlight also claims IP67. Read the attribute that matches the ASIN you are buying, not a sister model’s marketing.
Does a higher star rating on 21 reviews beat 4.5 from a thousand?
Not as evidence. A thin sample can sit at 4.9 while a large sample at 4.5 tells you more about repeated use. Always read the review count next to the stars, then check length and diameter for your job.
What can I do if the camera is not as described?
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, you may have a short-term right to reject within 30 days when the goods are not as described and the other conditions in that section apply. Claim against the retailer on the order. A one- or two-year warranty line is extra. It does not replace the Act.
