How to use a winch

Updated: 22 October 2026

The risky moment is paying line out with too few wraps left, standing over a steel cable, or leaving a 12 V motor running. How to use a winch, for the machines in our [winch comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/winch), is inspect, anchor, spool with wraps left, pull from the side, and stop when the job becomes a lift. This page does not rank the twelve listings. Peter F. read these amazon.co.uk listings in October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you pull

Look at the line before the pound figure. A cut strap, an open stitch, a kink, or a hook that will not close is a reason to stop. DASBET reviews describe stitching that failed on first use. On the FreeTec, one owner found the gears dry. A safety pawl stops the handle spinning back. The Einhell return lock is a different claim, and the base still twists if you under-bolt it. A Stealth free-spool clutch is not stated as a load brake. The anchor has to move last. BOOMSTART prints 1,130 kg and 270 kg (600 lb). Do not invent a capacity.

Spooling and the free-spool clutch

Webbing goes on flat. Steel goes on without kinks. Synthetic rope wants a smooth guide, not a roller cut for cable. That pairing is the winch buying guide. UK Winches describe rated pull with at least five wraps left, and about half the pull when half the rope is still on the drum. Keep the stricter count, and stop if you can see the fixing screw. Stealth states no rope length. Neilsen states 15 m of cable. FreeTec states 10 m of strap. Walk a 12 V hook out in free-spool, then engage drive before you press the switch.

During the pull

Move the load steadily. Do not stand in the line of a steel cable. If it breaks, it whips. Gloves and a damper are the usual protection. Agree a signal and keep people out of the line. Clear an Einhell tangle with the load off. If a 12 V case is too hot to hold, stop. A towbar lighting socket is not a supply. If the anchor battery feeds the winch, keep that engine running and check you are moving the load, not the anchor.

After the tension, and when you stop

Hold with the pawl or the return lock, then fit the real restraint if the load must travel. The winch retrieves. A bow chain holds the hull on the road. Do not knock a loaded pawl open. Stop when the load leaves the ground at work. LOLER covers that lifting. HSE treats ground-level winching as outside lifting equipment. Do not lift people. Stop for a high-current vehicle install or a kinked rope. A larger pound rating does not repair a bad anchor. Named picks, if you are replacing a damaged drum, are on best winch.

Common questions

How do I spool a strap or a cable so it holds?
Put webbing on flat, under light tension, so each layer sits inside the one below. Put steel on without kinks or crossed loops that will crush the layer underneath. Synthetic rope needs the smooth hawse, not the roller. Walk the line out on the free-spool clutch of a 12 V drum, then engage drive before you power the motor. If the listing never stated the length, as the Stealth pages do not, mark the last safe wraps yourself with no load on the hook.
How many wraps should stay on the drum?
Keep enough turns that the rope anchor is not the thing taking the load. UK Winches describe rated pull with at least five wraps left. A strap-fitting guide aimed at boat trailers talks about four. Use the higher number while the line is tight. If you can see the screw that pins the strap, you have gone too far, whatever the carton implied.
Why does the pull fall as line comes off the drum?
The rating is a first-layer idea: a full drum makes the lever longer and the pull smaller. UK Winches use half the rope still on the drum as a picture of about half the rated pull. A winch that feels strong with three layers wound on can stall when you are down to the last metre, which is what a 2026 Neilsen review describes inside the printed 2,000 lb. Plan the pull for the layer you will actually be on.
Can I leave a 12 V winch running until the load moves?
No. These motors are intermittent. Heat and a collapsing battery are the stop signs, and a lighting socket on the towbar is not a supply. Recovery winches make poor hoists because the duty cycle is short. If the setup needs the engine running, that is to feed the battery, not to win a stall. A winch that only crawls when you hold the switch for minutes is the wrong rating or a bad anchor.
Can I use a recovery winch to raise a load off the ground?
Not as a hoist. A recovery rating is a horizontal line pull. The Stealth pages state a free-spool clutch and do not state a load brake. The Einhell is the hand wire winch in this set with a return lock and a 500 kg bearing force, and even that page is not a LOLER certificate because the bullets say hoist. People are never the load.
When should I stop and call a professional?
Call a competent person for lifting at work, for a high-current install in a vehicle, for a structure you did not design, and for a line or a gearset that is already damaged. Stop when the release needs a kick, when the pawl will not hold, or when the only capacity on the page is two numbers that disagree. A public-road recovery with other traffic is the same boundary.
